They started their memorable year with the choice of Botch-Per- notto for the class photographer. The class colors, turquoise and white, paralled with the white Camellia, as their flower: were chosen with a conservative thought. The senior assembly, senior day, and banquet were highlights of the year. In conclusion, the senior gift was chosen and presented to the school with the same spirit that was characteristic of the class of 55. SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP TEAM On Ianuary 29, twenty-two well-qualified seniors trudged down to South High School to take the scholarship test. As per usual, they did a creditable job with Dick Erickson and Roy Yeager copping the seventh and eighth places respecively. The rest of the group did very well, and we have good reason to be proud of them. Seated tleit to rlqhtlz I. Hubly, S. Pelz. I. Meyer, M. Holloway, A. Metro. V. Gerlach. Standing: B. Backus, D. Under the able assistance of the advisors, Mrs. Findlay and Mr. Moore, editor Ianet Entzi and her staff published twelve suspense packed issues. Students and faculty alike looked forward to the numerous news and social articles of each edition which provided special interest and satisfaction to those whose names appeared in the articles and enjoyment to all readers. CRIER Your classes, your activities, and your sports-all these make up your book of the year, the CRIER. Amidst the cries of meet that deadline, check that copy, and where's the dummyf' witty writers tell the story, shutter-bugs snap pictures of it, able artists illustrate it, and exu- berant business managers supply the cash for it. All this is under the faithful guidance of Mrs. Russo, Mr. Massaro, and Mr. Allen. The most important element in editing a year book is team work and cooperation of the staff. This year's staff profited by that in their struggle to complete the book for senior day. Row I: S. Margel, A. Metro, S. Pool, C. Henerio, H. Antoncff, K. Iannucci, V. Gerlach, B. Wester. Row II: S. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council in its ninth year of continued service is an organization which works to obtain closer co-operation between the students and the faculty. It helps to promote law and order as well as maintaining the welfare and school spirit of the student body. Snowmen, reindeer, choir boys, Christ- mas trees, and Santa Claus enlivened the halls before Christmas as the Student Council joined in to help keep the spirit of Christmas alive for the young at heart. The council also sponsored a highly suc- cessful clean-up campaign tSeniors wonll, dances after the games, aided the under- privileged through contributions to the Boardman Ex-servicemen's Club, sched- uled assemblies, under-wrote the Under- classmen's assembly, helped to select cheerleading finalists, and finally launched another great Intra-mural track meet. '-1 ff, sdwli Y-TEENS Who is the clown? lt's impossible! Have you had your fortune told yet? These utterances and many others drifted from the cafeteria the night of the Hi-Y- Y-Teen get-acquainted party. Everyone got into the act that night! At Christmas time, the halls echoed the carols sung by Avida's choir and the gifts to the under-privileged gladdened the hearts of children and adults. Collega girls won't ever forget their stylish fashion show, splash- ing in the Y pool or their talent show. The Iudo pro- gram, the All-City recognition service and the dances, the annual Rose Ceremony, and, of course, the magnificent, never-to-be-forgotten Sweetheart Ball helped to create better fellowship among all Y-Teen girls and their community. 50 Row I: S. H i- Y The Boardman Hi-Y began a busy and properous year with their traditional managing of the football concessions and the selling of those familiar school pencils. Once again the Hi-Y aided the Y-Teens in presenting a success- ful get-acquainted party. The glorious crowning at the Hi-Y Prom was re-introduced into Boardman's School life. During the winter and spring, the two Hi-Y groups challenged each other to rugged basketball and baseball games. Other notable events were Civic Day, the Father- Son Banquet, and the sending of representatives to Colum- bus to conduct a model legislature. FRENCH CLUB Bon Iour Mes Amies : and another session of the newly organized French Club has begun. The organization is made up of Iunior and senior French students under the guidance of Mr. Fargeix. At bi-monthly meetings the members discuss future events in French of course. Besides increasing the vocabulary, the meetings are also highly in- teresting. The highlight of this past year was the French Soiree, the planning of which was assumed largely by the officers. The Soiree was presented in real French style just like in gay Paris. ART CLUB Talent! Fun! Cooperation! These are the three key words in the Art Club. This organization was started in 1953 by Mrs. Eileen Russo, the advisor. Its purpose is to encour- age worthwhile projects in the fine quality arts and to beautify Boardman High School. The group's social events of the year have been a Hallowe'en Party, a Swim- ming Pany, and the Annual Spring Art Show which em- phasized the many various professions that there are in the art field. 1 1 .. l t True art in art iorm. Mr. Istnick and Mr. Selby, in coaching the frosh, found some boys whom they think will help the varsity next year and in years to come. Weachter was elected captain of the team. Coach Selby felt that Faull, Stoner, and Gaskeen were defensive standouts while Faull, Pinhey, and Cooper stood out on offense. The Freshmen won their first two games, defeating Fitch 18 to 0 and Hubbard 12 to 6. They then proceeded to lose their next three to: Struthers 12 to 7, Campbell 13 to 7, and Girard 6 to 0. Then they ended their season as they defeated Niles 12 to 6. 'F im iff f Blood, Sweat, and Tears. Hold that line! 73 Mr. Selby. Mr. Sonoga, Mr. Friend Mr. Istnick. Mr. Luqibihl Come on Slev! VARSITY FOOTBALL The Boardman Spartan football team: under the guidance of head coach Friend, and assistants Sonoga, Lugibihl, Istnick, Matesy, and Selby, opened the season with what seemed to be a fairly good team. But they were hampered by pre-season injuries which kept several players out of action for the season. Don Bender was chosen by the coaching staff to captain the team. Benny did a fine job of leading the boys and keeping them in order on the playing field. The Spartans opened the season in an abreviated contest with South in the Preview. We showed fine form, but the best we could do was play to a scoreless tie. Boardman met Memorial, our chief rival, in the opening game of the regular season, but wound up on the short end of a 12 to 6 score. Bartoli scored our lone touchdown. Youngstown Woodrow Wilson then defeated the Spartans by a 7 to 0 score. Next on the schedule were the Niles Red Dragons, rated one of the best teams in the state. Niles won by a score of 26 to 7. Slevin scored our only points. Boardman next played host to Girard who won 26 to 0. The following week North invaded the Spartan Stadium. We were up for this game because it was our homecoming. We won by a score of 13 to 7. Slevin scored one touchdown, while Clingan scored the other on a pass from Cailor. Hubbard, our next opponent, won 13 to 7. Slevin scored our only points. We then went to Newton Falls and won that game 22 to 7 with Slevin scoring two touchdowns and Middle- ton scoring on an intercepted pass. We then faced Struthers, who having about the same record as we did, won 21 to 7. Slevin again scored our only points. Then came the last game of the season-Fitch. After working hard in preparation of the game, we lost 39 to 13. Lucente and McCabe scored for Boardman. The season record of two wins and seven losses wasn't too impressive but the team tried hard, and the school spirit was wonderful. 74 HOMECOMING Upper Lett Here comes the queen!! These people are the faithful ones who merged from many a game with very little voice left. Leading this enthusiasm was their faithful adviser, Mr. Ballinger. Not only did these students yell their heads of cheering the team, but they also worked them off decorating the goal posts or the school halls before the games. Besides giving vocal support every year, the Booster Club puts on clever stunts especially designed to build up school spirit. Members attend all the games, at home or away, to show how proud they are of their team. Hey! Hey! What d' you say? School Spirit-Decorating the halls before the game are Booster officers: S.
