When I came to Boardman School, you were in the fifth grade. I learned to know you quite well then: but as the years have passed, many of you have grown away from me. You are graduating 156 strong: yet out of the 156 seniors of 1953, only 102 were attending Boardman School in the fifth grade eight years ago. We hope sincerely that you will return to Boardman High School for requent visits because we enjoy having you, and we like to know what you are doing. The best wishes of the administration and faculty will follow you through the years to come. This year's juniors proudly flashed their long-awaited class rings. They showed much ingenuiiy in planning a very successful homecoming dance. They also sponsored two dances after basketball games to make money for that all-important event, the Prom. The officers for the year were Louis Levy, president, Iohn Mahan, vice president: Elaine LePoris, secretary: Ronald Patterson, treasurer: and Mimi Vierow, Student Council representative. ...T-.V . ...Y 4.1. , ff . , National Honor Society Iuniors: f Iudy DuPuy Carl Garver Betsy Gott Esther Krichbaum Louis Levy Donald Long Iohn Mahan Iane Middleton Anna Iean Schuler Betsy and Ginny dabble in paints while Iay receives color assistance rom Mrs. Russo. SENIOR EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE The management of the affairs of the Senior class is the devoted task of the executive committee, piloted by Ray Nies. As captain of the Senior ship of state, the committee chose Gatschene as the class photographer, picked the class announcements, and supervised the senior assembly which became one of the highlights of the year. The assignment of choosing class colors, motto, and flower was also designated to this organization, which made credit- able selections. The group spent much time planning our unique senior banquet and the activities for that much-anticipated Senior Day. Other big events arranged by them were the preparations for an after-the-prom program, and for a '53 class gift. SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP TEAM Boardman's Scholarship Team swept the Mahoning County honors in l953. In the state-wide examinations on Ianuary 31st at South High School, Board- man's senior winners were Richard Baird, first: David Gluck, second: IoAnn Rogers, fourth: Ronald Alexander and Paul Bauschatz, tied for sixth: David Yeager, eighth: and David Hubly, ninth. In addition, Boardman took thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth places and placed every member of its twenty-man team on the honorable mention list. Such an overwhelming victory is a tribute to the fine teaching and high scholastic standards of Boardman. Arsenic and Old Lace This hilarious comedy is based on the antics of two elderly spinsters, Abby and Martha Brewster fArden Champion and Peggy Brownt, who have a plan all their own for thoughtfully, but illegally, exterminating lonely ald gentlemen with nips of elderberry wine mixed with arsenic. Their nephew Teddy CWarren Burrl, believing he is Teddy Roosevelt, buries the yellow fever victims in various Panama Canals in the cellar. The only sane member of the family is Mortimer tNorrnan Rubinfeldt, another nephew, a young drama critic interested in Elaine Harper CMary Lou Morrisl. Elaine's father, Reverend Harper CDean Limbertl. can't quite appreciate Mortimer's profession. Compli- cations arise when Mort discovers the latest victim in the window seat. Ionathan iDave Fitchetl, another nephew with a sinister past, and a friend, Dr. Einstein 1fRay Niesl, move in, along with the body of one of Ionathan's victims. There is great confusion when Ionathan and Teddy seek burial for the two corpses in the cellar. Officers Brophy fBob Leedyl and Klein tDon Iohnsont recognize Ionathan and his partner as fugitives. Lieutenant Rooney tFtonald Alexanderl, scoffinq at the confession as to the numerous bodies in the cellar, marches his prisoners off to jail. As the curtain closes, the kindly ladies offer their wine to an unsuspecting victim, Mr. Witherspoon flohn Morganl. Thanks to the cast and Mr. Dykins for a spendid performance. The '53 Crier was hailed by the student body as a well-planned annual which would preserve the best memories of high school. Row I: H. Platt, D. Goudsmit, V. Manchester, I. A. Rogers lEditori, C. For the first time, members of any class in high school could offer suggestions and contributions to the newspaper. Other innovations made by Editor Shirlee McKenrick and her staff were a larger newspaper page, a Senior Spotlight feature, and letters to the editors. With the aid of Miss Amstutz and Mr. Moore and an ingenious, hard-working staff, the editors presented truly a representative Bugle this year. Row l: B. Schomer, M. Potts, L. Dunn, S. The dividends of these enterprises are returned to the stockholders at the end of the year. With the aid of its chief overseer, Mr. Gulgin, the Industrial Arts Club of 1953 had an enjoyable and profitable year. GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION lump ball! Out of bounds! Fou1! Another exciting G.A.A. tournament is in session. During the year this lively organization schedules games in speedball, basketball, volleyball, and softball. Among the musts for all G.A.A. members are the fall picnic at Boardman Park, a Ianuary swimming party at the Y.M.C.A., and the all-important awards presentation at the end of the season. CADET TEACHERS If there's a younger brother or sister in your home, you've heard ot Cadet Teachers. It not, let us explain that they are high-school boys and girls who spend forty-five minutes daily with the younger generation. Among other unscheduled activities, they organize games such as dodge ball, relays, and cat and mouse. They are greatly appreciated not only by the elementary school children, but also by the teachers, for their assistance enables the deserving teachers to enjoy a free period. The Cadet Teachers really enjoy their daily bout as teachers and comforters. MONITORS Stationed in the halls of Boardman are members of one of the most important service groups in school: the Monitors. These students are entrusted with keeping the halls clean, directing traffic on the stairs, and escorting school visitors. As captain, Dick Kadis supervises the groups and, with the aid of Mr. Bohn, helps conduct a well-organized monitor system. Byrns. I. Harmon, P. Eichenberger, S. Gas- keen, B. Shodd. I. A. Rogers, P. BAND Every eighth period the top-tapping music of the band drifted through the halls of Boardman. This spirited group performed at all football games and presented a special show for the Football Preview at the South High Stadium. The Band also appeared at the Canfield Fair and the Niles Invitational Band Festival, where it received enthusiastic praise from the audience. The West Side Merchants' Halloween Contest proved financially successful, for the Boardman Band won the first prize of SlOO. The big event of l953 was the annual Spring Concert in April, in which everything from Brahms to bebop was featured. The Boardman Band has its own camp on Lake Erie, where for one week before school the members practice marching and playing for the coming season, Such a full schedule of events could not have been carried out without the lively direction of Mr. Bame, the cooperation of every member, and the leadership of officers David Yeager, captain, and Lois Duvall and Dick Harmon, lieutenants. 871 gh 2' r? . Todarello MAJORETTES As the whistle blows ending the first half of the football game, a cheer goes up from the spectators as the snappy majorettes lead the band down the field. Something new and rather dangerous was added this year by head majorette Audrey Clark, who thrilled the crowd with her fire-baton twirling. These majorettes spent long hours of practice perfecting their routines, and they really deserve credit for their spirit. SENIOR PEP BAND You name ity we'll play it! That's the motto of the Senior Pep Band. The Pep Band is a group newly organized this year to help stimulate school spirit. It has been a tradition at Boardman that conditioning the mind and training the body are both important to character building. Therefore, the athletic program is an extensive one, aimed at giving our students a sense of fair play and good sportsmanship. Boardman offers a variety of sports, including football, basketball, baseball, track, tennis, riflery, and golf. The importance of these activities cannot be overlooked. Their influence instills a pride in the student body and the community as a whole. But even more important is their effect upon the individual player. Perhaps the key which Boardman offers opens the door to the sports world. If so, it is necessary that the student be given a chance to explore the realm of athletics while he is in high school. If he is not suited for such a career, he will still enjoy the benefits of wholesome sports. lf, after participating in one of the various sports, the student discovers a sincere desire to continue in the field, then Boardman has succeeded in sending to the world another well-adjusted citizen. Throughout 1953 we grew in personality as well as in scholarship by participating in many extracurricular activities. The Homecoming Dance, the Sweetheart Ball, the Hi-Y Prom, and the all- important Iunior-Senior Prom furnished dancing entertainment for the most avid enthusiasts. Boardman's assembly schedule was crowded to overflowing this year. The Student Council brought six paid assemblies featuring professional entertainers: in addition, numerous student productions were presented by the vocal, instrumental, and dramatics departments. Highlighting the student ventures was the novel Senior Assembly which revealed much talent in the graduating class. Along with these special memories we must take note of the every-day events at Boardman, for these ordinary happenings are just as vital a part of our school life as the larger activities. Open the School Life door! You will find there glimpses of the atmosphere which makes Boardman an exciting school to attend. y .
