B To you, dear Seniors and underclassmen, we, the Annual Staff of Nineteen Hundred and Forty, present this book, and with it, our sincere hope that it will please you. The time we spent, along with the unavoid- able trials and tribulations, is now past, and in their place we have created a sort of collective diary to portray a cross section of our last year at Boardman. For the summary of the highligh'ts in our activities throughout the year, praise goes to Peg Miller, Jean Beard, Jane Meub, and Georgiana Baker. Jack Fieldhouse produced his masterpiece in the form of the Sen- ior Class history. Through the untiring efforts of James Malony, Stan Loman, and Floyd Caldwell, we relive the sports season from football through to track. Crescent Balmenti, Ruth Hudson, and Bob Hunter are responsible for the informal pictures of the teachers and also for interest- ing snapshots. Recording the daily events about school was the job of Gayle Patterson, Peg Fisher, Ladonna Lesher, and Warren Luce. In char- acterizing each senior, Dave Bixler and Virginia Spievak spent many busy hours. The characteristic traits of each teacher was picked out by Jean Beard and Jack Fieldhouse. To sketch and fill in here and there, Marianne Elton and Ray Hammar put on smocks and turned artist. Finally the Annual was written into typed form by Phyllis Clever, Jane Parry, and Jane Larson. Many thanks are also due to Miss Hamilton and Mr. Tidd our ad- visors, who with their cooperation and suggestions, helped to make this a better book. Sandwiched in between the work, the staff managed to enjoy a party with the Bugle staff and to plan a celebration after the Annual went to press. So, kind friends, we have labored diligently to produce a yearbook whose memories will carry you back to these happy days and one which will be a possession to prize. ANNUAL STAFF BUGLE Those articles must be in tonight, or we won't be able to put the Bugle out this week at all! Now, I'rn not blaming you, but ............................... Thus spoke our capable, but very excitable editor, Crescent Balmenti, at least several times a fortnight. Nonetheless, the Bugle came out every time without fail, and one of its highest claims to honor is the new time record! No ten o'clock conclaves to slap the pages together-five thirty was the latest. Aside from this achievement, we are justly proud fpardon our con- ceitj of the material. Cressy , with the help of his assistant editor, Vir- ginia Spievak, sent some very inspiring editorials to press, not to mention some brilliant extras for the first page. The Society page under Gayle Patterson and Peg Fisher didn't neg- lect a single club or activity and Jane Meub's Feature staff faithfully re- corded the funny sayings of the students fand facultyl. The doings of the athletic teams were written up by Jimmy Malony and Stan Loman. This year the Bugle found it necessary to institute a new department, the News staff. This staff under Peg Miller, managed to keep the extra pages filled with news, important and otherwise. The business manager was Bob Hunter and the production manager, Floyd Caldwell. The circulation was increased this year from four hun- dred fifty copies to five hundred ten. As for social activities, Inky pen, together with the Annual staff, held a party here at school, and there's a rumor Cand a true one at thatl that we had a swell time. All in all, both the staff and the subscribers were well pleased, and no small part of credit is due to Mr. Bohn and Mr. Ballinger, our advisors. FIRST ROW: -M. Fisher, G. Patterson. J. Meub, M. C L - - , v v STAGECRAFT The results of the election are as follows: President, James Millman, vice-president, Crescent Balmentig secretary, Rita Vaschakg treasurer, Jane Parry. With this announcement the first meeting of the Stagecraft Club of 1939-40 was ended. The second event of importance was the choosing of new members. After nerve-racking try-outs, nine students were notified that they had been selected by Mr. Bohn, the advisor, as best worthy to uphold the high standards of Stagecraft. They were admitted barely in time for the Hal- lowe'en party. VVhen Mr. Bohn vetoed plans for going HALLOWEEN- ING, as a club, the members immediately went to the other extreme and de- clared they wouldn't even come in masquerade. Nevertheless, the new- comers were heartily welcomed. At Christmas, Stagecraft Club presented a play for chapel. It lived up to its title, A Mad Breakfast, and was much enjoyed. The Stageset Benefit was, as always, the club's big event of the year. Many hours of hard work went into its preparations and it wasn't just luck which made the entertainment bring down the house. Jack Fieldhouse supplied a one-act play entitled Dangerous Dan McGrew. The plot was exactly what the name implies, for the scene was laid in a bar-room! Another short play, Elmer was added to the program, together with several short skits and, of course a song by Mr. Bohn. Programs at the meetings were both educational and entertaining. A favorite type was one in which several different members read over the same short scene from a play. The audience, consisting of the rest of the club criticized and discussed the various interpretations. As everyone took part in these, during the year, all received some benefits from them. A spring party ended the year, a year which all Stagecraft members voted highly successful in every way. FIRST ROVV:-- B. Oestmann, J. Beard, P. J. Clever, J. Parry, J. Millman, C. Bahnenti, R. And thus started the year of 1939-40 for the Avi- da Girl Reserves. However, the big argument ended happily after all for they had not only a theatre party but two dances, Corn Shock Shuf- fle and the Sweetheart Swing. During the year the G. R. Collaborated with the Hi-Y to institute a type of dance new to Boardman, the biweekly dance on Friday nights after school. These dances proved very successful in promoting friendship among the students. Alternate meetings of the G. R. were lengthened to 5 o'clock so that the program chairman might invite speakers without having to limit their time. Well-planned programs that consisted of everything from question bees to a speaker on hair styles were presented throuhout the year. One of the guest speakers most enjoyed by the girls was a buyer from Living- stons, who accompanied by a model, spoke on Spring Fashions. In January the club took a trip to the Butler Art Gallery where the girls learned many new things about pictures from Miss Evans, the art teacher from Youngstown College. But aside from the social side of G. R., there is a service side too. At Thanksgiving they filled baskets for unfortunate families and at Christmas, dressed dolls for poor children. The Avida girls also joined the city-wide clubs in presenting the an- nual May Prom and the Youth Conference, the latter in cooperation with the Hi-Y. AVIDA G R COLLEGA G. R. S-s-s-s-s bang! Collega has again scored another bull's eye! Under the successful guidance of Mary Lou Stewart as President, and Mary Jane Oestmann as Program Chairman, Collega Girl Reserves have rounded out another successful year. The calendar this year was full of exciting activities. A big Get Ac- quainted party was held in October, when everyone danced, sang and ate Cmostly atell. Probably the most impressive ceremony of the year was the Recognition Service which was performed entirely by candle light, each girl lighted her small candle from a large one held by the President, and formed a large triangle within a circle. A prayer was offered, and each girl solemnly pledged herself to her club for the coming year. The Service Committee filled baskets for the poor on Thanksgiving and dressed dolls at Christmas, and combined with the Avida Girl Reserves to buy mirrors for the girls' rest-rooms. Mrs. John L. Marsh was one of the leading speakers of the year. She spoke on The Relationship of the Girl Reserves to the Y. W. C. A. Miss Ewing, leader of the Girl Reserve Clubs of Youngstown, also spoke words of encouragement to the girls at several different meetings. Novel programs, such as an Amateur Hour, Or chestra Leader, and General Information Quizzes, and talks by teach ers, made the year very interesting The climax of the year was probably the All City May Prom, held at ldora Park on May 3rd. Colonel Manny Prager provided the excellent music, and students turned out full force. It was really the most gala event of the year and enjoyed by everyone. All activities were concluded with a big picnic in Mill Creek Park. CHot dogs and pop being the domi- nating featuresl. COLLEGA G R BAN D Rat, tat, tat, -Rat, tat, tat- What's this coming down the field? It can't be the Boardman Band-it is too large, and look!-They have seven twirlers. My, they certainly can step. A conversation such as this might have been overheard any Saturday afternoon of a home football game. To relieve you of any undue suspense -the object of this just praise was the Boardman High School Band-the largest in the annals of Boardman Band History. This year the band took the field at all home games and at Colum- biana fifty strong-six abreast-eight deep, all under the capable leader- ship of Isabelle Beatty. The band inaugurated a policy of five days of practice each week this year, a deviation from the former two days a week. This extra practice noticeably improved its performance-both on the field and in the stand. After much intensive drill, the band sallied forth to the county Festi- val at Fitch and came back with banners flying. They also participated in the local Spring Festival. Throughout the year, the band tried something new, as it delved into the classical field of music. It played many class A and B numbers includ- ing several symphony favorites. Among these were Tannhauser, Lohen- grin and Robin Hood . To bring to a close their most successful year, the band led the annual Decoration Day Parade composed of VVar Veterans, Scouts and others who wended their way from the school to the cemetery to pay due respect to those who sacrificed their lives in the great VVorld VVar. f'I..XIlINETS: I.. Work- ing with one of the finest groups he has ever had, Mr. Minteer has com- pleted a very successful year. Many novel ideas were used this year. The first semester was de- voted largely to Music Appreciation Cand not VValter Damrosch's Three Little Fishies eitherb. Such songs as Handel's Largo the Barcarolle from Tales of Hoffman, Intermezzo, Paderewski's Minuet in G and Wagner's Tannhauser and Lohengrin were played on records until students were able to recognize them. A series of tests then followed. By the third test everyone was expected to be able to pass. Grades for that period were based on this examination. The second semester followed the usual routine. Mr. Minteer special- ized in male and mixed quartets this year. The best of these groups per- formed at the annual Stageset Benefit, and also at the Spring Music Festival. A quintet composed of Betty Findlay, soprano, Betsy Powers, alto: Tom Creps, bassg Lewis Anderson, tenor and Jim Millman, bass, showed the result of their training at this Musicale. Remember the time you had to get that Math. done, and the trouble you had keeping Mr. Minteer from seeing the book? Remember also the colds suddenly contracted when you discovered the period was to be spent singing solos? Oh well, it was all fun anyway. Preparation for next year's chorus, which is to be more exclusive, was begun. They tell us that to be eligible, a student must have a reasonably good voice and be interested in theory, music appreciation and sight read- ing work. Well, dear Seniors, now that you look back on Chorus-all those hard tests, all the public performances, and mainly all the fun, don't you hate to leave it? We wonder if maybe Chorus isn't one of the most enjoyable things Seniors have to remember. Here's hoping we all go right on singing all through life! ! I! This year, a new teacher of music, Miss Lowenne Swindler came to Boardman as assistant to Mr. Minteer. Due to the fact that the newcomer had charge of the lower grade music classes, Mr. Minteer was able to de- vote a major part of his time to the one hundred sixty-five members of the high school chorus. Miss Swindler also was a valuable addition to the staff for, being a talented violinist herself, she improved the string section greatly. CHORUS 5... HI Y CLUB VVanta buy a pencil? With this question the Hi-Y club started the school year. Thirty-two boys interested in the ideals of Hi-Y joined together, To create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community, high standards of Christian Character. The social committee, led by Jim Malony, opened the year's activities with a novel Weight Dance on Sept. 23. This was followed by a series of picnics, swimming parties, and dances topped off by the annual Spring Prom on April 20, with Tee Ross furnishing the music. Dave Wiggins and his program committee planned for each meeting varied and interesting entertainment. The most outstanding of these were Dike Beede's talk on football, a trip through W.F.M.J. radio station, a talk by State Senator Griffith, movie by Bell Telephone and a style show presented by a representative of Strouss-Hirshberg Co. At several meet- ings the club engaged in vigorous discussions of topics presented by the com- mittee. On December 1, 2, 3, the State Conference was held at Youngstown with some 1,200 delegates. For this meeting many outsanding speakers were brought in, the most noted being Dr. Slutz. In athletics the boys showed up quite well with football, basketball, and baseball teams in the field. They also enjoyed swimming in the Y pool at every opportunity. On April 6, the Hi-Y, Torch and G. R. Clubs all over the city combined to hold the Annual Youth Conference. The keen enthusiasm and fine spirit of the boys, together with the ex- cellent advice of Mr. Hershberger made possible a very successful year. The officers for the year were: Bill Fell, president, Jim Malony, vice- presidentg Bill Waite, secretary, and Jim Millman, treasurer. FIRST ROVV: Mr. Hirshhergm', Advisor: VV. Robertson. J. The Torch Club had one of its most successful years under the rule of George Pugh, presidentg George Wright, vice-presidentg Lloyd Johnson, secretaryg Bob Wiltsie, treasurerg and the excellent advice of Mr. Robin- ette, who served his second year as advisor. In the early fall, the Torch Club sold ice cream and candy to the spec- tators of our home football games and as the weather got colder, the ice cream was changed to hot dogs, for which everyone was thankful. The pro- ceeds from these sales financed the year's program. At the first meeting the new members were taken in and the club got under way. The program committee had an interesting schedule planned, which included a trip through the local radio stations, several speakers, and many swims at the Y pool. Several extra meetings were held, also, such as joint stage parties with other clubs and a joint meeting with Hi-Y and A. Z. A. on February 22. The social committee started off with a roller skating party, which was closely followed by a theater party and later, a scavanger hunt. The sea- son was topped off by the All-City Hi-Y Torch dances in December and June. On April 5 the Torch Club combined with the Hi-Y and Girl Reserves to hold the Annual Youth Conference. The club was exceptionally outstanding in athletics this year due to the fine coaching of Mr. Robinette and the hard Work of the boys. In basketball they placed top in the league and also won honors in baseball. The club ended the year with a picnic and at the final meeting the offi- cers for next year were elected. TORCH CLUB LIBRARY If you wandered into the library during any hour of the day, you would find the library staff busily coping with numerous problems which arise during a period. To become a member of the staff is a position desired by many girls. This year the response was so great that only Juniors and Seniors were permitted to serve. Under the able guidance of Miss Hamil- ton the chosen few were initiated into the secret workings of a library and in a short time all had become old hands, thoroughly accustomed to any situa- tion. For each period a staff of three was appointed. To distinguish her duties, each girl was given a numberg 1, 2, or 3. Number one sat behind the desk checking books in and out, alloting jobs to the other girls, and, as the girl in charge, kept peace and order among the students. Behind the rail near the books, number two was employed. At the end of a few weeks she had cultivated a knowledge of the books and was soon able to help un- certain students in their selections of reading material. At any place in the library you might find number three busily engaged. As errand girl she might be delivering due slips, cleaning out the magazine rack, or even mending books. Of course, each girl had to serve her time in every posi- tion thereby gaining a thorough knowledge of the library. The staff joined a book of the month club and received many of the newest books, which were circulated among the girls. A few of these books were Disputed Passage by Douglas, Miss Susie Slagle's by Au- gusta Tucker, No More Gas by Nordhof and Hall, and This Is My Story by Eleanor Roosevelt. From September until January the W. P. A. mended the torn and badly worn books. At the end of that time the library shelves were filled with bright colored book backs and with the aid of a few potted plants the room became bright and cheerful as you might see it now. Jim played safety man on defense and turned in some fine performances carrying back opponent's punts. His flaming team spirit will be sorely missed next season. ALLEN MILLER was given honorable mention on the Tri-County All Star team this year as a halfbaek, He was the speed merchant in this year's squad and made most of his gains on end runs. Junior was one of the best blockers in the backlield and often led the interference for the ball carriers. He was a smashing tackler and a tower of strength on both defense and offense. DAVID BIXLER is a three year varsity man. Although one of the smallest ends in Tri-County, he was one of the best. He was a very hard worker and no opponent was able to consistently gain ground around his end. Dave did best when the going was toughest. XVALTER ROBERTSON will long be remembered for his stellar play as a defensive tackler. The fact that Wally was twice chosen all Tri-County tackle speaks for itself. As captain this year, VValter's inspired play served as a line example for his teammates. His graduation leaves a gap that will be hard to fill. QF? as 1 f Q V J 3 ' 17.r-' ri. I . 5, T' .aiu U ROBERT HARRIGER was considered one of the best kickers in the Tri- County league. His timely punts often pulled the Spartans out of a hole. Hank was also one of the best passers on the team and when it came to carrying the pigskin, he could be counted upon to do his share. He also possessed an uncanny ability of knocking down and intercepting passes. GEORGE VAN VOLKENBURG was another fellow who due to in- juries and inexperience was forced to remain on the sidelines most of the season. When the chance came however, George could always be depended upon to come through with his best and to uphold that Spartan spirit. He was a fine tackler and blocker and could kill many a play in his territory. TONY BILLET was the smallest man in the backiield but one of the hardest to stop. Diminutive but dynamic -- those words fit him. T, B. played halfback this year and was one of the trickiest ball carriers the team had. Being one of the best tacklers on the squad, he always played havoc with any plays coming in his general direction. CHARLES MEEKER was a member of the varsity for three years. This year he was Spartan's biggest offensive threat. Chuck was a fine line plunger and his punting often got Boardman out of a tough hole. He showed remarkable ability for sizing up the opposing team. GRADUATING SENIORS GRADUATING SENIOR Stanley Loman was the captain and lone Senior on this year's basketball squad. Al- though injuries kept him on the bench for sev- eral games when playing, he managed to ill either the position of forward or center, and made good in both capacities. Stan is best re- membered for his timely foul shooting and for his performance under the basket. Q9 'IFN FIRST RONV K D X M y M V y R W SFCOND ROV! H F R A H I. , W I , go. ' ?G' '.
