And yet all this is not completely grim. There is humor, always intentional, and gentle endearing touches that soften the impact. This year's cast was all new with the exception of the narrator, Van Hardesty. Directed by Christine Purves and student director Mary .lo Diller, the cast had the opportunity to meet the narrator of the first performance, Albert Bigelow. C. bounced right back with a TD, with Joe Urich at the helm. TD's by Bill Lape and Ralph Reichenbach sparked play in the sec- ond quarter. The football changed hands many times in the second half but the Beav- ers outscored Defiance 'I4-6 with Lape and Buddy Taylor hitting paydirt. BLUFFTON STUNS ASHLAND ll-13 After polishing off Defiance, the Beavers migrated to Ashland where they ran up against a real tough ball club. The game was a tightly fought battle right down to the wire with Bill Lape's 2-point conversion being the deciding factor. Ashland scored first in the second quarter, making the score 7-0. B. C. came right back with Lape racing around end for a TD, The attempt at the conversion failed. The score was still 7-6 in the third quarter when Lape again raced around end, good for 68 yards for his sec- ond TD of the evening. The speedy halfback then rounded out the scoring by plunging into the end-zone for the 2-point conver- sion. Final score: Bluffton 14, Ashland 13. Before a iam packed homecoming crowd, the Beavers went clown to defeat at the hands of O.N.U. The Polar Bears led off with two quick T.D.'s early in the first quarter. B.C. fought back but to no avail. Time after time the Mastmen would drive deep into O.N.U. territory only to lose the ball on fumbles. After trailing the Bears 15-0 in the second quarter, the Beavers picked up their first score when lumbering fullback John Weber barreled through the Northern defense to hit T.D. country. The Beavers' second and last T.D. came on a Urich to Clemens pass play after B.C. had re- covered a fumble on their own 44. This time the conversion was good but Northern wound up taking the ball game 'l5-13. CELEBRATION In honor of the Beavers, T960 tri-champs of the M.O.L., the student council sponsored the M.O.L. cele- bration held in November, 1960. The purpose of this celebration was that tribute and honor be bestowed upon the T960 Bluffton College Beavers, MOL Con- ference Tri-Champs, and their winning coach, Ken Mast. Speaking for the student council was its president, Ted Berkey, whose choice words expressed praise and gratitude for a job well done. Members of the football team, you as representa- tives of Bluffton College have displayed a keen win- ning spirit, an enviable record, and the admiration of many. We are proud of you. We honor you in adding a fifth consecutive cham- pionship to Bluffton College football history. You are champions, champions that have repeated. The Bluffton College Beavers, once again plagued with the lack of experience, ineligibilities, and a few bad breaks, gave a performance far under their ex- pectations. Carl Liechty, the lone senior, along with Iettermen Paul Fike and Wayne Dickason, gave the usually fine performance, but could not quite control the fire set under them by teams such as Defiance, O.N.U., and Ashland. Once more we look into a bright future as we will have five lettermen on hand for the 1961-62 season, along with several other good upperclassmen. The league definitely is getting better, but we should show very convincingly if the prophecy is correct. RQ? 3 F Q 3 'l ' . -mf 'V '.W4xiL-u i FS A . C. had four in double figures. Bluffton gave very commendable performances at Wooster where they led most of the way before bow- ing, which was also the case against the rival Menno- nites at Goshen. Senior Carl Liechty finished a fabulous season as he led all scorers with 418, good for a 19.9 average. His services will be greatly missed in the 1961-62 cam- poign. Liechty lets go with iumper.
