The Band, which performed half-time shows at football games, hosted the annual Street Fair marching contest as well as the Bellmont-Bluffton-South Adams Music Festival. The Bluffton musicians presented the tra¬ ditional Winter and Spring Concerts and provided instrumental entertainment for both class plays and basketball games. After placing second in De¬ catur ' s Callithumpian parade, the Tigers traveled to Elkhart to participate in the state ensemble con¬ test. The Stage Band added extra flavor to the music sphere at BHS. The twenty-member jazz ensem¬ ble, led by Jack Edington, appeared on two oc¬ casions—the reception after the Winter Concert and the celebration following the Sectional victory. 18 The BHS Concert Choir, under the baton of Mr. Stan Roth, had one of its most active sea¬ sons during the 1969-70 school year. The Choir opened with a Thanksgiving service program and a Christmas appearance on area television. Following the annual Bellmont-Bluffton-South Adams Music Festival, the Choir journeyed to Concord, Indiana, to participate in the state choir contest. The popular Spring Concert cul¬ minated the Choir ' s calendar. The Swing Choir once again serenaded the community with its contemporary selections. The group of pop singers performed at the an¬ nual College Night, the Teachers ' Banquet, and the County Fish Fry. They also presented a Christmas program for the Rotary Club, a half¬ time show for a home basketball game, and a popular segment of choral music at the Spring Concert. Concert and Swing Choirs 20 Storm Up a Sing Choral accompanists were Jane Rivar, Larry Sheets, and Doug Gerber Altos Karen and Trudi prepare for future concert. 21 Stage Band and Swing Choir Add Class to BHS 22 Dabblers Strive for Artistic Perfection Under the supervision of its new sponsor, Mrs. Robert Sorrels, the Dabblers Club participated in several local and national contests, including the Wells County Fine Arts Festival, the Tri Kappa Art Show, and the Scholastic Art Contest. Along with President Jan Wimmer, Vice Presi¬ dent David Phillips, Secretary Cheryl Biberstine, and Treasurer Melba FHahn, the Dabblers raised funds to help finance their annual trip to Chicago. Once again Art Club members served as judges in the Christmas door decorating con¬ test. Mrs. Sorrels evaluates Bob ' s work. Senors and Senoritas Shout “Ole Spanish Club officers and sponsors are Kathy Kaade, Kathy Sills, Vicki Grandlinard, Nancy Dold, Mr. Kelty, and Mr. Shalley. Meeting once a month, the Don Quixotes endeavored to familiarize themselves with Spanish cultures and customs. Mr. Shalley supervised the club ' s many activities throughout the year. At the annual Spanish Club Banquet, held in April, the members enjoyed Mexican food. Also highlighting the activities was a trip to Taylor University to view the widely ac¬ claimed drama Don Quixote. Various aspects of Roman life were presented through means of a film on archeol¬ ogy, a discussion of Latin in the Catholic Church by Monsignor James Conroy, mythology con¬ tests, and a session on Latin music. Social events on the club ' s calendar included the autumn initiation, the Saturnalia festival in December, and the annual spring banquet. Latin Club sponsor was Mrs. Bodkin; officers were J. Meyer, pres.; M. Phillips, vice pres.; M. Baumgartner, sec.; C. Nowak, treas. The halls of Bluffton High School began to bloom when the Y-Teens opened the year with a flower-making project. The annual Best Beau banquet, held in Oc¬ tober, was also the initiation of new members. The Y-Teens also hosted the area-wide Mid- Winter Conference, held for the first time in Bluffton. Along with bringing the Christmas spirit to a needy family, the group donated a sum of money to a children ' s hospital in Haiti. Ending a successful year, President Jan Jack- son, Vice President Cindy Hauk, Secretary Sally Jackson, and Treasurer Cheryl Shaffter con¬ ducted the ceremonies at the Mother-Daughter Tea in May. During the fiscal year, new Hi-Y members were initiated, followed by the Christ¬ mastime caroling with the Y-Teens at local nursing homes, the Best Girl banquet, and the Father and Son dinner. Besides operating the concession stand during home basketball games, the club also donated a piano and a large sum of money to the BHS Music Depart¬ ment. The meetings, centering on the theme Re¬ sponsibility to Others, featured Bluffton ' s mayor and police chief, as well as two promi¬ nent ministers. Thespians Provide Dramatics for BHS The 1969-70 International Thespian Society, named last year, tried out its newly acquired title by branching out and taking on more responsibility. The pep session skits and the Easter and Christmas plays were highlights of the year. The formal initiation of new members was conducted by offi¬ cers Tom Gerber, president; Lela Ringger, vice- president; Jan Jackson, secretary; Bill Gitlin, treasurer; and Kathy Kaade, scribe; Mr. Schlagen- hauf, sponsor. mi r nil] 1 @ Librarians Serve Student Body and Staff While gaining practical experience in the field of library science, the student librarians proved to be a helpful element at Bluffton High School. Along with aiding the students in finding research materials for various term papers, the fifteen as¬ sistant librarians helped Mrs. Christian prepare a number of new books for circulation. The girls also learned correct card catalog usage, book mending techniques, and the shelving of books in proper order. Beth arranges books in proper form. Mrs. Christian teaches Susan how to file. sssm Ijgij t « i A i • A M--- mm mm N 1 H Office Help Renders Valuable Services Mrs. Watters and Mrs. Farling manage the second-floor office. To make efficient managing of a high school somewhat easier, BHS has the assistance of two secretaries: Mrs. Gerber, Principal Park ' s secre¬ tary, and Mrs. Watters, secretary for the two assistant principals, Mr. Edington and Mr. Modlin. In addition to the regular secretaries, Mrs. Farling manages the high school lunch proceeds and records. Several student office girls also aid in the busy main office. The main office is expertly run by Mrs. Gerber. Special Help Keeps BHS in Shape Though seldom recognized during the active school year, the cooks and custodians must be given credit for keeping the school in running order, despite varied schedules and numerous duties. Ben Kizer and Rodney Meyer are trained to serve teachers by operating the visu al aid equipment. From behind the stage, the public address boys— Brian Anderson, Bill Edris, and Rick Yergler—work to keep both school and community programs running smoothly. 33 FHA Is the Key to Success The Bluffton chapter of the Future Homemakers of America, organized only last year, is under the sponsorship of Mrs. Nash, home economics in¬ structor. The girls in the club learn the tech¬ niques, concepts, and value of creating well- ordered homes. The officers of the Future Homemakers of America are Kay Steffen, secretary; Darlene Neuenschwander, vice-president; Vicki Oswalt, treasurer; Ann Powell, president. 34 GAA Volleys and Punts Through Another Year Action was the key word for the 1969-70 Girls ' Athletic Association. Though most of the sports offered at BHS are geared for boys, GAA gives girls a chance to excel in athletic events. During the year, the members participated in competitive basketball and volleyball. Bowling, gymnastics, and softball proved to be popular among the Bengalettes. Coached and sponsored by Miss Naser, the GAA year proved to be strenuous, yet reward¬ ing. We Got Soul— Now You Get Some This is Tiger country roared in the gym as the cheerblock poured on school spirit again this year. Spelling, tiger buttons, campaign hats, harmonized yells, stamping feet, and enthusiasm added to a colorful sectional tourney and bas¬ ketball season. The cheerleaders devoted many hours of hard work in teaching the girls interesting new chants to prod the Bengals to victory. Through their endeavors—color, action, and enthusiasm were added to the success of the 1970 basketball season. Cindy Hauk, Ann Hamilton, Cindy Willey, Cheryl Schaffter— varsity. L - Intramural Dribblers Prove Hardwood Talents Hoosier hysteria once again gripped BHS this year as intramural basketball brought out sixty- nine future All-American candidates to unleash their multiple talents on the hardwood. At the end of the season it was Gitlin ' s and McCune ' s battling quintets on top, both boast¬ ing identical 8 and 2 records. In the statistics ' department it was Keith Aeschliman pouring in 144 counters, followed closely by Garry Crosbie with 125 points and Phil Gagle with 123. f 38 Keglers Prove Strikes and Spares Forever The alleys exploded as twenty-four intramu¬ ral keglers congregated every Wednesday after school to display their athletic ability. The top honors for the highest game bowled during the season went to Jeff Miner with 210 points. Stan Miller held the honors for the highest series scores and the highest total aver¬ age at 167. The teams of Schoeder and Miner tied for first place. Despite the fact that they had few sup¬ porters, the team gained recognition through much endurance and hard work. A series of wins, the Yorktown, Limberlost, and Pennville Invitationals, the NEIC crown, and first place in the Sectional brought fame to the BHS cross¬ country squad. The first de feat came at the Regional in Ft. Wayne; however, the Harriers placed fourth. This opened a berth for the team at the state finals. The Tigers, number one in the eyes of the Bluffton fans, returned home with the dis¬ tinction of being the only Bluffton team in the past fifty years to go to state. ROW 2: Coach DeWitt, D. Flanked on the left is manager Sam Aeschliman and on the right is coach DeWitt. Endurance is the name of the game. Tiger Gridders Tackle Rough Season Although lacking the credentials of past Bluff- ton squads, this year ' s gridders proved themselves worthy to be called Tigers. Bluffton found the going a little rough during the first half of the sea¬ son—losing five games—but came fighting back to capture three of its next five contests. After beating Heritage 7—6, the Tigers trounced arch rival Norwell 21—0 and NEIC foe East Noble 22—0, thus becoming one of the few Tiger teams ever to deal out back-to-back shutouts. Squad captain Bob Hullinger was selected to the NEIC second team and also received honorable mention on the all-state roster. Jim Kephart and Walt Manthey were given honorable mention on the NEIC team. ROW 4: J. Mettler, T. Kiefer, G. Penrod, B. Kizer, B. Goodwin, J. Almdale, B. Hullinger, M. Lautzenheiser, D. Haecker, S. The BHS Cagers posted 20 victories against only five setbacks. Seven winning games passed before Bluffton relinquished the Holiday Tourney crown to Port¬ land. The Bengals then bounced back for three more successes before losing the NEIC title to DeKalb in a two-point heart-breaker. The Tigers went on to capture six of their next eight regular season games. Dan Houlihan—who became the fifth BHS ath¬ lete to top a career total of 1,000 tallies—received a first team berth on the NEIC roster, while Bob Hullinger was tapped for the second squad and Kent Dentel, Jim Almdale, and Steve Skiles were awarded honorable mention. Tigers Fire Up for Hoosier Hysteria Once again the team to beat, the Tigers entered the tourney intent on carrying away their fourth consecutive Sectional crown. After knocking off upset-minded South Adams in the first game, the Tigers tripped up rival foe Norwell. In the finals Bluffton overpowered Bellmont to earn a berth in the Kokomo Regional. At Kokomo the Tigers ex¬ hibited their talents by beating a towering and highly-favored Peru team. It looked as if Bluffton might go all the way in the night game, but event¬ ually the powerful Haworth squad overwhelmed the weary Bengals to clinch the Regional victory. Dan Houlihan was named to the All-Sectional and All-Regional teams, while Bob Hullinger and Jim Almdale were selected for the All-Regional squad. Go! Tiger starters prepare for battle. ROW 7: T. Reserve Squad Proves Merit in 69-70 Season Under the direction of coach Ed Kershner, the Junior Tigers achieved a record of twelve wins and eight losses. Team leaders in scoring and rebound¬ ing were Kevin Anderson, Ted Sprunger, Geoff Penrod and John Cowens. Many boys were allowed to participate during the season, giving them a chance to gain the experience necessary for a suc¬ cessful team. The boys on this squad showed promise for future Bluffton teams. Geoff reaches for another two points. ROW 7: C. VanOver, K. Shepherd, B. Mailer, J. Makowski, J. Micklitsch, S. Schwartz, T. Smith, T. Cindermen Set ' 70 Pace for BHS The Tiger cindermen underwent a rebuilding season this year, though they did have a successful season. The Tigers placed fifth in the Berne Relays, fourth in the Muncie Relays and tied for seventh place in the NEIC conference. There was one track record broken this year. Steve Mugg broke the mile record, first set by Ernie Schwartz, at the Mississinewa meet. Potential track stars for next year will be Juniors Jim Almdale, John Maggart and Randy Gentis; Sophomores Dave Campbell, Ken Dubach and Steve Anspach; Freshmen Jeff Robles and Steve Fulton. 50 Tiger Golfers Swi ng into Spring Under the coaching of Mr. Keller, the Tiger golfers boasted another excellent season. Led by four-year letterman Dan Houlihan, the Bluffton link men chipped and putted their way to local golfing prominence. Gone from the team next year, along with Houlihan, will be three-year letterman Dave Wolfcale. However, the linksmen look forward to another successful year built around Steve Skiles, Stan Wilson and Mick Murphy. Tiger netters competed with not only the opposi¬ tion, but also the spring winds. Coached by a former BHS tennis player, Rick Fair, the Tiger ten¬ nis team proved to be successful during the sea¬ son. Senior Bob Hullinger and Junior Jerry Meyer led the team, but were assisted by Ted Murray, Mark Niblick, Jeff Miner, Kevin Anderson and John Cowens. Losing only Hullinger, next year, the team will have the experience necessary for a success¬ ful team. Netters Triumphant in Windy Season ROW 7: T. Gilliom, T. Reusser, T. Sprunger, D. Thompson, N. Tiger Nine Fights Until Last Out The young Tiger diamondmen experienced a building season this year. Of the nine man squad, only three were Seniors: short-stop Walt Man¬ they, and veteran outfielders Kevin Beaty and Dan Thompson. Promising prospects returning next season will be catcher Ted Sprunger, infielders Noel Phegley, Tom Benes, and Geoff Penrod. In addition, the entire mound staff headed by Scott Ault and southpaw Keith Claghorn will be re¬ turning. 53 Tiger Athletes Earn Lettermen Awards The names of BHS ' forty-eight lettermen were released at the annual Athletic Banquet held the last week of school. Certain criteria must be met for these athletes to major. A cross country harrier must be one of the team ' s best, a football squad member must play in at least ten quarters of varsity action, a basket¬ ball or a baseball Tiger must participate in two- thirds of the season ' s contests, a cinderman must earn no less than ten points in various track meets, a netter must out-play half of his opponents, and a golfer must take part in two-thirds of the regular season games as well as the sectional and con¬ ference meets. Each letterman received a chenille B for his efforts and accomplishments in sports. Seniors Walt Manthey, Dan Houlihan, Bob Hullinger and Steve Mugg earned blanket awards. Through the combined efforts of twenty-two talented journalists, the Comet was established as a fine school newspaper. Highly effective in keeping the student body informed, the Comet presented factual articles, sensible editorials, and humorous features. Great pains were undergone to maintain the paper ' s high journalistic quality throughout the year. It takes a large measure of ability and hard work to publish a newspaper weekly. Four of the staff members joined the journalism class at the beginning of the second semester and are not in the picture. They are Jan Jackson, Cathy Murray, Steve Reber, and Becky Walburn. Typists prepare articles for impending deadline. 62 Martha Jean relates plans for upcoming paper. Copyreaders can make or break the next issue. The end result is discussed by Debbie, Meleta, and Mrs. Rose. Writing copy requires concentration, imagination. Sophomores Discover Pythagoras and Windmills The Class of 1972 began its high school career by storming the doors of BHS in the fall, num¬ bering 191 strong. These zealous underclassmen started their academic year by recognizing their classmates who maintained a 3.3 or better index during the freshman year. BHS ' enthusiastic sophs gained experience in the world of business as they attacked their first project—selling Bluffton High School sweat¬ shirts. Seventy-eight Sophomores also began preparing for the tests which lie ahead by tackling the National Educational Development Tests administered in the winter. Sophomore officers were Rita Riley, Pam Holmes, Nancy Bushong, and Tim Reusser. D. Adkins B. Allen R. Anderson S. Anspach J. Aguilar P. Bailey T. Bailer C. Barger K. Barringer V. Barwiler D. Their first high school summer behind them, the members of the Class of 1971 arrived at Bluff- ton High School, apprehensive, yet anxious for the academic year to begin. Twenty-two Junior scholars were awarded cer¬ tificates for achieving a 3.4 or better average dur¬ ing their first two years of study, followed by the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, taken by seventy-eight eleventh grade students. The National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test also tried approximately thirty Juniors ' patience and alertness. In the fall, BHS eleventh graders received their long-awaited class rings. Their dramatic efforts resulted in a near professional performance of “Up the Down Staircase. The year ' s finale came with the enjoyment and hard work involved with the Junior-Senior Reception. D. The result was “Old Doc, a three act comedy- drama concerning the careers and lives of old Doc Hillary and his son. Classmates, teachers, and the entire audience were well pleased with the cast ' s first attempt at acting. To make the play the success that it was, it required the combined efforts of the cast and stage crew. rmP S [SfSiiil p$ii bsSssss Flowers for Algernon Proves Senior Success I am afraid. Not of life or death or nothing¬ ness . . . but of wasting it as if I had never been. This line is representative of the dramatic impact of the senior class play Flowers for Algernon. It told the story of Charlie Gordon, a willing vic¬ tim of a strange experiment—a moron, a genius, a man in search of himself. The entire theme of the play was reflective of the indomitable spirit of today ' s youth. 1 1 m ;W 1 I am afraid.” The raisins, I ask you, where were the raisins?” Juniors Extend Deep Southern Hospitality Gone with the Wind was the theme the Juniors selected in decorating the BHS gymnasium for the 1970 Reception. The Seniors—as well as the faculty, the school board, and guests—were welcomed to the all-night affair by Junior Class President Kevin Anderson, who, in wishing the Seniors good fortune, complimented them as a class on their many and varied achievements. Senior Class President David Phillips responded, congratulating the Juniors on their successful attempts at preparing the meal, the decor, and the entertainment. Bluffton musician Mrs. Raymond Cox provided dinner music at the organ, while the Campus Crowd from Ball State sang several numbers. The Dick Alexander Orchestra and the Joshua fur¬ nished the dance music for the evening—and morning—of enjoyment. Members of the Prom Court, elected by BHS Juniors and Seniors, were Nancy Dold, second attendant; Sylvia Johnson, first attend¬ ant; Dan Houlihan, king; Jan Jackson, queen; Steve Mugg, first attendant; David Phillips, second attendant. 88 BHS Welcomes Brazilian Student Fred Burgos Bluffton High School welcomed an addition to its student body during the second semester. Frederico Jose Requeita de Sousa Burgos was an exchange student from Brazilia, Brazil. Fred came to this country with the foreign exchange pro¬ gram, Youth for Understanding and stayed in Bluffton for six months, while living with the Sheets family. Fred enjoyed basketball, playing the guitar and piano, but especially liked playing chess. In Brazil, he holds the title of junior Chess Champion. Though American customs differ widely from those in Brazil, Fred adjusted with ease. At the annual Class Day ceremonies, Fred was awarded a certificate of recognition from Mr. Park. 89 ROW 3: Rick Collins, Kiwanis Merit Award; Tom Gerber, 3.6 Scholastic index; Dave Haecker, Attendance Award; Jim Kephart, American Legion Award; Jan Wimmer, Tri Kappa Art Award; Dennis Rush, 3.6 Scholastic index; Sam Aeschliman, Emshwiller Good Fellowship Award. End-of-School-Year Ceremonies Honor 134 Bluffton Grads The graduating Seniors finalized their high school careers with the traditional Baccalaureate, Class Day, and Commencement ceremonies. Garbed in caps and gowns, the 1970 grads were charged with the responsibility of answering the question Where Are You Going? by Bacca¬ laureate speaker the Rev. Joe Elliot. During the Class Day observances, seven grad¬ uates were lauded for achieving a 3.6 or better scholastic index, while a number of Seniors received special awards and scholarships. Besides the delivery of the Class History and Prophecy, Senior President Dave Phillips delegated the duties of his office—symbolized in the Senior Key —to Junior President Kevin Anderson. That evening Salutatorian Tom Gerber wel¬ comed the capacity crowd to the Commencement exercises, while student orator Kathy Kaade addressed the Class on Our Constitution: A Possession Which Implies a Duty. Following the distribution of diplomas by School Board Vice President Ned Carnall and Principal Park, Valedictorian Susan Rivar imparted the Farewell, and the Class of 1970 turned its tassels from left to right.
