v W ' Cfdfifi In September nineteen-hundred and forty-nine, 92 mischievous and bashful little boys and girls first entered Bluff City High School. Our chief ambitions were to learn the place and the faculty, which we did with much effort. At first we were always at the wrong places at the wrong times, but we soon settled down to the routine of school life. The class officers we elected for our Freshman year were: Harold Pippin, President, Bill Pierce, Vice-President, Elaine Carrier, Treasurer, and Beckey Cornett and Barbara Grace, Reporters. Our sponsors for the four years were: Mrs. Ruth Stone, Coach Charlie Fleming, and Mr. W. A. Meredith. During the fall we held our first class outing. We had a wonderful time eating hot dogs and every- thing that goes with them, afterwards we went to the football game at Bristol to see Tennessee High vs. Johnson City. The majority of the class attended and everyone had a grand time. We entered our sophomore year with less awe of the upper classmen and faculty. We were not so bashful and much more mischievous. Our class offi- cers for this term were: Harold Pippin, President, Tommy Arnold, Vice-Presidentg George Honeycutt, Secretary-Treasurer, Matt Cox, Jr. and Joanne O,Dell, Reporters. That year we enjoyed a full day of activity at Hungry Mother Park. We were a jolly class when we entered our Junior year at B. C. H. S. Again we elected Harold Pippin as our President, Tommy Arnold, Vice-President, Jean Penley, Secretary, Martha Anne Carrier, Treas- urerg George Honeycutt and Helen Dishner as Re- porters. Mrs. Dorothy Sanders became one of our sponsors. That year proved to be filled with excitement, socials, and a little more learning than usual. We held our Junior-Senior Banquet at Hotel Bristol in February. Mr. Tom Frye, Pastor of the First Presby- terian Church, Bristol, was guest speaker. The theme Sweethearts added to information as well as the fun. This was our gift to the Seniors of 'S2. The Junior Play Sunbonnet Jane of Sycamore Lane was a great hit. Betty Sue Hawks played the leading role as Sunbonnet Jane. In the fall of '52 the great day finally arrived. We were seniors at last! W'e elected as our class offic- ers to reign over us the last nine months of our high school career, Harold Pippin, President, Tommy Ar- nold, Vice-Presidentg Elizabeth -Hopkins, Secretary, Jesse Smith, Treasurer, and Norene Vance and George Honeycutt, Reporters. Later we elected Wanda Strickler, Treasurer when Jesse Smith went to the Navy. Fellow classmates, do you remember what happen- ed on November 7? All the seniors were crowded in iafory the little room anxiously awaiting Mr. Carrier's re- turn from the depot with our class rings. They were beautiful and we were completely happy. As seniors, we are sorry to have lost two of our close friends and fellow classmates, Jesse Smith and Howard Cross, who left us for a very worthy cause- to fight for our country. Do you recall all the confusion and fun we had on December 2? Dr. Derthick was here giving vo- cational tests and Mr. Inscho was taking pictures for our yearbook. To top it all .the Music Department was having dress rehearsal for the operetta, The Lady Says Yesf' Our class has broken the record for young mar- riages. Five of our senior classmates were married during our last year of school. These were: Helen Andis Greene, Joan Stafford Ball, Norma Woods Kay- lor, Matt Cox, Jr., and Robert Leonard. To some graduation from high school seems the end of a formal education. But graduation is more than that. We have just begun to learn, and whether we enter college or begin a career, or be home makers, we shall endeavor to go forward much better equip- ped than those who have not been here. If the seniors could choose a mascot, I'm sure it would be Matt's small son, Matthew Douglas. Re- member the day Matt Came 'to school late, handing out cigars? As we leave Bluff City this year, we have in our hearts a touch of sadness. We shall never forget the true words of our school song- and as we sadly start, our journey far apart, a part of every heart lingers here. NORENE VANCE Page 17
