In the first game of the double- header against Lunenburg, we started off playing well, but they came back in the last inning to win by two runs at 6 to 4. In the second game our pitch- ers were off the mark and we lost 6-2. Next we played in the tournament at Brunswick Senior High School. In the first game, we beat the home team Brunswick by the score of 4-2. In the championship game we were playing Randolph-Henry High School. We were just as good a team as they were but we played poorly and they played well and won 7-1. We played some nondistrict games before the district race started and won all of these games. Then on a Tuesday night in March the district games started and Blue- stone was playing Brunswick. Blue- stone came in with a lackadaisical atti- tude thinking they were going to win easy, but Brunswick was a much im- proved team from the one we played in the tournament. Brunswick took the game by a score of 7-1. After that Bluestone went on a tear and won every other district game left except two. One was a 0-0 tie against Randolph-Henry and the oth- er was a heartbreaking loss to Nottoway in the last district game of Bluestone Baseball Team No. 1 the year. During their winning streak, Bluestone played very good baseball. In the district championship game at Randolph-Henry it was tied 1-1 going into the last inning and Bluestone came out a winner 3-1. Bluestone had finally done it. For the first time in 20 years they were district champions. Between the final district game and the regional there was a district tour- nament to decide the number two team from our district that was to go to the regionals also. We lost the first game. Randolph-Henry won the tour- nament. In our first game of the regionals we were to play a team out of Richmond. They were Midolothian. They were a solid ball team through and through. At the end of the game we had won 22) The next team we were to play was Bruton. They were from near Williamsburg. They were an average ball club, but we won by six runs at 10-4. Next we were to play Varina High School at their home field. They were located on the east side of Richmond. We stretched out and got ready to play. Varina was a very, very good baseball team. We played even throughout the game. In the next to last inning we were leading 6-4. All we had to do was keep them from scor- ing any more runs. They had two more chances to hit. On their first bat we held them. Going into the last in- HA Ira, ning we wanted some insurance runs, but we didn’t get any. They came to the plate, their last chance. They scored one run, but they couldn't get any more and we went on to win by the score of 6-5. Bluestone had done something that no other team in Bluestone histo- ry has ever done and that is win a regional championship. We were headed to the State Tournament. We were to play the Region Il champions, Park-View Sterling. They were a very, very, very good team. We played pretty even until the 4th inning. In the 4th inning we made 4 or 5 costly errors which gave them a 9-3 lead. We started to come back, but it was too late. They had just gotten too far out in front. They won the game 9- a They were real nice, because after the game the team’s parents had fixed us supper. Their coaches came over and talked to us, as well as some of the ball players. One of their coaches complimented us by saying that they were lucky to have won. On the way home we figured it out, and if it hadn’t been for that one bad inning, we would have won 5-4. We might not have won the state tournament but we still had the best season a Bluestone team has ever had. by Mike Jones 49 The Baronettes were a young but competitive team. They were coached by Doris Langhorne and the team was 6-4 in the district. Camille Barnette was leading scorer on the team and made Ist team all-district and honorable men- tion all-regional. Donna Burwell made 2nd team all-district. Janet Bess and Vandelisa Clay received honorable mention all-district. The Baronettes were mostly freshmen and sopho- mores.
