The Booster Club accepted the challenge and with the assistance of Johnny Farmer and Merrill Crowder, who furnished equipment and time for the project. Ralph Bragg availed his pond to us during the summer months for the irrigation of the field. The field was ready for the first football game and the many com- ments from patrons and students about our field being one of the best in the district made the project worth the ef- fort. Ly With a baseball field that was in desperate need of repairs, the season went ex- ceptionally well. “At the beginning of the season the players were not looking their best,’’ says Coach Bowles, ‘‘plus there was lots of rainy weather which resulted in several cancelled games.”’ The players commented on the long school bus rides be- ing uncomfortable, but if we won it helped to ease the discomfort. The defense hurt the team (giving up many runs) but the offense was good enough to get the BARONS’ third place. Baseball 11 Track ’79 Boys’ Track Upper right: Boys’ Track: seated — J. Williams, E. Prom 15 Welcome tO Fantasy Island There was only one element missing from the prom — Mr. Roark and Tatoo were not there to greet us as we arrived! In- stead, ‘‘Harvest’’ was there to entertain us with the latest hits. Ms. Blackwell, head sponsor for the prom, rounded juniors up to work on decorations dur- ing the week before the “big night’. Even though there was a lack of interest on some of the Junior's part, the final product turned out beautifully. The theme, ‘Fantasy Island,” was portrayed by a small island in the center of the gymnasium. The island was surrounded by bamboo and palm trees and the ceiling was covered with blue, yellow, and green streamers. The dance floor was con- sistently filled with couples dancing to the latest hits played by the band ‘‘Harvest’’. Everyone attending agreed that this was one of the better Junior-Senior proms at Bluestone. 16 Prom : Top center: Lanita Hudgins and Curtis Middle: Seniors, Juniors and_ their Bowers checking in. guests. Oct. 17 crazy hats were worn. There were contests held to see who had the craziest hats. On Oct. 18 we had to see who could dress the tackiest. Oct. 19 you were to wear blue and gold. On Wed- nesday night Oct. 17 we had a bonfire but to everyone’s surprise it wouldn’t light. Everything was used from play books to toilet paper. After an hour of trying to get it started and finally lit the band played a few songs. Afterwards the students along with the parents and cheerleaders got fired upped with some cheers. Everyone appeared to be having a great time. 30 Homecoming Song leabell: Saar: Homecoming @yreen 1979-1980 The Homecoming court was elected by the homerooms. The team was expected to be one of the best at Bluestone in many years. (Even though the BARONS ended up five and five, they built up respect from the community fans and especially the other teams.) The interest ran high at the beginning of the season with an average of 35 players per practice. Bill Bowles, head coach, did another excellent job tak- ing care of the line. Tim Clary handling the backfield and Lindell Palmer working the ends rounded out our coaching staff. The team captains were seniors Junnie Kersey, William Morse, Gary Rogers, Donnie Clary, and Larry Redd. The BARONS had an overall record of five and five. They stood four and four in the district which gave them fourth place. The team will be losing 18 seniors next year Asana which will definitely hurt the team. The BARONS went through the season without too many serious injuries. William Morse had a shoulder separation but was able to recover after two games. Larry Redd was out three games with a bad knee. Donald Wade pulled liga- ments in his foot and missed two games, hurting the kick- ing gams. Andy Hawkins and Donald Wade played defen- sive ends, while Larry Redd, James Brown, and Tony Crute were the three linebackers. The secondary consisted of William Morse, Junnie Kersey, and Wayne Pruett. The offense had problems at first. Fumbles, penalties and poor assignments were the key reasons the BARONS J. Brown on the move. 50 Football lost their first three games. After this was corrected, the BARONS won 5 of the last 7 games. The BARONS’ scoring was led by senior running back Junnie Kersey. He had 977 yards rushing for the year, scoring 66 points. He had a remarkable 9.1 yards per carry. He was an All District player and also made the Regional Team. He is the first one in the school’s history to do this. James Brown had 26 points for the year. He had over 700 yards rushing, which was the fourth highest yardage in the district. si a aa he ty ne Bluestone recovers a fumble. Donald Wade had a good year kicking. He kicked a 40 yard field goal, which was the first in the school’s history. He broke a school record kicking 6 extra points for 6 attempts in one game. D. Clary and J. Kersey waiting for the toss. A. Hawkins tackling a Parkview runner. For the season he had 18 points. Andy Wilkerson and Wayne Pruett had two touchdown passes each. William Morse had two 50 yard touchdown runs after his shoulder injury. He averaged 6 yards per carry. Warren Pruett made a touchdown and threw 5 touchdown passes for the season. Jerome Kersey scored on a pass, and Wayne Edgerton had an 8 yard run for a touchdown. : The offensive line was a’ made up of Rainer Coleman, Richard Shelton, Andy Hawkins, Donnie Clary, Gary Rogers, and Larry Redd. The line was one of the smallest in the district but their quickness made up for it. The BARONS had eight players to make the district team. The first team players were: Junnie Kersey, run- ning back; Larry Redd, linebacker; and Donald Wade, kicker. The second J. Brown finds the defense. team players were: Andy Hawkins, defensive end; Gary Rogers, offensive guard; Donnie Clary, center; James Brown, running back; and William Morse, defensive secondary. W. Pruett looks things over. Coach Bowles. The Junior Class was a busy one. They sold cookies and made ap- proximately $2500.00 for the prom. The Junior Class took the S.A.T.’s, a test which consists of reading, language arts, and mathematics. Juniors who plan to at- tend colleges took the college board tests. Director Ricky Allgood went before the School Board and requested financial aid. The School Board donated part of the total cost to the band to purchase 60 new uniforms from the Stanbury Uniform Company in Melbrook, Missouri. The remaining monies were raised by the Band Boosters. Burlington Industries supplied the material to make the uniforms. Upon completion the uniforms were sent to Rich- mond where Mr. Allgood, with the help of Mr. Conners, went to pick-up the uniforms. The band participated in all of the home football games and away games. The band also participated in parades at South Boston, Farmville, Lawerence, Keysville, Clarksville, and Chase City. ee SS 3 “i, : $s i, j Pic. 1. This portable piano will allow the choir and band to travel in the area and have a piano that they are accustomed to and one that is in tune. Students and faculty members joined the choir at Christmas time to present the Cantata ‘‘Down From His Glory’’ by John Peterson. The Cantata used a taped accompaniment and was well received by the Student body. There was a lot more school spirit, and we ventured into organizing a pep club, but was not successful. The cheering squad was organized dif- ferently this year, participants could cheer for whatever season they chose, girls’ basketball, football, or boys’ basketball. We had a welcome addition of three young men to squad for boys’ basketball. They are: Albert Evans, Eric Fowlkes, and Marvin Terry. This was the first time in the history of Bluestone, and Mecklenburg County, that guys have been cheerleaders. Their addition added a lot of enthusiasm and diversity to the squad. The cheerleaders are currently under the sponsorship of Miss Brenda Blackwell and squad leaders, Carolyn Mangum and Sher- veryn Hayes. The DECA program of work in- cludes activities such as sales projects, ban- quets, recreational activities, district meetings, and participation in community pro- jects. Our biggest fund raising project was a disco dance held in Oct. after a football game. During Sept. our DECA officers attended an officers training conference at Halifax County Senior High School. There the students learned about their duties and responsibilities as officers of the club. In Oct. fourteen DECA members attended the fall rally at George Washington High School in Danville. The stu- dents learned how to put together a good DECA Chapter and the ingredients that make a Chapter of the Year. These students also learned how to improve the community through various community projects as well as various mini projects that they could do under each DECA category: civic consciousness, vocational understanding, social intelligence, and leadership development. The fall rally concluded with a fashion show, which the stu- dents enjoyed. In Dec. our DECA club worked hard to com- plete a float for the Christmas parade. Their efforts paid off as they won the second place trophy. This was also the month when our DECA notebooks arrived and each student in DE received one. 1. The National Beta Club is a national student service whose objectives are: promote citizenship and leadership: to encourage fellowship and cooperation: to reward effort and achievement: to inspire honesty and tolerance. The Beta Club is set up and is operated to promote the American way of life among high-school students. It has no ideology — either social, political, economic, or religious — to promulgate. Its sole pur- pose is to cooperate with the administrations of the high schools in forwarding the school program and, by rewarding merit and achieve- ment among the students, to build character and cultivate a serious desire for the higher. things of life.
