Dirk s and Crowder Leave Coaching — ae See onli iti Bluestone’s cindermen and women were ee coached by Donnie Crowder and Catherine Dirks. Coach Crowder and his men had a rough season. Thirty boys started the season but only eighteen were dedicated enough to finish. Though few in number they were high in spirit. Led by their captain Irvin “‘the Bird’’ White, who ran the 100, 220, and 880 yards, but found his best event in the triple jump. The team placed third in the district. Several mem- bers went to the regional but only “‘Bird’’ went to the state. The girl’s track team under the coaching of Mrs. Dirks took third place in the district. They were also asked to participate in the Fluvanna Invitational. In the regional, the relay team of Carolyn Spencer, Karen Sim- mons, Josephine Jones and Kimberly Reese placed 4th in the 440 and 880. Carolyn Spencer placed 4th in the long jump which gave her a berth in the state meet at Harrisonburg. ie 7 B 52% Brunswick 63 2 Mataoca 51 Lovi6 Nottoway 67 Greensville 76 U. 35 Nottoway 83 Mataoca 49 E 34 Brunswick 13 Mataoca 56 S 41% Nottoway 67'% Greensville 9 T.. 28% Brunswick 402 Mataoca 60 O N E Top: Rhonda Gooch cheers for Bluestone Cinderman. The Band ‘‘Casper’’ was hired for the night in May. All of the materials were in and waiting for the day they could be used. ‘‘Baron Domain”’ was chosen as the theme and the usual dreary gym was transformed into the inside of a castle complete with flags, streamers and castle-like motifs. Most of the money for their event came from the cookie sales held by Juniors each year. The prom was held late in May and was a huge success even if everyone had other par- ties to attend which left the last hour to the chaperones who enjoy ‘‘Casper”’ and ‘‘Baron Country.’’ Top: Juniors look on while Billy Crowder gets the roof ready. Let’s just hope our offer is one the world can’t refuse. The question seems to be ‘what place does the world have to offer us.’ Seniors have a choice between colleges, armed services, the job market, or immediately starting a home. This will be accomplished by decisions — our deci- sions. Because of this, seniors have plenty of con- cerns. One is grades. We need decent grades to get into college or the armed services or just to get out of high school. Other seniors are con- cerned about finding a job or choosing a major which is practical. Some seniors are concerned about finding the perfect mate and settling down, while others worry about how long the parties will last. All seniors probably wonder how the decisions we have made now will af- fect the rest of our lives. : There is life after high school, but it’s only what we make it! Football 69 The Bluestone Baron’s 1978 football season will be well remembered. The reorganized Booster Club, known as Bluestone Sports Incorporated, has immensely helped the football program financially. The Boosters raised some three hundred dollars to relieve the players of the high cost of in- surance which is a necessity to every member of the team. This year’s football team has improved enormously, mentally as well as physically. Coach Bill Bowles, who succeeded Donnie Crowder, as head coach, has done an excellent job of getting the football program organized. Moving up from the Junior High, Tim Clary has taken the position of assistant coach. Lindell Palmer has returned for his fourth season with the Barons. Along with the new leadership, the team picked three cap- tains. The Captains for this year were Fred Lindholm, Larry Redd, and William Morse. Throughout the year the team looked up to them for moral support and guidance. At the beginning of the season, everyone had high hopes because of the large turnout of partici- pants for the first night of practice. The anticipa- tion from the 40 expected players dwindled everyones hopes as the season ended with a mear 20 players to dress out. This is a prime example of the way student apathy has troubled the football program. This year’s team was not plagued by serious in- juries as it has been in the past. Most of the in- juries occurred towards the end of the season. The worst injuries were a fractured shoulder and a separated shoulder, along with the usual pulled muscles and tendons. The Barons had six players to make the district team. Those players were Larry Redd, Andy Hawkins, Gary Rogers, William Morse, Mike Newton, and Junnie Kersey. Larry Redd was chosen as offensive Guard and defensive line backer for first team. Andy Hawkins was chosen as second team offensive and defensive tackle. 70 Football Mike Newton, quarter crushing defense. - William Morse is helped off the dé field. Top Left: Mighty Baron’s defense await the snap. Middle Left: Problems?? Bottom Left: Barons try for yardage. Right: Head Coach Bowles explains how the play should have gone. An overall record of 4 and 6 shows that the Barons have already improved since last year. The Barons stand 3 and 5 in the District games. Much is to be ex- pected in next year’s team with 16 returning juniors having starting experience. The Barons will definitely give the district teams a run for the money next year. Defense held its own ground, even though the Barons lost six games. The Barons had three shutouts as a result of a tough defense. Larry Redd was a great asset to the defense with his tackling ability. The quickness of the Baron offense made up for the lack of size. The front line included Odel Redd, Larry Redd, Donnie Clary, Gary Rogers, and Andy Hawkins. Donald Wade played tight end and Wayne Pruett, split end. The backfield was just as quick as the line, with Junior Kersey, William Morse, Mike Newton, quar- terback, and Fred Lindholm fullback. Penalties and fumbles were a big problem during the season, especially the Park View game with 175 yards in penalties. The Barons had over 130 points on the board in their running game for the season. With returning members the team will be tops and give op- posing defenses all they can handle. The two were chosen by outside judges. Director Walt Conner said this was a great opportunity for the two choir members and hope more will be able to at- tend in years to come. The choir not only had a new director, Walter Conner but also an accompanist, Tony Wood. This is the first year in many years that the choir has had an accompanist.
