Preface Life at Bluestone in 1974 was quite different from that of previous years. Many of the changes were due, in part, to a new principal, William Baker. Therefore, in this year ' s GOLDEN LINK, the staff has tried to show these various changes, how they affected students ' lives, and, hopefully, how they have made our school a better one. I would like to thank various companies and personalities for their encouragement and support in the creation and publication of the GOLDEN LINK. Without the help and patience of Mrs. Stumps, Mr. Baker, Mr. Conner, Max Ward and Delmar Company, The Clarksville Times, The Mecklenburg News, and The Chase City Progress; the cooperation of students and teachers; and the hard work exerted by active staff members, the 1974 GOLDEN LINK could have never become a reality. In Memoriam Helen T. Wilson 1923-1974 Because I Could Not Stop for Death Because I could not stop for Death, He kindly stopped for me; The carriage held but just ourselves And Immortality. We slowly drove, he knew no haste. And I had put away My labor, and my leisure too. For his civility. We passed the school where children played Their lessons scarcely done; We passed the fields of gazing grain. We passed the setting sun. We paused before a house that seemed A swelling in the ground; The roof was scarcely visible. The cornice but a mound. Since then ' tis centuries; but each Feels shorter than the day I first surmised the horses ' heads Were toward eternity. Emily Dickinson 4 Memoriam

BAKER: In the history of Bluestone Senior High, the school has undergone four major phases. Phase I occurred when the school was built and opened for the first time for high school students. These students came from the Chase City, Clarksville, and Boydton areas. Phase II occurred when Mr. W. E. Moore became the new principal of the school and Phase III appeared with the occurrence of segregation among the school systems. Phase IV has been labeled BAKER. In 1974, Bluestone not only acquired a new principal, Mr. Bill Baker, but she also found herself amid new policies, ideas, and rules. For example, a definite dress code was established for both boys and girls, and Grub Day was established as one of Bluestone ' s dress holidays. Also new to the students were the all-dreaded deficiency reports. These were only seen by those people who did not make a required average. These and many more are revealed in the following pages . . . Phase IV 6 Opening
