We gratefully acknowledge those people and businesses fRat have supported The Golden Link 1 974. Patrons 3 In Memoriam Helen T. Wilson 1923-1974 Because I Could Not Stop for Death Because I could not stop for Death, He kindly stopped for me; The carriage held but just ourselves And Immortality. We slowly drove, he knew no haste. And I had put away My labor, and my leisure too. For his civility. We passed the school where children played Their lessons scarcely done; We passed the fields of gazing grain. We passed the setting sun. We paused before a house that seemed A swelling in the ground; The roof was scarcely visible. The cornice but a mound. Since then ' tis centuries; but each Feels shorter than the day I first surmised the horses ' heads Were toward eternity. Emily Dickinson 4 Memoriam Preface Life at Bluestone in 1974 was quite different from that of previous years. Many of the changes were due, in part, to a new principal, William Baker. Therefore, in this year ' s GOLDEN LINK, the staff has tried to show these various changes, how they affected students ' lives, and, hopefully, how they have made our school a better one. I would like to thank various companies and personalities for their encouragement and support in the creation and publication of the GOLDEN LINK. Without the help and patience of Mrs. Stumps, Mr. Baker, Mr. Conner, Max Ward and Delmar Company, The Clarksville Times, The Mecklenburg News, and The Chase City Progress; the cooperation of students and teachers; and the hard work exerted by active staff members, the 1974 GOLDEN LINK could have never become a reality. Bottom; At the prom, the appearance of new girlfriends or new boyfriends completes the scene Opening 5 BAKER: In the history of Bluestone Senior High, the school has undergone four major phases. Phase I occurred when the school was built and opened for the first time for high school students. These students came from the Chase City, Clarksville, and Boydton areas. Phase II occurred when Mr. W. E. Moore became the new principal of the school and Phase III appeared with the occurrence of segregation among the school systems. Phase IV has been labeled BAKER. In 1974, Bluestone not only acquired a new principal, Mr. Bill Baker, but she also found herself amid new policies, ideas, and rules. For example, a definite dress code was established for both boys and girls, and Grub Day was established as one of Bluestone ' s dress holidays. Also new to the students were the all-dreaded deficiency reports. These were only seen by those people who did not make a required average. These and many more are revealed in the following pages . . . Phase IV 6 Opening r iV Opposite Page, Top: Mrs. Balough, the new choral teacher, reviews her music with the students. Student Life 19 ' Shower Of Stars ' Begins To Shine The junior class gathered seemingly worthless articles such as broken mirrors, old newspapers, chicken wire, and fishing line to begin the decorations for the ' 73 prom. The fishing line was used to hang the sky and the mirrors, chicken wire, and old news- papers were used in constructing the meteorite. The gigantic ball was admired by many who attended the prom, and the decorations in general were said to be the most imaginative seen anywhere. The diligent work of many juniors proved to be rewarding. 20 Student Life Opposite Page, Left: Gracie Davis, Jon Johnson, and Linda Richard- son drape the streamers for the new wall. Student Life 21 1973 Prom Bursts Into A Shimmering Success The 1973 Prom proved to be a great success due to the hard work of the Junior Class. Their innovative minds developed many ideas, such as, streamers which camouflag- ed the walls, and a gym sky lit with fluorescent stars. Black lights, placed around the gym, illuminated the shining ceiling as well as the prisms of mirror on the meteorite that hung in the center. This, plus music provided by the The Eliminators , made the evening a memorable event. The perfumed refreshment area and its table, which contained a beautiful centerpiece of rainbow colors, provided the more congenial atmosphere for relaxation and friendly chatter. There is no doubt that the many long hours and weeks of work were well worthwhile. 22 Student Life k Opposite page, left: Shelby Newton chooses from all the goodies on the refreshment table. They won two meets and lost two. In the district meet, they came out third place winners in the shotput, high hurdles, 440 relay, and 880 relay; second place in the mile relay; and first place in the 880. Walter Spain in the 880 broke the school, district, and regional record when he set a time of 2:02:05. In the regional meet they finished eighth out of the fourteen teams that entered. They also entered the State meet where Walter Spain came in third in the 880 run, and Jerry Hillard came in sixth in the mile. Eight members, Walter Spain, Jerry Hillard, Gray Ramsey, Reginald Dodson, Dennis Tucker, Kenneth Tucker, Frank Morse, and Kelly Puryear, went to the Maynord C. Clayton Relays. Athletics 37 Barons Suffer Through Long Season The young Baron baseball team, playing with only two seniors in the starting line-up, suffered through a long season in which nearly every error and mistake cost dearly. After winning the opener with Brunswick, the team ' s record was 2-2 after four games. This included a thril- ling 0-1 loss to cross county rivals, the Dragons of Park View. The Barons then proceeded to go on a ten game losing streak to finish the season 2 and 1 2. Among them were a car wash, the selling of pom-poms, and pin-ups. The cheerleaders always had a way of keeping the school happy and full of spirit. With a large squad, the cheerleaders had many new ideas and cheers. These ideas were aided by their trip to day camp held at Meredith College at Raleigh, North Carolina. On many occasions members of the Junior High Band were asked to play with them as they were rebuilding from the loss of so many seniors last year. The Band sponsored the Sweetheart Dance and furnished two combos made up of members of the Band. One, the Stage Band, performed in several of the school ' s concerts. As a result of the efforts of the school board, new carpet was added to the bandroom. This greatly improved the room ' s appearance as well as its acoustics. The choir performed in a number of assembly programs throughout the school year, and all choir members were expected to participate. In addition to the regular full choir, there were a number of soloists and ensemble groups within the choir. These soloists and ensemble members per- formed on regular choral concert programs and gave special recitals. The choir performed a wide variety of music, ranging from modern popular to early classics, sacred and secular. During class periods the choir members spent some time in expanding their musical skills: learning to read music, becoming acquainted with different musical styles, and learning to perform at the keyboard. These skills enabled the choir members to perform better as an integrated unit. The purpose of the choir was twofold: For educa- tion and for enjoyment. In choir, they strived to become well-versed in all types of music and through concert performances to pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm to others. People 115 Reserved Seats, Short Schedules Place Among Senior Privileges Reserved seats, early lunch bells, and short schedules were among this year ' s senior privileges. Although this year ' s graduating class was well over 190 members, the senior class strength wasn ' t fully felt during this year ' s many pep rallies due to the fact that many seniors left on short schedules. Once again the class planned another prank supposedly to have been pulled at graduation. Also rumors were circulated that the seniors would graduate one week early, but it turned out to be only one day. In keeping with tradition, the seniors once again discovered the theme of the Junior-Senior prom. Lucille Barnes Troy Franklin Bowers Chuck Beam Lee Brankley Donald Harvey Adcock Danny Aye Neal E. People 133 Juniors Take On New Perspectives The Junior Class of 1973 — 74 started off the year with great expectations of upcoming events. Expectations were fulfilled by a very successful cookie sale, profiting $1200 for the Jr. — Sr. Prom. With part of the money earned, the Juniors ' attention was then focused on happenings leading up to their special event. Ideas were circulated and decisions were made and the prom was on its way. With the receiving of class rings in January, many Juniors suddenly realized that graduation was only a year or so away. With that thought in mind, they seemingly saw Bluestone in a new perspective. People 1 39 Sophomores Overcome Usual Problems Even though they were a little nervous at first, the sophomores were full of life and adjusted terrifically to their new school. They had the usual problems, such as confusing their schedules and getting lost. They got lost due to the fact that the plan of BSHS is the exact opposite of BJHS. However, none of these problems held the sopho- mores back. The sophomores were eager to join many clubs. Many became members of the Golden Link Staff and Monitor Staff. Others joined the FFA, FHA, FBLA, Biology Club, Pep Club, the Band and all kinds of sports. The sophomores enjoyed their first year at BSHS, but towards the end of the school term, they became excited about becoming juniors. Sophomores find time to dream in Biology class.
