Not many realize the effort that she has spent on the mu- sic program at Bluestone. Besides the choral classes that she teaches at BSHS, she is also working with the choral group at the junior high. Together with the band, Mrs. Owen ' s choral club present- ed a talent show to the students at Bluestone and provided music during most of the assemblies. Mrs. Owen will be retiring this year after fifteen years at Bluestone. She will be missed by both students and faculty and so to this active leader, we dedicate the 1973 GOLDEN LINK. However, a look at daily life starts in September ' 72. We hope we have shown a glimpse of life as it really is at Bluestone. There would be no Golden Link ' 73 but for the help of Mrs. Stumps, Mr. Partridge, Max Ward and Delmar Company, Mr. Moore, The Clarksville Times, The Mecklenburg News; the support of community and students; and the dedication of our staff photographers and active staff members. We owe special thanks to each of these for their help and cooperation. Kathy Sheppard, Editor-in-Chief TOP LEFT: The parking lot is full but deserted. TOP RIGHT: Mr. Watson goes over some papers. BOTTOM LEFT: Wil- lis Hargrove counts SCA money. BOT- TOM RIGHT: The hall is quiet for the moment. flA Bluestone, located in the middle of three towns, lies approximately eight miles from each. This has a very definite effect on its students. They don ' t have to contend with big city problems such as pollution, high crime rate, or racial upheaval. There looms, instead, the problems of lack of financial support, transportation to and from after-school activities, an d limited facilities and course availability. Perhaps the biggest problem is apathy. Support of sports, social activities, extracurricular activities has gone down the drain. Yet, some determined students, teachers, and administrators have worked to eliminate this apathetic attitude. Student Life rV ' - ' Life is adventure in experience, and when you are no longer greedy for the last drop of it, it means that you have set your face. . . to the day when you shall depart. . . — Donald C. Peattie Enchanted forest starts to grow The 1972 prom was entitled The Enchanted Forest. The finished forest sprang from a group of elves building walls, making clouds, streams and trees. All of the elves came from the Junior class. It seemed whenever a senior happened to enter the Enchanted Forest, the elves would attack. It was all great fun, even though many hours were spent making the forest enchanted. The Junior elves, unfortunately, did not have the power to enchant a forest overnight. The music, which was played by The Lan- cers, was enjoyed by everyone. The foun- tain, which was in the center of the forest, which was made of flowers, gave an air of enchantment to the prom. OPPOS. It was given on the Thursday night before the homecoming game and was a tremendous success. There was a live band made up of some of the students from the school. Also the homecoming court for Friday night ' s halftime was announced. The occasion was enjoyed by both students and faculty. k k 18 TOP; James Moseley sneezes while the band plays on. One may hear, Oh, no, I haven ' t studied for my vocabulary test! or Did you hear about So-and-So? Some people sit quietly in classrooms or the library talk- ing or studying. Others roam the halls looking for excitement (where is it?). Still others fill up at the store in Skipwith before arriving at school at the very last minute. Then, there are those necessary things to attend to, such as getting that excuse signed, making sure announce- ments are in the office, attending the pep rally, (where is everyone?), and of course, visiting out at the smoking area. OPPOSITE PAGE: With her ever faithful cart, Mrs. Rucker heads for the office to check in. THIS PAGE, TOP LEFT; Another day begins as the last two buses unload. There is probably no other place so widely used besides the cafeteria. Pep rallies, assemblies, meetings, ball games, the prom, other dances, and phys. ed class- es are only some of the activities which take place there. Though this may appear unusual to any stranger, it is quite a common sight for all students. Another thing that is quite common for the students in Mrs. Talley ' s English class, is the frequent visits of Kathy Sheppard on business. Also, the sight of Mr. Rucker in- structing one of his classes as substitute teacher is comforting to the students, because without Mr. Rucker, where would all of Bluestone ' s students be? BOTTOM: Bright sunlight brings a smile to everyone ' s face as they anticipate the afternoon ' s activities. 3:00 is the happiest time of day at BSHS As the day wears on and on students cannot help but think of that glorious three o ' clock bell. Sixth period classes tend to be a lot of fun as the teacher attempts to set an example for the students and not go to sleep. Finally the three o ' clock bell rings. People are racing to their lockers, teachers are breathing a sign of relief and the bus drivers troup bravely to their buses knowing that they will now have to put up with the students ' jubilation. A cloud of dust and smoke is seen in the parking lot as students try to get into their cars without being hit by another car, thus inventing a new game; Dodge The Moving Vehicle. Many students have after school jobs and rush to these in the afternoons. Others just go home to goof off or find the gang and shoot some roundball. Some of the more studious pupils do homework? As the dust and smoke clears the buses leave. The student parking lot is emptied and the teachers go home. The halls are no longer filled with friendly salutations or the mumble of between class gossip. The only sound that is heard is the gentle but con- stant sound of the custodian ' s broom, preparing for another day when the three o ' clock bell will bring unlimited exuberance to the faculty and student body. t f i 1 Organizations I I ‘ iirii ' iT ' rfc il t All your strength is in your union. The club also sponsored a “Teacher Appreciation Day on Valen- tine ' s Day. Each teacher was given a little token of appreciation and refreshments were served to them in the lounge. They had a new sponsor, Mrs. Stumps, Ads were done away with, more pages and a new section, academics, were add- ed. Some things remained the same, however. Not everyone who belonged on the staff bothered to come to meetings or turn in their work on time. Deadlines were not made on time. There was constant griping about staff policies and decisions. Those who did work hard, sat up ' til 3:00 and 4;00 in the mornings, trying to get every thing accomplished. Though putting out a good yearbook is an almost impossible and, certainly thankless job, the Golden Link staff tried to produce one of the best books ever. The people in charge of the effort were as follows: Editor — Kathy Sheppard, Assis. Ed. — Barbara Thorpe, Business Manager — Brenda Blackwell, Photographers — John Trowbridge, John Briggs, John Van Hoy, and Chuck Wallace. Staff editors were: People — Brenda Clark and Sheree Smith, Student Life — Susan Price, Organizations — Chuck Wallace, Athletics — Steve Nunn, Dividers — Loretta Nayes, Index — Melody Campbell. At the begin- ning of school, homerooms were approached for subscrip- tions. Staff members solicited more ads from businesses. Then everyone got down to the nitty-gritty of putting out a pape r once a month. There was the inevitable rush at the end of the week to get articles written and turned in, pictures taken, and copy typed. Then a small crew of members headed by editor John Trowbridge assembled at the Clarks- ville Times office to get some more work done. Wed. was designed as ad day when all the ads were thought up and done. Thurs. was called finish ads and where are all the articles so we can get them set? day. Fri. from 3:30 P.M. to 3:00 or 4:00 A.M., Sat. from 9:00 A.M. to 1 2:30 A. M., and Sun. from 3:00 P.M. to 1 2:00 P.M. were devoted to: writing editorials, rewriting articles, thinking up headlines and cap- tions, drawing cartoons, laying it all out, and mainly trying to stay awake. This last was achieved only by consuming untold numbers of Dr. Peppers and listening to a borrowed stereo at full-blast. After carrying the paper to Danville for printing on Mon. after missing the Sat. mailing deadline, it arrived safely at Bluestone the following Thurs. morning for distribution. For this reason, the Junior High band joined them for football games and parades. Inspired by a local newspaper editorial which referred to them as a band of roving gypsies , the band paraded onto the football field dressed as gypsies before the Homecoming game. They presented their pre-game show and returned at half-time in new uniforms. To raise money for these uniforms, the band operated a concession stand at home football games and sold patches. The band went to three parades which were held at South Boston, Chase City, and Clarksville. The majorettes received 3rd place at South Boston. The band captured 2nd place at Clarksville and Chase City. The band participated in the Veterans ' Day program, the Thanksgiving service, and the Christmas program. A small part of the band also played at pep rallies and at the Christ- mas dance. t Biology chapter begins; chemistry club continues The chemistry chapter of their science club began its second year with much enthusiasm. It took in new members who took chemistry and kept those who continued in physics. A biology chapter was also formed. From these two groups an inter-science club evolved. They joined the Virginia Junior Academy of Science. The club also sent fifteen members to the Math-Science Conference at St. Paul ' s College, Law- renceville, Virginia. No stranger in the crowd could doubt ' twas Casey at the bat. Strike one. the umpire said. From the benches dark with people there went up a ruffled roar. Like the beating of the stormwaves on a stern but distant shore. With a smile of Christian charity great Casey ' s visage shown; He stilled the rising tumult, he bade the game go on. He signalled to the pitcher and again the spheroid flew. But Casey still ignored it and the Umpire said Strike two. The sneer is gone from Casey ' s lip; his teeth are clenched with hate. He pounds the cruel violence his bat upon the plate; And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go. And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey ' s blow. Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright. The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light. And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout; But there is no joy in Mudville — mighty Casey has Struck Out. — Earneat L. During the mornings of a big game, their voices, blending in with many other Barons, could be heard in the gym and echoing through the halls. Thus began a day, at the end of which, there would be a confrontation of Baron ability with some other school that BHS students hoped would be less fortunate. On the morning of the anxiously awaited Home- coming game, the cheerleaders led an old-fashioned pep rally. The outcome was gratifying, in that many stu- dents got in the mood to go out that night and cheer the Barons on to a win. Although the Barons were unsuc- cessful, the spirit of the crowd was there and so were the cheerleaders. Even though the ground was wet and muddy, they managed to stay above the ground without sinking two or three feet. At basketball games, their voices, as well as the crowd ' s, seemed never to tire. The peak of school spirit and pep, as usual, was reached when Bluestone played Park View ' , our traditional rival. But another job for the cheerleaders came during the basketball tournament. And again, they succeeded in heightening support for the Barons. BHS students thank the cheerleaders and their spon- sors, Miss Bracey and Miss Meadows, this year, for a job well done. I 67 Cindermen walk off with winning season The Bluestone Baron Track team had a very out- standing 1972 season. In almost every track meet they walked off with at least five first places. The cindermen won over county rival, Park View, 62 2 3 to 44 1 3. The Barons couldn ' t be stopped, stomping Randolph-Henry, 89 to 20, picking up first places in every event. However, defeat came to them in the form of Matoaca— they lost 52 to 84, picking up four first places. The shadow of defeat still hung over them as they lost to Brunswick, 52 to 57, picking up only four first places. The District Meet did not hold any wins for the Barons. They came in third with a score of 47 but gained two first places for their effort. In the Regional Meet they were in fifth place. In the three wins they had scored a total of 28 runs. Then there came a hitting famine, and while the bats were silent, a five-game losing streak ruined their chances. The football team, however, played well despite what the scoreboard showed. They were a young team, with few experi- enced seniors. Also, it took a while for them and the 3rd coach in three years. Coach Brice, to adjust to each other. The Baron team lacked much school support. Few showed up for pep rallies, fewer participated at them, and even fewer people attended the games. However, the struggling team did their best for the sparse gath- erings of loyal fans, and for themselves. 75 Varsity Barons have BLUESTONE BARON BASKETBALL This season the Bluestone Baron basketball squad com- piled an overall record of 8-8 with one win and one loss in tournament competition. The team, which played very well was composed of sophomores. The team was led by Carnell Goode, Jerry Hillard, John Small, Victor Williams, and the guards, Mike Keene and Leroy Powell, Bench strength was important; in several games Howard Coles and Troy Bowers came off the bench to give the team that added momentum. Spectators turned out in hoards to see the boys play ball and they usually got their money ' s worth. There were several very close games in which the Barons came out on the short end of the score by only a few points. In these games the team seemed to be out-hustled in the closing minutes. This along with some obvious tensions seemed to hinder the team. Mr. Watson guided the team this season. This was his first try as varsity basketball coach. He replaced Mr. A. C. At first glance, the Bluestone Baron B” team ' s record 4-12 seems very unimpressive, but actually was much better than expected. Coach 0. B. Crowder with help from Coach A. C. Holloman formed a team out of second string junior high boys and some boys who had never played organized ball before. Alton Atkins and Kelly Puryear were the greatest assets to the team. Alton ' s corner shots and Kelly ' s rebounding and defense saves the team from being run off the court. William Newman, although low in scoring, was the ball handler and floor leader for the team. Roscoe Baptist, James Evans, and Kenneth Tucker also helped the team to a victory or a good loss. The others were not just benchwarmers but they were reserves to be used in time of need. Also they yelled and gave their team the best moral sup- port any team could have.
