The Greek Council of Bluefield State College is an organization established to govem and initiate policies concerning fratemities and sororit From the office of the Greek Council, decisions regarding pledging, hazing, membership drives and other policies are initiated. The Greek Council consists of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Patliamentarian and selected representatives of the fraternities sororities recognized on the campus. The Greek Council has and still serves as an organization of high esteem on the campus, promoting unity among the organizations, brotherh sisterhood, and high scholastic standards. In the past and during the 1975-76 academic year, the organization has engaged in projects that are of ben to the college, the community and mankind. Some of these projects are the United Way Campaign, Christmas Seal, Easter Seal, American Red Cr Blood Donations, and a food drive for needy families, given to the Salvation Army for distribution during the Christmas Season. The organization has initiated awareness programs designed to motivate fraternities and sororities, as well as to encourage students to becon actively involved in all aspects of college life, the Alumni Association, and the community in general. Not pictured: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded at Cornell University, December 4, 1906 by George B. Kelley, Vertner W. Tandy, Charles H. Chapman, Robert H. Ogle, Henry A. Callis, Eugene Kinckle jones, and Nathaniel A. Murray. It was born out of the establish- ment of a social study club with emphasis on education, social action, and social welfare among college men. The ideas and aims of Alpha Phi Alpha are best summed up in the words of the Alpha Hymn . . . Manly deeds, scholarship and love for all mankind. Over the 69 years since its conception, Alpha Phi Alpha has become interracial and there are now 382 College Chapters and 228 Alumni Chapters in 41 states, including the District of Columbia, West Indies, Europe, Africa, and the Virgin Islands. More than 40,000 men have been initiated into the fraternity. Beta Theta Chapter was established at Bluefield State Teacher's College on March 5, 1932, making it the first fraternal organization on the cam- pus. 557 N.
