Through her example of those qualities which mark a teacher as both an understanding and wise instructor of learning, and as a sincere and friendly counselor, Mrs. Louise Scott has won the respect and admiration of the student body and the faculty. Her genuine interest in the indi- vidual student and in her classes as a whole has been revealed in her unselfish gift of time and her enthusiasm for the advancement of education. As asenior class sponsor, a teacher of mathe- matics, and a loyal supporter of all athletic activities, Mrs. Scott has inspired all Beavers to seek the higher goals of learning and school spirit. For these reasons, the 1964 BEAVER is dedicated in deep appreciation to Mrs. Louise Scott. ff- gi V 1 .:,,,. rig . I 1 V ,F Y X . The goal of any yearbook staff is to produce apublication of lasting interest. To accomplish this purpose, we, the annual staff, have included in the 1964 BEAVER the people and places that have made this year so memorable. This book is ours, yet we cannot claim it, it is our gift to you, the students of Bluefield High School. Only in the mind and heart of the individual can it find its significance as a record of another exciting year at BHS. xi, f -Qi: in xg X J. Foremost among these are the teachers, each giving a part of himself that a student may learn. However, of equal necessity are those who devote themselves to the supervision and guidance of the student body, the care of the building, the preparation of nutritious lunches, and the or- ganization of the mountains of paper work Bluefield High School requires. A qi, W? Qfl ULU' Dear Students: My first word is one of appreciation for the fine young people who make up our student body. You are involved in a very important period in your own lives and one of deep interest to your parents and to your school. Aristotle once said: The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet. Aristotle was saying, real enjoyment will come from a job well done--a task pursued to completion. Be sure that you are a good school citizen, that you are courteous and considerate, both in and out of school. Carry with you the good name of the school and your actions will reflect credit on it. Take pride in your school and its achievements, be loyal to the school and its traditions. Then Bluefield High School will be a better place because you have attended it. ,I Sincerely yours, R. L. Arrington yo Leaders V '55 In the shortyear that Mr. George Erps has been assistant principal at Bluefield High School, he has shown his readiness to serve the individual student as well as the school. Through his diligentsupervision, he has earned the respect of students and teachers alike. They regard him as a counselor and a disciplinarian, but above all--- a friend. Not by years but by disposition is wisdom acquired 1 I 1 'I L .Pl H 'jr 1 qi I 'F 1 6 . 7 31 , J, 5 ,1-ff. fs ' NHJ .. His newly initiated ideas are the future of BHS, and because of the en- thusiasm with which he enacts them, they will become an in- tegral part of our school policy. We, the students of Blue- field High School, can never begin to thank him for his end- less effort and unparalleled example. 11 After the verb 'to 1ove,' 'to help' is the most beautiful verb in the world. Baroness Bertha von Suttner During our three shortyears at B1uefieldHigh School, we, as students face many momentous decisions that will determine the course of our later lives. To direct us in these choices-- especially those of future education and career--and to guide us in the formation of our personal ideals are the services of Miss Louise Light, our guidance counselor. Through her warm sin- cerity and understanding, each of us may receive extra motivation for success. Her devotion and responsibility prove Miss Light to be one of the best-liked and most valuable members of our administrative staff. F riendshzp In our world among the mountains, we have found many opportunities for enrich- ment. Experiences of scholastic achievement and extracurricular activities have de- veloped in us a greater appreciation of the fullness of life. But our lives acquire signifi- cance not only in learning but also in personal relationships. Sir William Osler once said, . . . the most essential thing for happiness is the gift of friendship. In this sec- tion, each of us can find those special people who have added sparkle to our days at B. H. S. In later years, these friends will still be here, no matter how far away the paths of time have taken them. Let us count among our greatest treasures those friendships we have found here. , i, . We, as seniors, are approaching the gateway to the future with mixed emotions--enthusiasm, pride, and even fear. As we pass through this golden door to the achievements that await us, we shall carry with us the influence of Bluefield High School and our memories of it. Only seniors can know the tension and excitement of the election of class officers, home-coming, the prom, the senior class skit and play, and commencement. We are now at a beginning and an end, ahead lies a rich, full world, yet we leave behind an equally rich one. 22 Q v n, 3- hr... ' 4. ' 4 ' Ax A ' X am., Q, ls. Q?-r 1 . IU! The rung of aladder was never meant to rest upon, but only to hold aman's foot long enough to enable him to put the other somewhat higher. Alduous Leonard Huxley We, as juniors, have reached the middle of the ladder--the halfway mark in our high school careers. Left behind us are the novelty and confusion of our sophomore year, lying ahead is the great expectation of our senior year. Not only have we sought to broaden our horizons through education, but also to gain maturity and responsibility through participation in school activities. With profound regrets, we depart from the joys of our junior year. 42 The Class of 1965 Sharon Acord Mary Adams Dolly Adkins Tommy Adkins Linda Akers N Ci an X'XX Jennifer Alexander L' Q9 5, Delayne Andrews Barbara Arnold Eddie Atwell Marchia Austin Barbara Bailey Linda Bailey Robert Bailey John Baker Larry Baldwin Louise Baldwin Pat Baldwin Carolyn Barnett Georgia Barnett Randy Barnett Howard Beckett Danny Belcher Dennis Belcher Brenda Bell Carolyn Bell David F Bell David H Bell 4. lf? - 1 K' n r Y -5. When highest peaks are gilt and rose day has begun. Mary Hunter Austin We, as sophomores, at the foot of the high school stairs, have just begun anew phase of our education. Although we cannot as yet reach the heights reserved for juniors and seniors, our first year as high school students has given us expanding interests and re- sponsibilities, which we have readily accepted. We have climbed the step of scholarship, for countless sophomore names are printed on every honor roll. We have climbed the step of school spirit, for we cheer enthusiastically at pep assemblies and games. We have climbed the steps of responsibility and leadership, for we have become members of student clubs and activities. Now, a year of golden experiences has made us confident that our steps will lead us to the pinnacles of success. With youthful exuberance, we are reaching out to embrace the Whole world--its wonders, its joys, and its challenges. We look not back, but move with eagerness toward the goal of maturity. 52 l P' 'WW 5' 'ii Q IM7 W , ! Individual interests are encouraged and respected by students and faculty alike. For those who wish to serve the community, there are the Key Club, the Keyettes, and the City Youth Council. Interested in languages? The French Club and the Latin Club are active in studying and enjoying languages. The Hi-Y Club and the Y-Teens participate in many projects and social activities throughout the' year. For those planning a career, the Future Teachers of America and the Health Careers Organization open opportunities for study in the fields of teaching and medicine. Dramatics and speech are among the most popular activities at BHS. National Thespians and National Forensic encourage activities in those fields. The Library Assistants and the Stage Crew are concerned with the maintenance and appreciation of the library and the auditorium. The formation of Christian ideals and practices among all students is the goal of the Bible Club. Active in music are the Choir, Concert Choir, Band and Stage Band, who, at various times, present programs to the student body and community organi- zations. Finally, there is our body of government, the Student Council, which strives to represent the students in matters of school policy. All these groups are unique in their functions and activities, yet they have one common factor--they are composed of the stu- dents of BHS, who are working and hoping for a bright today and a brighter tomorrow. ,fwdwf M ,W ff' M 'K vw , My 1 vi WWW W , lgfmw Sm i n ME: . Sponsored by Mrs. Foglesong, its main purpose is to teach interested people the proper use of the library. With the help of Mrs. Foglesong, the group works to promote aliterary interest in all pupils and, at the same time, take care of the running of the library. It is hoped that all students will take an active interest in the library and its many functions. Stage Crew Tommy Cooper, Russell Taylor, and Jerry Thompson. The Stage Crew is an organization of several boys who voluntarily wish to help with lights, sound, props, costumes, make-up, maintenance of the stage, equipment, and the audi- torium. Until the past few years, the Stage Crew was under the direction of Miss Ruth Bartlett. However, Mr. Arrington and Mr. Stuart White now supervise it. Boys who are interested apply and are chosen by the head of the crew with Mr. Arrington's approval. Many hours are spent on each show both during and after school. Some of the shows that the Stage Crew work with annually are the Community Concerts, One Act Plays, Senior Class Play, Graduation, Baccalaureate, and the Mercer County Beauty Pageant. Achievement G-reat achievements raise a monument which shall endure until the sun grows cold. Georgius Fabricius To achieve is to know the glow of a job well done. To achieve is to humble oneself in order to make others proud. To achieve is to work tirelessly and taste the bitter fruit of disappointment as well as the sweet nectar of success. Achievement is all this and more. Achievement changes our high school from masses of indiscernible students into a living unit of varied interests and talents. Achievement shines only in the light of an uenthusiastic, genyerous attitude. Mere activity must not be mistaken for true achieve- ment, but useful activity must not be shunned because it may go unnoticed or unrewarded. For that reason, Beaver students achieve not only as a group but also as individuals, as honors are bestowed on outstanding students, such as sophomores of the year, Second Milers, and National Honor Society. For, in the end, the highest achievement is the for- mation of a mature, responsible character. ififgqf' L 'v1- El Y Homecoming Queen it k I i E Miss Carole Smith m U A-, 5 v- ff Q i- X- 1 I - E' , F R Y In ,VN 1 'A V Q 'gg !,,,N D. al' V, fl. Matthew 5:41 King James Version, Holy Bible To accomplish a given task well is the mark of a devoted and responsible student, one who demonstrates averynoteworthy quality and on whom others may depend. There are those, how- ever, who exemplify even greater values of steadfastness, those outstanding students who are not content with the required duties of school life, but who strive to proportion quality with quantity beyond the accepted limits of achievement, those who, given five talents, produce ten. These students, being unsatisfiedwith mediocrity or commonplace accomplishments in school endeavors rise above average expectations and goals and for their repeated efforts they have been recog- nized as Second Milers. 109 Sorry, Wrong Number J.
