In these times of turmoil and trouble, times in which men seek only the gains that life can afford themselves, it is fitting and just that we stop and take bearings. lt is the purpose of any college to educate its stu-' , dents and faculty in the arts, sciences, and humanities. However, as insurrection and civil disobedience sweep our campuses and colleges, shaking the very founda- tions of education, it is time to think seriously about the social and spiritual obligations of an institution of higher education. A college not only educates its stu- dents in the areas which will eventually become their ,,dd, livelihoods, the college also molds the social behaviu of its students. Education cannot be confined to books alone. The adjustment and conduct of an individual is directly proportional to the education the person has attained. A well-rounded person, easily at home in all social climates, is a good indication of a well-educated person. In like manner, a person's spiritual develope ment is characterized by his education. The truly re- ligious person, happy and at peace, indicates a person who has found the way to co-ordinate his life, and its goals, with his education. He has found the key to Cod through learning of Cod and studying the won- ders created by his hand. lt is easily seen, therefore, that education is 'inextricably entwined with social happiness and religious fulfillment. Bluefield College, primarily a Baptist institution, has been serving the southwestern Virginia population srs. faithfully for many years. Though Baptist in affiliation, it has been the policy of our school to accept all aspiring young students, regardless of creed. On our campus can be found students of all denominations. On our campus also, can be found true Christian fel- lowship and love, a kind only created through mutual ' understanding and goodwill. Within the halls of Blue- field College religion becomes not individual groups of sects, but a living and breathing unity with a per- sonality as fresh, vibrant, and living as the trees which grace our mountains. lt is the sincere hope of this annual staff, that this atmosphere continues to grow and expand. We feel that Bluefield College can be, and is becoming, a better place to live, work, study, 3'l'7Cl'f learn. As long as our faculty and students realize the' ' obligations they have to one another, Bluefield College will continue to serve Cod, church, and country in the high ideals for which she has always stood. 2
