The fun we had, the things we did, our work and playānever ceasing from the Slop-Shop to the Ad Building! Putting these small but happy moments together has given us our annual year-book, portraying another year at Bluefield College. We hope we have been successful in our purpose and have interpreted our year in such a way that in years to come we shall be able to look at our Annual and remember this as one of the most glorious and exciting, as well as one of the happiest, years of our lives. And now we dedicate this work to our class-mates who have felt already that their duty lies with the armed forces of this great nation. Not only to those who have already gone, but also to the other cour¬ ageous, high-spirited members of our stu¬ dent body who, ere-long, will follow in their footstepsāwe dedicate this, the 1942 Rambler. You to the left and I to the right, For the ways of men must severā And it well may be for a day and a night, And it well may be forever. But whether we meet or whether we part (For our ways are past our knowing), A pledge from the heart to its fellow heart Here ' s luck! For we know not where we are going. ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS Edwin C. Wade, A.B., M.A. Hampden-Sydney College; Columbia University President Elijah M. Louthan, B.A., M.A., Th.M. University of Richmond; Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Treasurer; Registrar; Professor of Mathematics Claude W. Owen, B.A., M.A. University of Richmond; Columbia University Dean; Professor of Education, Social Science Upon entering Bluefield College, students meet first these three officers of the school. The acquaint¬ ances thus made soon ripen into delightful friendships which last throughout the years. ⦠FACULTY These members of our faculty, by their unceasing endeavor to be help¬ ful, have become the friends, as well as the advisers, of each student at Bluefield College. It is through their sincere and sympathetic understand¬ ing that the student body has been inspired to accomplish greater things at all times. We rather envy those we leave behind because of the happi¬ ness that lies ahead for them: hours in the Slop-Shop , dances in the dining hall, football and basket-ball games, May Day, the happiness we once shared! The thought of leav¬ ing our beautiful campus, our sus¬ taining faculty and our Freshman friends makes us rather misty-eyed. As much as we would like to remain, however, we must go on in order to make room for those who will follow. Some of us will find positions in this war-torn nation, while others will en¬ ter institutions of higher learning. Whatever our destinies, we shall al¬ ways carry with us the memory of our two happy and glorious years Bluefield College. No longer were we dignified Seniors; we were only lowly Freshmen. At first, we were decidedly frightened and very much unaccustomed to the ways of college life, but we soon found that the Sophomores weren ' t so awe-inspir¬ ing as they had appeared to be and that they were glad to lend a hand in helping us to get started on our college careers. After becoming ac¬ customed to the change and after those few hectic weeks of initiations were over, we really began to love our school and we settled down to nine months of work and play. Our Freshman year has been a wonder¬ ful experience, one that we shall never forget, and we are looking for¬ ward to next year when we shall be the Sophomore Class of forty-three. We are proud to say that this is the first time in recent years that Bluefield College has had such a pa¬ per. Last year and the first semester of this year the Collegian was printed every Fri¬ day in the Sunset News by the members of the Journalism class. This semester the class, aided by several other students who are interested in Journalism, has undertaken to edit a solely independent school paper. Under the capable direction of Mr. Sydnor Barks¬ dale, editor of the Sunset News and professor of Journalism at Bluefield College, the Collegian has experienced one of its most successful years. Stuart, son of Dr. and Mrs. R. R. Stuart of College Avenue; Victor Crockett of Tazewell, Virginia; Dennis Boone of Jenkinsjones, W. Va.; and Robert Rounsley of Johnstown, Penn. The frater¬ nity pursued a very conservative policy of growth during its first year by virtue cf the fact that the four founders admitted to membership only eight additional students during that session. During the Spring of 1935, Professor W. I. Marable, Judge D. M. Easley, and Mr. Frank S. Easley were made hon¬ orary members of the fraternity. Most of the members of Kappa Omicron Alpha have been boys from the old pioneer families of this section. The organi¬ zation enjoys a good reputation in the city and its members have always taken an active part in student activities. Among the alumni are successful business and professional men who still take a genuine interest in the welfare of Bluefield College and Kappa Omicron Alpha. Page 45 S s+Al t 2. Also, it never ceases to infuse and encourage a zeal for higher scholastic standards amid its membership. Perhaps the finest element of this fraternity is its firmness of organization. Each Eta Tau Beta member assumes a close brotherly attitude toward the other. At the same time each is careful to win and cultivate the friendship of his associates outside this fraternity. T. Howard brought their season to a close with a triumph over Rio Grande. Looking back over the season ' s record we find that the Rambling Reds have won four games and lost four, a fair record considering the fact that many of their opponents were from four-year schools. In their first encounter of the season ,on September 20, the Rambling Reds went down to defeat before a strong Milligan team by the score of 21-0. Both teams were evenly matched but the breaks decided the outcome. The Reds ' line was outstanding throughout the entire game. The strong Marshall Frosh team met the Rambling Reds the following week, the game being played at Blue- field. Both teams played exceptionally well and kept battering each other up and down the field. In the second quarter, the Marshall Frosh backfield ace, Chapman, carried the ball over for the only score of the game, giving the Huntington boys a 7-0 win over the Reds. On October 11, the team journeyed to Rio Grande, Ohio, where they met and defeated a stubborn and fighting Rio Grande eleven, by a 25-7 score. The following week the Lotito-men lost a heartbreaking game to West Virginia Tech. Although the Rambling Reds outplayed their rivals, rolling up 14 first downs to 2, they lost by a margin of 10-0. The Techmen managed to score in the last two minutes of the game. After suffering three defeats out of their first four games of the season, the Reds came back in great form the following week-end to hand the Hiwassee eleven a 28-0 lacing. Ed Barrier and Frank Lotito starred for the Rambling Reds. Lotito scored on a long run through the entire Hiwassee team. On November 1, the boys met V. P. I. Frosh at Blacksburg and suffered their worst defeat of the season, losing by a score of 30-0. Tennessee-Wesleyan became victim number three for the Reds. In a hard-fought game the Bluefield eleven scored twice to knock off the Wesleyan boys 14-0. In their annual homecoming game on Thanksgiving Day, the Lotito-men met Rio Grande and trounced their op¬ ponents 30-7. This was victory number four for the Reds who ended the season with a .500 average. First Row: Frederick, Bogdan, Lotito, Collins, Machita, Dylong, Schulz.
