Delta Beta Kappa, the first social organization of its kind on the Bluefield College Campus, came into being on October 1, 1934. Under the able guidance of Mrs. Greever, sponsor, and W. 1. Marable, adviser, as well as the leadership of the girls who have served as presidents of the Sorority during the years fol- lowing, Delta Beta Kappa has become one of the foremost social and scholastic organizations of Bluefield College. A record of which the group is most proud is the attainment of high honors in the scholastic field. Delta Beta Kappa has won the sorority scholarship cup fcr the past two consecutive years and seeks to attain this goal again in '41, with an even higher record. As for social activities, the sorority has a very special part in this phase of college life. Throughout the year the DBK girls are active in the social do- ings of the campus. Not to be forgotten are the many bowling parties, pro- gressive dinners, theater parties, and of course the slumber parties which proved such eventful and happy occasions for each oi us. Va.: Mrs. Margaret Kerfoot Snyder, Fairmont, W. Va., and Miss Shirley Anne Peters, Bluefield, W. Va. I During the six years of organization the Sigma Theta sorority has been one of the most active and outstanding college organizations. The sorority spon- sors the annual Valentine Dance of the college and also entertains the Student body annually with a party. The Sigma Theta sorority is the only one to give an annual Spring Formal at the Bluefield Country Club. An annual Christmas Tea is given in honor of all girls who have been a member of the sorority. The sorority has always been composed of girls with leadership and scho- larship. These girls strive for the high ideals and success in life. With the help of many of the alumni members, the Sigma Theta sorority during the 1940- 41 school term has kept the sorority name glowing with bright flames that will never die. Stuart, son of Dr. and Mrs. R. R. Stuart of College Avenue: Victor Crockett of Tazewell, Virginia: Dennis Boone of len- kinsjones, West Virginia and Robert Rounsley of Iohnstown, Penn. The fra- ternity pursued a very conservative policy of growth during its first year by virtue of the fact that the four founders admitted to membership only eight ad- ditional students during that Session. During the Spring of 1935, Professor William Irvine Marable, Iudge D. M. Easley, and Mr. Frank S. Easley were made honorary members of the fraternity. Most of the members of Kappa Omicron Alpha have boys from the old pioneer families of this Section. The organization enjoys a good reputation in the city and its members have always taken an active part in student activities. The Reds roared into action in the first game of the season, September 30, to trim the V. P. I. Iunior varsity 13-12. Both teams played hard, fast ball. This was the hardest fought game of the season for the Reds. Four days after their hardest game of the season the home team took to the road to meet the strongest freshman team that Marshall College had produced in several years. The Reds went down in defeat by a score of 30-6. Morris-Harvey's-powerhouse rolled into town, October 12, to put the skids under the Blue- field team and return home with the big end of a 27-6 score. Frankie Lotito, early in first quarter, made the lone tally for the Reds. The Reds rambled the following week and took the New River boys over the jumps and walked away with a 12-7 victory. The Bluefield boys scored the winning touchdown in the last few minutes of a thrilling last quarter. Sarver and Fisher saved the day for the Reds. The Beds stayed in form on the twenty-sixth to wallop the highly rated Hiwassee team 39-13. Sarver, Fisher, Lotito, Martin and Company, ran wild. In the roughest game of the season the Reds fell before the Tennessee-Wesleyans, Nov- vember 2, by a score of 40-6. Bluefield's next victim was the William ci Mary extension team from Norfolk, Virginia. Along with the 25-0 victory several freshmen showed talent which will no doubt put them in plenty of service next fall. They were Colling, Roberts, Big lohn Machita, Moore and Townsley. Milligan, the Smoky Mountain Champions, came to town on Turkey Day to close the gridiron season. With the score tied in the second quarter Sarver broke away for a 60-yard touchdown run only to have it called back because of an alleged clipping penalty. Motion pictures of the game later proved the Bluefield man had not used an illegal block but the Reds had lost heart and Milligan went on to take a 47-21 victory. TRACK Led by Captain Bud Douglas, the l94l track-men experienced the best season in the history of the school. Captain Douglas is recognized as the best hurdle man in this section of the country and tar above the average in the 220 yard dash. Douglas can always be depended upon for three firsts. lohn Rowe, brilliant sophomore miler who combined with Doc Riley in the '40 season to take first and second place in every meet, was another reason why Bluefield was on the top of the pile after every meet. Place horse Rowe branched out this season and made a name for himself in the half and two mile run. Among others that helped the Beds were Bill Shellenberger, ace half miler, and also gave a good account of himself in the broad and high jumps, Tom Brown, speedy 100, 220 and 440 dash man, game little Carl Devorshak and Kuscko, the two mile men. Bluefield opened the season with a brilliant Victory over Lynchburg College by a lopsided score. Their next victim was Emory 61 Henry whom they ole- feated twice. Cn through the schedule rolled the Beds, through to their first undefeated season. A football injury deprived the squad of their 1940 star field man, Ioe Mini- chello and graduation took such outstanding men as lack Dudley, Doc Riley, Iody Fisher and Mat Nathan.
