CALDWELL-Co-Manager lNot in Picturel Fighting with grim vigor through rain and snow, mud and ice, these boys, led by Couch Mullie LeNoir, challenged their opponents to Q fierce battle for firs honors of the football season, cmd won new honors for our Rambling Reds. t 156 FOOTBALL-THE YEAR After three months of strenuous campaigning on the gridiron, the Bluefield College football team brought their not too impressive season to a close with a loss to our traditional rival, Concord, on Thanksgiving day. Reviewing the Ram- bling Red record, we find that they won four games while losing five to their opponents. This is not so bad, considering that Bluefield is a junior college and most of our rivals were four-year schools. Facing such a foe as Tennessee-Wesleyan in the opening game proved too much of a job for Coach Lenoir's pigskin warriors land they were overwhelmed by a score of 31-0. ln the season's second encouter, Bluefield entered the win column with a 7-2 victory over the Emory and Henry freshmen. McGhee was tackled behind the goal for Emory's two points. Before the score was placed on the board, however, Bluefield had started a march down the field which ended with Howard going over for the touchdown. Blaylock kicked the extra point. The third game of the season was played at Louisburg in North Carolinagand the Reds made it two straight by handing the Carolinians a 20-7 licking. Co- captain Howard continued his good work by going over for two touchdowns. McGhee, slippery halfback, scored the other six points, while Blaylock place- kicked two out of the three extra points. . The Iunior Varsity played the fourth game on the schedule, defeating Prince- ton High School by a 12-0 score. The game was a scoreless tie up to the last period, but then Coach Bradshaw's charges rushed over two touchdowns, one by Stephen, the other by French, to put the contest on ice. Traveling to the Naval Training Base in Norfork for their next game, the Reds found the sailors had too much on the ball for them and were beaten, 32-14. Touchdowns were made by McGhee, midget back, and Ierry Pendry, end. Bluefield resumed their winning ways, however, against Morris-Harvey, conquering the Charleston boys by the close score of 6-O. Vickers, a transfer from Graham High School, scored the only touchdown of the game from the ten- yard line on a fake pass. The Iunior Varsity journeyed to Princeton for the HGXTI'-QQHIG, going clown to defeat by a 19-12 score. Vickers made the first touchdown of the game after a long march down the field. Sib Evans, quarter-back for the layvees, made the longest run of the season for the second touchdown. He took the second half kick-off and streaked down the field eighty yards for the six points. Princeton then jumped to life and scored three touchdowns in straight order to win. The Ramblin' Reds found their rivals from across the county too much for them in the final game of the season. The Concord Mountain Lions gained a 28-6 triumph over our boys. Concord entered the game with the reputation of having one of the best teams in the state, and they lived up to their advance notice. Bluefield's lone marker was made when Evans buckecl across from the three-yard line late in the game. Bob Sheffield led his brilliant team to a glorious whirl- wind Victory in almost every game, showering tributes upon the most Outstanding basket-ball five in the recent history of Bluefield College athletics. In each game, several boys were outstanding, but it was only the splendid cooperation of the entire team that forwarded them on to the success which they so richly deserved. 1 i BASKET-BALL Bluefield College enjoyed one of its most successful basket-ball seasons in the annals of the school in '37, Although four of its best '36 Varsity, including Stude- baker and Fortune, were lost by graduation, Coach LeNoir built a team which by the middle of the season had succeeded in winning ten out of eleven games. The members of the team were Sheffield, who jumped centerg Douthat and Cruise, forwards, and Stephen and French, at the guard positions. Some of the other boys who made up the squad were: Woolwine, Bennett, Midkiff, and Clat- terbaugh. During the season Bluefield succeeded in scoring two hundred more points than their opponents. Bob Sheffield led the individual scorers with 231 points, tied by Skeeter Douthat with 231 points. Bluefield opened its season by defeating Morris-Harvey, 45-43, at the college gym. Douthat, playing his first game led the Reds with 23 points to a victory over the veteran Morris-Harvey. Lynchburg College of Virginia was next, falling before Capt. Sheffield and his mates, 43-32. The inexperienced Bluefield five showed much improvement over their effort in the Morris-Harvey conflict. The team showed signs of the greatness which they were taprove in later games. A semi-professional team from Pulaski was next, overwhelmed by a score of 61-27. The college cagesters were led by Sheffield with 16 points. The pros were snowed under in a shower of Red baskets. Next in line to fall before the Raging Reds were the Tazewell Independents who Went home on the short end of a 56-15 score, By this time it had begun to look like the Coach had been able to fill the shoes of the players who had graduated in Iune. Bluefield defeated National Business College of Roanoke, 43-40. N. B. C. came to Bluefield recognized as the outstanding five in the state of Virginia and led by Capt. Price who was chosen as All-American guard in '36. Alderson-Broaddus, West Virginia state champs in '36, and the best collegiate five to appear on the hardwoods in the gym during the '37 season were con- quered next by a score of 53-48. The members of the team were hitting on all four and from this point, things looked well for a very successful season. Against Alderson-Broaddus, Sheffield played his best game. ln the next game, Bluefield College defeated a team representing Potomac State for the first time in the history of the school. The l..eNoir coached team subdued the State boys, 53-48. The college winning streak was now seven straight. Then came the straw that broke the camel's back. Concord, our traditional rival, runner-up in the state tournament in '36 and with practically the same team back, knocked the skids sky high from under the Ramblin' Reds winning streak. With high scoring, the Mountain Lions clawed and scratched their Way to a 36-33 victory. Although the Bluefield College boys went down into defeat with their winning streak broken, they all covered themselves with glory against a team that was heated with fire. This was especially true of French and Stephen, probably the two best guards to ever appear in college uniform. l E . .-al TENNIS SQUAD MERRILL STEWART .....N... 4 ........................Y..
