BSJH freshmen ran with their own team as well as with the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams of the high school. Practice began for the Cross Country runners last summer. They ran 5 - 8 miles a day, no matter how high the temperature rose. ln August, training picked up to 10 miles per day as the opening of the season drew near. When school began many runners worked out in the morning before classes in addition to the 8-10 mile afternoon practice. Those participating from the Junior High were: C. J. Moeller, Doug Kingsley, Billy McCracken, John Weston, and David Porter. Doug Kingsley was one of the individuals that made winning the state meet a reality, said Coach Darling. Doug finished 20th at the state Cross Country Championships which is an accomplishment for a freshman. He also made the All-District and All-Regional Cross-Country teams.

Cross Country David Porter cut almost 9 minutes off his six mile time during the season and thus became the most improved runner on the team. He should be a leader at the Junior Varsity level in 1981 and may challenge for one of the Varsity spots. C. J. Moeller ran second man on the Junior Varsity team and will be on next year's team as they will be defending their state championship title. Coach Darling said the C. J., ran very well as a freshman. One of the runners hampered by many injuries throughout the season was Bill McCracken. Bill should, however, help out on the Junior Varsity in 1981. Coach Vernon Darling, who is an outstanding runner himself shares a relaxing moment with members of his cross country team. Coach Darling was an All-American in cross country and steeplechase at Northwest Missouri State University during his college years. -1 ',w,.,, mg. , Y V. . ' 'ry' I-Lf. ...-.: . . . -.-- H - . .
