The wrestlers practiced at the high school daily during the season and competed with the high school team. Even though they competed against other freshmen from area schools, competition was tough. Many opponents had wrestled in YMCA programs for five or six years. Several boys on the team were stand-outs. In particular they were, Ben Becker, Dan Whitney, Mike Nelson, Tim Cox, Doug Gossett, Neidig. Coach Fritchie said that, Overall, this group of ninth graders is the best group of wrestlers that we have ever had in one class. The wrestlers participated in three tournaments. They placed second in the St. Joseph Central Frosh Tournament, third at the Winnetonka Frosh Tour- nament, and second at the Bethany Junior Varsity Tournament. These boys should provide top calibre wrestling at Blue Springs for years to come. BSJH freshmen ran with their own team as well as with the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams of the high school. Practice began for the Cross Country runners last summer. They ran 5 - 8 miles a day, no matter how high the temperature rose. ln August, training picked up to 10 miles per day as the opening of the season drew near. When school began many runners worked out in the morning before classes in addition to the 8-10 mile afternoon practice. Those participating from the Junior High were: C. J. Moeller, Doug Kingsley, Billy McCracken, John Weston, and David Porter. Doug Kingsley was one of the individuals that made winning the state meet a reality, said Coach Darling. Doug finished 20th at the state Cross Country Championships which is an accomplishment for a freshman. He also made the All-District and All-Regional Cross-Country teams.
