Spanish is available to 9th graders, and French can be taken by those in both grade levels. Students in Spanish I classes learn to listen, speak, read, and write in simple Spanish. A vocabulary of about 500 words is known at the end of the year. Customs and 'culture of Spanish speaking people is also studied. French I is an introduction to this language. Along with study of the basic skills, students are introduced to French art, music, foods, and civilization. A continuation of this basic knowledge is given in French ll. Communications Mrs. Fran Keal Mr. Brad Mayfield Creative Drama Communications I 81 ll UMKC, B.S., M.A. CMSU, B.S. Both the communications and creative drama classes provide students with experiences in talking with and in front of groups of people. Both courses utilize many group activities which enhance commun- ication skills. Communications classes are concerned with parliamentary procedure, public speaking, debate, drama, and oral interpretation. Also included are some play productions and experience with a speech tournament. The creative drama classes learn verbal and non-verbal communication skills. This is an activity oriented course which usually produces a group of short plays by the end of the semester.

The main purpose of social studies classes is to give students a better appreciation of their heritage and a clearer understanding of some of the things which have shaped America. The 8th grade classes begin with the discovery and exploration of America and continue through the Civil War. Emphasis is placed on important periods in the development of the country. The 9th graders enter a more in-depth study of the United States from 1865 to the present. Students have the opportunity to discuss problems of the world today, the role of the United States and to keep abreast of current events.
