At the eighth grade level there is an emphasis on grammar as well as development of sentences and paragraphs. Mr. Dan McLaughlin BASIC CMSU, B.S. Mr.Frank Sachs Counselor Missouri Univ., B.S.Ed. CMSU, M.S.Ed. Professional educators with specialized training in guidance function as the counselors at BSJH, Their main concern is the handling of the needs and problems of the junior high school student. They provide much needed T.L.C. Their tasks not only bring them in contact with students, but also parents, teachers, and the administrative staff. An in-school suspension program was pioneered at BSJH. Students who normally would have been suspended are kept within the school premises and are given regular class assignments from their academic teachers. Besides having time to do their regular class work, they complete personal evaluations for BASIC and benefit from group counseling sessions.

Communications Mrs. Fran Keal Mr. Brad Mayfield Creative Drama Communications I 81 ll UMKC, B.S., M.A. CMSU, B.S. Both the communications and creative drama classes provide students with experiences in talking with and in front of groups of people. Both courses utilize many group activities which enhance commun- ication skills. Communications classes are concerned with parliamentary procedure, public speaking, debate, drama, and oral interpretation. Also included are some play productions and experience with a speech tournament. The creative drama classes learn verbal and non-verbal communication skills. This is an activity oriented course which usually produces a group of short plays by the end of the semester.
