Although it happened last year, the fire has had a huge effect on all students, staff, and administrators this year. lt has caused us to function with shuttle buses, sack lunches, and outdoor volleyball practice. But it has also given us the opportunity to play games in the high school field house, to have better facilities in the west wing, and to show the community the school district, and ourselves that nothing can keep us down. No matter how devastating the fire was to our building, the BSJH students and staff will keep moving right along. Before the fire and after the fire are time references that will be used for years to come but the students and staff of 1980-81 are the ones who will remember all the challenging events they experienced. Student Life Hi! How's it going? Great!'i Hey! Did you hear about . . . ? . Does this sound familiar? It is a typical conversation heard by the Wildcats of BSJH. Buses unload, lockers clatter, classes change. To any outsider this would be considered total chaos, but to the students it's life. Students are what the school is all about. They are also what a yearbook is all about. This section follows the life of BSJH'ers from 7:30 am 'til activities end and it's time to go home. A busy student's life is always moving right along. iw' W fi A Day In The Life Of A Wildcat ,LW Wildcats Sell Subscriptions Successfully NR This year it was done! The Wildcats raised more money during the magazine sales drive than ever before. Last year's record was broken. Over 317,000 was collected. Prizes were given to the top three winning classes. The class which raised the most money received a pizza party. The second place class won a peppermint spirit stick for each student in the class. Everyone in the third place class shared a 10 pound Hershey Bar! All students who helped in the annual magazine drive by selling subscriptions in the community were rewarded. Some of the special prizes were posters, candy bars, spirit towels, stuffed animals, and Frisbees. Wildcats moved themselves right into a successful sales campaign. 9, :CDT , Q , l :Mg--Xl? Some won money in a drawing, while others received prizes in the candy bars that they had won for selling magazine subscriptions. Still others were rewarded for their outstanding efforts in this school endeavor. ,fIQ. , ,ff ,, 2 ,ff , . 0 ll W if 4, ,Q fir, ,, 'ft ff fy, K bk L lx. Gur United Efforts Help United Way Each year students have an opportunity to contribute to the United Way campaign. lt is always a goal to top last year's total money collected. B.S.J.H.'ers were able to raise S700 in the 1980 effort. This, of course, beat the past record. For each 250: donated, the doner was entitled to guess how many pieces of gum were in the big bubble gum jar located in the library. The students who guessed closest to the actual number of pieces of gum were Doug Bliss, Tim Lemport, Myke Jones, Julie Purtyman, and Chris Lucas. The classes which contributed the most amount of money were those of Mr. Settles and Mrs. Cesaretti. These two classes were treated to a taco party at Patricio's during 3rd and 4th hour. 14 ,fa f ' A ' ff 'TLJN' T T ri fl fb KA 'T K- 1 X fl , , 9 -.K fv V ' ' l . , 1 - V . This effort was to assist families in the local community. The, goods donated were collected by the Coordinating Council of Social Services of Blue Springs which also had the responsibility to distributing them. The drive was sponsored by the Student Council. Two classes were winners at bringing in their canned foods. They each got a doughnut party. They were the first hour classes of Coach Fritchie and Coach Moran. 17: Y .iv T ix ll il' -T l ' f V ll I gl fb 'T fl A ' ff s l- uf' ' l f fi f dmabuf lu.,2.u.1g.+2+, la 'li RPQKS Spirit Week at BSJH was bigger and better than ever this year. Sponsored by the Student Council, Spirit Week began with Depression Day. Spirited Wildcats dragged out any old costume they could find from the 1930's. A favorite for everyone was Emergency Day, when students and staff alike faked an ouchie. The rest of the week, enthusiasm was demonstrated with Yesterdays, any fashion period from the last century, Crazy Day, wild socks, hair, and sunglassesg and Wildcat Day, a chance to wear purple and gold, carry Wildcat Banners, and show pride in our school. Spirit Week is enough to keep any Wildcat Moving Right Along. ABOVE - The home room winners were just a sampling of the students who took part in the last day of Spirit Week on Wildcat Day. RIGHT - Yesterdays winners, Kevin Stone, Leanora Brancato, Joelle Purvis, and Doug Gossett show typlcal Wildcat ingenuity. NEXT PAGE TOP LEFT - Brian Wroten, Kris Kelly, Traci Pulliam, and Diane Wilcox were almost broken beyond repair. TOP RIGHT - Not to be out-done, the Crazy Day winners, Ray Cotrel, Kim Corley, Jon Keck, and Lisa Curtis show just how wild Wildcats can be. There he won first and received an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. At the national spelling bee, Tim placed fifth. Greg Osborne's talent is of a musical nature. Greg has composed two songs which have won him honors. They both received first place awards at the annual Missouri PTSA cultural arts contest. One of these compositions he completed while in 7th grade and one while he was in 8th grade. His latest effort won him a second place at the contest on a national level. The home room representatives have had the responsibilities of getting home rooms organized for the magazine drive, urging classmates contribution to the United Way, and seeing to it that canned goods were collected for that annual project. These representatives are elected in the fall from each first hour class. The members-at-large attended regular student council meetings and helped in decision making of the council. Members-at-large head committees, help at dances, and handle other responsibilities. These people are elected by the student body in the spring. Each grade level has five members-at-large. They are here for such a short part of their lives, and yet it is hoped that as they grow and mature, they have learned many valuable lessons. The hope of preparing students for an uncertain future is the only treason for a Blue Springs Junior High. The classes of 1984 and 1985 are definitely moving right along , and as Wildcats before them, they will someday bring pride to our school through extraordinary accomplish- ments. 'qi l B B . No matter what sport is a favorite to compete in or watch, Blue Springs Junior High has a sport for every Wildcat. With added incentive caused by the loss of all our trophies, the Wildcat teams kept moving right along. We had one of the best seasons ever and even added the swimming teams due to the completion of the new pool. As usual, a quick team and active crowd made the sports events some of the favorite activities at BSJH. QIIV 72 el' This past year, thanks to the fire, a new sport was developed at Blue Springs Junior High. It was called, Office Running. The school had been left without an intercom system. The administrative offices had to be split upt into opposite corners of the building. Several classes had to meet at the Hansel Lowe School two blocks away. Communication was at an all time low. Thus, office runners were born. These runners helped to bridge the communication gap that existed. They summoned students from class when necessary. Getting the Absentee Lists--Get a Student--Take a Note--Run to Hansel-Lowe--Deliver the Absentee Lists-- vf' ,:xi,.,,:s,-1. ssl, f gg.f1f.2e:.a::l4ffgme-.se at rkf Get 3 Slide! Office Runner information to and from Hansel Lowe was less of a problem when a runner sped along the distance. Runners delivered daily absentee lists, bulletins, and took materials to classes to be taken home with students. The office runners became an invaluable help to the school. Each hour students volunteered of their time and talents as they gave up study hall time. Everyone who served as an office runner truly kept BSJH moving right along. adent Take a Note--Run to Hansel-Lowe--Deliver the Absentee Lists--Get a Student--Take a Note--Run to Han L . , I . The wrestlers practiced at the high school daily during the season and competed with the high school team. Even though they competed against other freshmen from area schools, competition was tough. Many opponents had wrestled in YMCA programs for five or six years. Several boys on the team were stand-outs. In particular they were, Ben Becker, Dan Whitney, Mike Nelson, Tim Cox, Doug Gossett, Neidig. Coach Fritchie said that, Overall, this group of ninth graders is the best group of wrestlers that we have ever had in one class. The wrestlers participated in three tournaments. They placed second in the St. Joseph Central Frosh Tournament, third at the Winnetonka Frosh Tour- nament, and second at the Bethany Junior Varsity Tournament. These boys should provide top calibre wrestling at Blue Springs for years to come. BSJH freshmen ran with their own team as well as with the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams of the high school. Practice began for the Cross Country runners last summer. They ran 5 - 8 miles a day, no matter how high the temperature rose. ln August, training picked up to 10 miles per day as the opening of the season drew near. When school began many runners worked out in the morning before classes in addition to the 8-10 mile afternoon practice. Those participating from the Junior High were: C. J. Moeller, Doug Kingsley, Billy McCracken, John Weston, and David Porter. Doug Kingsley was one of the individuals that made winning the state meet a reality, said Coach Darling. Doug finished 20th at the state Cross Country Championships which is an accomplishment for a freshman. He also made the All-District and All-Regional Cross-Country teams. Cross Country David Porter cut almost 9 minutes off his six mile time during the season and thus became the most improved runner on the team. He should be a leader at the Junior Varsity level in 1981 and may challenge for one of the Varsity spots. C. J. Moeller ran second man on the Junior Varsity team and will be on next year's team as they will be defending their state championship title. Coach Darling said the C. J., ran very well as a freshman. One of the runners hampered by many injuries throughout the season was Bill McCracken. Bill should, however, help out on the Junior Varsity in 1981. Coach Vernon Darling, who is an outstanding runner himself shares a relaxing moment with members of his cross country team. Coach Darling was an All-American in cross country and steeplechase at Northwest Missouri State University during his college years. -1 ',w,.,, mg. , Y V. . Bus Drivers Regardless of what anyone may think, there are three important groups that keep BSJH moving right along. These are the custodians, cooks, and bus drivers. The bus drivers have been more important than ever this year. Not only do they deliver Wildcats to school each morning, but this year they have kept them moving back and forth to Hansel-Lowe for classes as well as to the high school for swimming and orchestra. All this moving was done via shuttle buses. While the students are busy expending energy each day, the cafeteria personnel help to keep them refueled. The cooks, cashiers, and dishwashers team up to offer a hot lunch as well as a snack bar for the gourmet with less of an appetite. Custodians - Cooks The custodial staff at BSJH is headed by Mr. Delvin Chubick. It is he and his staff that keep the junior high in tip top shape. From fixing the boiler to setting clocksg from selling milk to sweeping floors, the custodians are some .very valuable people. T The day custodians, in addition to Mr. Chubick are Charles Crist and Tim Yeagle. The night custodial staff includes Ruby Morris, Raymond Morris, Mary Smith and Doug Littrell. i rw I by g spnugyes on-xg I, s 3 'Q ig' lf. r Ms. gl' f A-..
