GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM Left to right-back row-Mary Lou Pressly, Maud Morris, Betty Burkhardt, Peggy Brownfield, Pat McCarthy, NOrma Lee Nichols, Mary Beth Kirby, Mary Sheets, Barbara Crawford, Louise Todt, Mn Sears, Mary Lou Beyers, and Sue Callaway. The Blue Springs.Wildkittens started out the season quite handicaped by lack of experi- ence. Mary Lou Beyers was the only one of the first team of the preceding year. The first call for basketball practice saw twenty girls report, of which Sue Callaway, Mary Beth Kirby Betty Burkhardt, and Elma June Arthur were returning letter men. Maud Mbrris, Peggy Brown- field, Louise Todt, Mary Lou Pressly, Norma Lee Nichols, Mary Sheets, and Barbara Crawford made up the first twelve for the year. The season opened with the Kittens in a newly formed conference called the Mhd-West.The opposition in the new conference was a little tough for the Kittens, they won 3 games, tied l, and lost 4. The conference tournament was held at Ruskin, the Kittens lost their first game against Center 27-22 and then went in to the consolation bracket opposite Belton. The Kittens defeated Belton easily with a score of 59-22. They then played Harrisonville in the consolation finals. Harrisonvilledefeated Blue Springs by one point. In the last quarter Beyers and Burkhardt fouled out with the team only one point ahead. Harriscnville scored a- nother basket and won the gane 25-24. Betty Burkhardt made all-star. The first game of the season was with Bates City whom the Kittens defeated 59-21. The entire squad saw action. The second game saw our old rival, Grain Valley, lose by only one point. 40 to 59. The season was up and down from then on. Blue Springs held its Seventh Annual Invitational Tournament in February. The first game in the tournament was with Bates City whom the Kittens defeated: the second with Plea- sant Hill whom we also defeated, this placed the Kittens in the finals to play Ruskin for championship. Ruskin being the better team defeated Blue Springs and took first. The Kithns took second. Betty Burkhardt made all-star. We also entered the Lee's Summit and Pleasant Hill tournaments but lost out in the fi- nal session of each. Sue Callaway made the all-star team in both tournaments. The season record reads lO victories, 9 defeats, and 1 tie.
