This is the first suc¬ cessful student government Blue Ridge has had in twenty years. Although the boys were inexperi¬ enced in the duties of this office, with the coopera¬ tion of the faculty and student body they ably demonstrated their ability for leadership and raised the social standards of the students. The Esquire Club During the two years the Esquire Club has been in existence it has made an outstanding con¬ tribution to the social life of the school. The club was founded by a group of boys who wanted to create an opportunity for social gatherings, to plan picnics, parties, etc. At first, because of lack of interest, little progress was made, but through the generosity of the members a well furnished club room was attained. At the opening of this school year six returning members reorganized the club with the hope of a more successful year than the one before. With the addition of seven new members the club be¬ gan to make an upward climb towards success. A television set which was soon added to the club greatly increased the enthusiasm of its members. The club ' s next achievement was in the middle of the winter term. With the full cooperation of club members, student body, faculty, and patrons, one of the most successful dances in the history of the school was held. Due to the success of the club this year, in the following years it will probably sponsor the school dances. Page Ten FRONT ROW: Bruce Bechard, Buddy Hamrick, Jimmie Reeves, and Carl Badgett. BACK ROW: Charles Neves, Warren Swanson, Freddie Greenwood. Walton Moore, Cornelius Lassiter, and Jack Badgett. The Library Club The Blue Ridge Chapter of the North Carolina High School Library Association was organized for the fifth year under the sponsorship of Mrs. Morris. Officers elected for the school year were: Jimmie Reeves, president; Charles Neves, secre¬ tary; Buddy Hamrick, vice president, and Walton Moore, treasurer. The club has endeavored to increase interest in the library by chapel programs, a book week skit, a tea given to introduce the student body and faculty to the new books. In January five members motored to Asheville with Mrs. Morris to the Western District Luncheon Meeting. The members were acquainted with the new film strip projector and its operation as part of their library project. The state convention in Salisbury was attended by several members and officers of the club. The club displayed a scrapbook of its work there. Plans have been made for the club to be con¬ tinued next year. Page Eleven I ' ii i! The club encourages cooperation among the members in carrying out joint projects democratic¬ ally agreed upon. Not only does the club seek to further the nature interest and education of its own members but also seeks to spread its in¬ fluence to others. Among activities which the members plan are: conducting hikes and excur¬ sions, setting up a vivaria, performing science ex¬ periments and demonstrations, planning a science exhibit, etc. The activities of the club are timed to coincide with the planning and teaching of other subjects. The Schoal Dance On Saturday night, February the second, at eight o ' clock sharp life around Blue Ridge School started to buzz. The school dance opened with Elmer C. Luck and his orchestra beating out the national anthem, Dixie. From eight until mid¬ night the environment was filled with music and laughter. There was a smile on every face and a twinkle in every eye, and no one had any com¬ plaints. The dance was sponsored by the Esquire Club, and with the full cooperation of all the members, the faculty, and the patrons the club was able to make it a great success. Under the leadership of Hugh Neisler the decorating committee created a beautiful ball room in the study hall. The color scheme was red and white. Red drapes were hung in the windows, and the orchestra stand was set off by red and white crepe paper. Other than the dance hall Mrs. Morris beautifully decorated a class room in which to serve refreshments at intermission. Tables with red and white cloths were arranged on opposite sides of the room. Mrs. Sandifer and Mr. and Mrs. Simpson served a very delicious punch. All the factors con¬ tributed to the success of the dance which will be well remembered in the future history of the school. With this in mind the staff of the 1952 BLUE RIDGIAN has attempted to present a complete though informal re¬ view of the current school year. We have proudly presented for your enjoyment the first edition of the BLUE RIDGIAN. The Editor Page Twenty-Seven THE 1932 GRADUATING CLASS, reprinted in commemoration of Iheir 20th Anniversary The 1952 BLUE RIDGIAN has had many school annuals to come before it at Blue Ridge. This is the first annual the school has had in about twenty-five years. We hope that it will not be such a span between this and the next such book. The last annual that can be remembered is the 1926 GADAWHEE. The name being an Indian one can be translated to mean Land of the Sky. Among the boys who worked on it then are Mayne Albright, H. H. Eden and Milton Brice. We hope that the 1952 BLUE RIDGIAN measures up to the high standards that these men set with our predecessor.
