For a young team they played exceptionally well against usually more experienced teams. When the team was losing their morale stayed high due to the leadership of Co-Captains Kelly Robinson and John Pennington. This leadership as well as improved execution paved the way to ending on a winning note. From last years losing record the Barons battled to a 5-4 season. For a team only two years in the Prep League some honor was given when five of its members made the All Prep Squad. A coaching staff which had worked together for a year. and had more talent to work with developed the team from an inexperienced squad to a well devel- oped one. For the assistant coaches getting the tough jobs of molding them together they were rewarded by seeing long hours and hard work pay off. The team is only losing five starters. With an experienced squad coming back the team should improve so that one day they will rule the Prep League. 99 + 'gi ' 3 ' 2 ,ig 'at ny: g y - A ' L ' ' A W ' .i n- if :- ' u if A q Q. There is a demand for strength. mental and physical which if one does not have he has no business being out there. This years team consisted of mostly new players which were soon to learn that the sport is not an easy one to master. Those who stuck out the season became veterans ofthe 15 mile run and know the meaning of cramps and pain. The team finished with a winning season of 5-3. although not very impressive it was all well deserved. Finishing as a group became part ofthe teams mark and helped them to do well. Last years junior state cross-country winner Frank Holt along with Chris Felchlin and Lee Swift helped to make the season a winning one. First year runner Johnny Lawson who was the number two man helped greatly. Most important to this years team was the presence oi Coach Barnes. who with experience and stop watch in hand pushed the team to becoming a winner. With 8 out of 14 runners returning the future looks good for the team. With the fact the new team faces will appear next year and they will be looking for an even better record. They also swept four tournaments with record high totals and finished the season off by taking second in the National Prep Tournament. This years team had great performances from three time State Champion Capt. Lee Swift. 29-1 and by two time National Prep Champ Joe Valenete, 30- 3. They were backed up by line performances from the rest of the team. The grapplers beat such powers as Woodberry Forest, Norfolk Academy and Bishop O'Connell while on their way to glory. Only losing five starters the squad should be exceptionally strong for next season. The reason being that this years B and C teams were ll-0 + 6-0 respectfully. Dropping many weaker teams, next years will be facing many state and out of state powers. With the tougher schedule it is hoped that it will make them ready to take the Nationals next year. , Ill 4 w N i 1 112 Wrestling B Team I w I 1 1 1 1 1 1 J. V. With only two starting seniors of varsity experience Coach Parrott had to rely on the experienced members for support. Yet this group of mostly soph- omores proved themselves capable of handling the task. Finishing with a 6-I5 record it looked as if the team did poorly. That is not true, it was the fact that inexperience played an important role. There were moments, especially towards the end of the season when people 7 like Beech and Baker played exceptional ball. The losing season behind them the team looks for a success in the years 7 ahead. With inexperience behind them they should improve exceptionally. l l J l l 4 l ,A,. , A 1- H in H ' Q A f 2 wr 95 f . Belfield F U MA V.E.S. Norfolk Academy Episcopal RMA RMA Woodberry Collegiate Varsity Soccer It was a cold season for the ulron Men of Dyke. The team lacked experi- ence as several first year players got a look at Prep League competition. After being downed in the opener by defending champions Norfolk Acad- emy. the team was inspired by pep talks from the coaches and the captains. In the second game against V.E.S. they rallied to beat them 2-1. This paved the way for the next several weeks as the determination kept alive and the team picked' up two more wins. In the next game against E.H.S. the Barons came from behind with two minutes left to pull out with a 2-2 tie. Many players thought that that was the highlight of the season. Unfortunately the winning ended with Belfield as the Barons only picked up one more win. The season ended with a 4-6-l record. Co-captains Allen Wilson and Steve Keville put forth fine performances. Earl Fox, John Moncure, and Campbell Coxe should be commended for their performances too. The team was honored when Will Rhame was chosen All Prep Honorable Mention. Will made 15 of the 17 goals scored. Coaches France and Knauff really got the young team where they were as they boosted morale and increased their knowledge of the game. r 121 r .V. Varsity Lacrosse This years lacrosse team was a young one. So young that it only had two seniors on the team. , Inexperienced playing the major reason for defeat, the team Hnished the season with a 5-7 record. With an all underclassman line up which is usually not seen in Varsity level competition they played exceptional ball. The hard hitting of Jimmy Moore with fine stick work from Jimmy Greives and John McLaughlin makes one look to the future. For along with them the team shall travel far on the road to success in the seasons up coming. Signs of the future were seen when the stickmen shelled Norfolk Academy 14-2 in their final game of the season. 127 i 4 1 l28 1 P 1 3 y 5. x - - A A N Q.-s s My '. .Y 'G . u , 1 b - f' , , J. The record was 3-7 it looks to the average person that they did poorly. But the Thin clads lost many of their meets by a mere two or three points. When looking at the reason the team lacked two essentials, distance men and the lack of the team to finish with Seconds and thirds. - This years squad had no problems getting first with outstanding perfor- mances by Steve Keville, John Northington, Gatewood Gay and Delay Aikins but it takes more then three or four to win a meet. The most disheartening thing in alose meet was that the team had to forfeit the two mile race and only had one mile. The team was a fairly young one with much talent yet to be uncovered. Sophomore Kevin Schwab was just coming around by the end of the season. Next years team will see many new faces plus many old ones. .With more talent and depth coaches look forward to a much improved records. 13l l F. R. This years team had only one senior starter out ofthe nine ballplayers. Although the record was low the team moral'e was high. With inexperience playing a major factor the team did pull together to beat teams like Episcopal and Christ Church.
