WILBUR DAVIS BAILEY With the closing exercises of this school year, the Blue Ridge community bids farewell to one of its most respected members, Mr. Wilbur D. Bailey. Always appreciated for his gentlemanly manner and astute scholarship, perhaps what will be most sorely missed is his sense of hu- mor which eased our way through many a day. These past four years will be fondly remembered by those who had the pleasure of working both with and for him. We shall miss you, Mr. Bailey-you and your Trapezoid! DEDICATIUN In appreciation for the lives you have helped us form while at Blue Ridge, and the directions in which you have pointed us, we dedicate this Challenger to you, Father Iohn . We will long remember your enthusiasm in everything from sex education to really very fine anything, be it a college or a bottle of wine. You have shown us how to take an interest and build enthusiasm in it. You have taught us how to be involved and totally devoted to one thing. We thank you. The season was rebuilding year for the Barons as they compiled a disappoint- ing 2-5-1 record in their first year of Prep League competition. This years coaching staff increased in both size and potential as a new slate of coaches concentrated their skills in order to pull the team together. From Univer- sity of Virginia, Coaches Davis and Scott along with Coach Davenport, a returning alumnus, were a great asset to the structure of this years team. Al- though Blue Ridge suffered defeat on several occasions, their hard hitting and spirit was to be commended. l07 RECORD: 4-5 First Row: Pidgeon, Sloan, B., Davis, Whittle, Stratton, Carver, Ben nett, Smith, L., Iones, Ch., Craddock, Otey, Averett, Rowland, Fernan, Abston, Feddeman, Keville, Bentley, Townsend, Iones, Ca. In such a sport as Cross Country, men- tal discipline and physical condition are the two basic ingredients in the making of the successful competitor. During the fall of 1972, the Blue Ridge Cross Country team acheived a note- worthy 4-5 season. Such a season un- doubtedly takes hard work and sacri- fice. The course often consisted of a football field, a side walk, a mountain stream, or an open country road. The race not only against one's opponent, but against one's own mind. During the course of the season, the Barons, a fourth year team, traveled far and wide to lock horns with well known wrestling powers across the statef The team's fighting spirit and love for the sport can in no way be over- looked when one considers the achievements of such a team. In the course of the season, this year's basketball team packed a busy sched- ule, playing eighteen games, eleven of which were in Prep League com- petition. This year's team consisted of the old, young, experienced, and inex- perienced. With returning letterman Tom Pippin as Captain, the squad fought hard for a somewhat disap- pointing 5-13 record. Although the sea- son was less rewarding than expected, Mr. Parrott, the team's coach and trainer, lived up to his job by backing the team with spirit and drive through- out the entire season. Freezing hands, chapped lips, and frost bitten feet were to be expected during the daily practice. With the combined coaching of Mr. Knauff and Mr. France along with the leadership of captain Kent Cadwalader, the Barons strived to be title contenders. Although there was a great deal of spirit and desire to win, the squad didn't pull together until late in the season. There were many experi- enced players who were the backbone of the squad. One of the highlights of the season was to have Catesby Iones recieve Honorable Mention on the All- Prep team. L , TRACK When spring came rolling around this year, a few Track coaches had their doubts about the season that stared them in the eyes. However, it was not long before school records were being broken, and team points accumulated. With a great deal of hard work and en- thusiasm, the 1973 Track team pulled their way to a tremendous 7-2 season. Coaches Parrott, France, Davis, and Barton, through their dedication to the athletes, were the responsible figures for such a season. Topping off the year was a Blue Ridge Track team, taking fourth place in a State Wide Prep School meet. By it's origin, Lacrosse is a war game in which the contestants display their skill and speed as well as toughness. The 1973 Barons, coached by Mr. Knauff, were a living representation of that same fe- rocity which characterized the age-old warriors. With tri-captains Chris Hup- feldt, Martin Fenwick, and Steve Parker, the Blue and White roped an 8- 5 season as they cut through the best teams in the league. Coach Knauff's team was the only Blue Ridge team on the varsity level to shut down Wood- berry's winning machine in 73'. Blue Ridge Lacrosse is gaining popu- larity with each year of existence. With more seasons like the last, there should be nothing to stand in the way of such a growth. 143 I N I 144 First Row: Iones, Ch., McLaughlin, Brown, B., Felchlin, Schraff, Braase, Brown, W., Basnight, McNeel, Coxe, Townsend, Smith, D Morton, Dudley, Hodges, B., Gibson. This year, a newly established B team gave the Varsity a bi-level pro- gram. The Varsity was scheduled to play over twenty games this season, however, rainy weather interfered and only sixteen were played. Of those six- teen games, five were victories and eleven were losses. Second year cap- tain Tom Pippin, along with five other seniors, gave the 1973 Baseball team that one needed twitch for the real action of such a magnificent sport. This year, there has been a change. This year, people were sitting up and taking notice . . . taking notice and fi- nally becoming enthusiastic. There is no doubt about the big step that the team has taken since last lear, and with a coach as dedicated as Mr. Frye, Baseball will strengthen and con- tinue to win in future years. k 14 , gffl X . . if S ' , , - ' ,aw '- H Lg f I, -5,445 I W l ' is ? , ' f ,mi 1 ' f - ' ' is A, P l 3 1 2' W 4 f ' 4, - , -wifi 1- ',.f!. ,e..:- ,QW ' ? wi . 45 - ,-',, ,, rf,-32.1-,, .M 31, f f ia., 134 , A . in A 4.1 , 1 753, -I ,, Q. ,Zim - ,V f- - .g,w..'ggj LM, --f,.:fn:m 'j' ,Q A f ,,,,, . Although several of last years lettermen did not return, Coach Glover did a respectable job in winning seven matches out of fifteen. Throughout the course of the season, the Varsity Tennis team had it's ups and downsg with two appen- dectomies and other sickness, the Bar- ons were hindered, however captain Willis White brought the fight back and the team beat undefeated Belfield by a score of 5-4. Blue Ridge Golf instructor, Mr. Eason, might disagree. This years Golf team had to bear the misfortunes of an extremely rainy sea- son in which only eleven matches were played. The Squad's high spirit was in no way reduced bythe weather, but in- stead, their desire for fairway com- petition was re-enforced. Mr. Eason and his team captured seven victories and two forfeits, which put them at 9-5 for the season.
