SCHMICK HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE During these first ten years of its operation the Blue Ridge High School has brought to its pupils the best educational program that the community could afford. The records of its graduates speak wellof this program. However, an educationalprogram can- not become static if it is to continue to effectively prepare our boys and girls to meetthe ever more difficult challenges of an increasingly complex so- ciety. Sociological and technological factors, both na- tional and international, have a tremendous impact on our educational program--yes on our educational program here at Blue Ridge. Racial problems, un- employment, prosperity, a u t o m at i o n , cold wars, space exploration and the common market are but a few of the events that affect the curriculum. For this reason curriculum development and improvement mustbe constant. Our problem then is to determine the forces behind new knowledge and advanced tech- nology, then we will have the answer for such develop- ment as the new mathematics programs or the need for more Science, English, Health, and Foreign Lan- guages in the curriculum. In the next ten years we shall continue to put forth every effort, within the means of the community, to meet the needs of our pupils. HOWARD F. C. THOMAS SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE As this issue of the Torch is distributed it ,marks the beginning of the second decade of our Blue Ridge School System. Each issue pays tribute to a sincere group of high school seniors, their teachers, advisors, and admin- istrators who are working hand in hand with an in- terested school board and other community leaders to carve the name of Blue Ridge high on the list of schools of Pennsylvania. As you near your commencement and graduate from our ranks, may this step be just the commence- ment of a life of service and further education for which we have all endeavored to prepare you. ,Nu-nP'V is ,y WW MR. Under the Rotary Ex- change Student Program, I spent a year in New Zealand and attended the Gisborne Boys' High School in the city of Gisborne, in the North Island. ' New Zealand's system of education differs from ours in many ways. Since it is a small country, its education is directed by the national government. As a result, the standard is high and uniform throughout the country. Also, because of New Zealand's location in the Southern Hemisphere, the school year is not the same. It is broken up into three terms of approximately equal length. The summer holidays are the months of December and January, the autumn break is the last two weeks of May, the winter break is the last two weeks of August and the first week of September. The four years of high school are called Forms 3, 4, 5, and 6. In Form 5, all stu- dents take the School Certificate Exam, in Form 6, they take the University Entrance Exam. Each is a national exam and, if passed, entitles a person to a higher starting wage in many jobs. After obtaining his U.E. , a student may return to high school for a fifth year to do advanced work. Fewer New Zealanders than Americans attend university, for they can get a good job in many fields without specialized training. In New Zealand, high school is the only level of education at which the sexes are sep- arated. In most cities, boys and girls attend separate high schools and wear uniforms. Each school has its own uniform, that of the Gisborne Boys' High School is a grey shirt, navy blue shorts, black knee socks, and black shoes. For extra warmth, one wears a grey woolpulloverwithaneckband of the schoolcolors, red and black., For dress-up occasions with long trousers and a white shirt, one wears a school tie and blazer. A black cap with red trim is a part of both everyday and dress uniforms. I found discipline more strict in New Zealand schools. There is more respect for the teacher, before he begins class, the boys stand until told to sit. When the principal enters the room, the boys stand up and shut up. In a boys' school, all teachers are men, they are addressed as Sir in class. Punishment takes the form of a thin cane of bamboo. Six of the best from the cane are not easily forgotten. New Zealanders are keen on sports, and the boys must engage in some sport as a school activity. The favorite summer sport is cricket, the winters are warm enough for the playing of rugby football. High school boys must participate in a military training program similar to our college R.O.T.C. The boys in the picture are products of the New Zealand educational system. They are the class of which Iwas a part: Form 6B1, 1962. --Frank Innes 86 Qsopfomore jlgsfory We started our sophomore year with the election of new officers. Charles Craig was elected Presi- dentg Vice-President-Edward Bow- mang Secretary-Teresa Lashinksig and Treasurer-Frank Innes. During the year a few of our classmates were chosen to repre- sent Blue Ridge in the County Festi- val. These musical fellows were: Charles Kinsley, Michael Hornak, Bill Williams, Charles Melhuish, and Clayton Clark. Also, two of our future home- makers were honored at the Penn- sylvania State Farm Show. The first prize went to Arlene Billings for her b e a u t if ul hand-stenciled tablecloth.
