The poems included in eacn publication are selected by competent judges in the poetical literary field from poems submitted by high school students in the United States. This year's mid-winter Anthology will con- tain three poems written by William Ball , Elmer Heier and Wilma Wright , stu- dents of English in grade ten of the Great Bend building. Hurricane Hazel, Winter Scene and Snowfall are the titles of the winning poems. We feel thatthese pupils are to be congratu- lated on their achievement in the field of crea- tive literature. 52 Every year the National Essay Association of Los Angeles, California, publishes an An- nual Anthology of high school essays called, Young America Speaks. The essays that are s el e c t e d for publication must meet the strict requirements set up by the Association. The purpose of these annual Anthologies is to promote better expression of ideas, and to encourage the pupils of our nation to express freely, clearly and thoughtfully their ideas on pertinent subjects of the age in which they are living. These books are also used by many schools as text books from which the pupils learn by examples and evaluations of the es- says of other people in their own age and school group. This is the first year the students of the Great Bend Building have entered this national competition, and we are very proud of the re- sults. The essays submitted by Patricia McHugh, a senior, and by Carl Smith , a junior, have been accepted for publication in that volume of the Essay Anthology which contains the essays submitted by pupils from our state and section of the United States. 1 Ya 23554, , Bob HinHey Bob Hinkley winning the 880 at District Meet in time only one tenth second off the record. Bob Rood Bob Rood record breaker in the discus throw with a throw of 141 ft. 6 in. at District Meet. He placed 4th at Penn State. In July at Endicott he won a third place trophy in A. A. U. competition. Sam Cronk Sam Cronk's record is very impressive. He won two out of the three events he was entered in at the District Meet, the 220 and the 440, and took second place in the 100. He went to Penn State and took sixth place out of twenty-four in the 440. Ed Downs Ed Downs, triple threat field star. At Scranton in July Ed won the pole vault and was third in the high jump at Junior Olym- pics in Memorial Stadium. Arthur Scott The outstanding F. F.A. boy in the class of '55 is Arthur Scott. His farming program consists of Aryshire cattle, corn, oats, bar- ley, and buckwheat with a quick money project of swine. His political capabilities show up by the fact that he has held a chapter office each of his four years of high school reporter, treasurer, vice-president of the Chapter. He also held the position of Treasurer of the Susquehanna County Council of the F. F. A. Each year Arthur has placed in the award division at the state dairy project held at the Pennsylvania State University. On November 17, 1954, Arthur received the Susquehanna County Degree. On January 12, 1955, Arthur was awarded the Keystone Farmers Degree at the Pennsyl- vania State Association meeting in Harrisburg. After triumphing in local and county con- tests, Bonnie tied for first place in a State Grange Declamation Contest, which was held at Washington, Pennsylvania. Bonnie chose to speak on I Corinthians: 13 instead of the Gettysburg Address, which was spoken by the other winners. Congratulations on your success, Bonnie. BONNIE VAN SLYKE Nineteen schools in the county participated in ' 'The Lynn Rosenkrans Memorial Conserva- tion Essay and Poster Contest, sponsored by the Susquehanna County Sportsman's Club. Every student in the sophomore and junior class was eligible to write an essay on con- servation, then the school was to pick out the best one. On April 8, 1954, Martha was awarded a gold wrist watch and the school received a fourteen inch trophy for placing first in the county. MARTHA POTTER X-XL E 77? On November 8, 1954, the Blue Ridge Girl's Basketball team started practice in New Milford gymnasium. There were approximately 35 girls at the start of the season, but in a matter of weeks they were divided into Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. At the present time, we have 16 girls on the Varsity squad. We have four girls on our first string, who were on the squad last year. They are Toni Austin, Bonnie Jarvis, Linda Taylor, and Martha Potter. There were also quite afew new girls that made the team. In addition to them, we had a new coach, Miss Roberta Jones, of the New Milford faculty. Toni Austin was chosen captain, and a new co-captain was chosen for every game by Miss Jones.
