Senior Poem The emblem of truest affection, The rose, dear, I give now to thee. It breathes out my deepest devotion, Accept then this token from me. My comrade in hours of pleasure, ln seasons of sorrow my guide, ' My strength in my moments of weakness, Yea, always, the true and the tried. y Through sunshine and shadow, how faithful The light of thy spirit has shown. In the new life we now are beginning, God grant us the sunlight alone. By the pathway that stretches before thee, May the fairest of wild flowers bloom, With just enough tares intermingled To sweeten their subtle perfume. May roses and lilies surround thee, Thy efforts be crowned with success, Life's valleys grow bright with they presence Thy mission to love and to bless. If thy pathway, at evening, seems dreary, Smile on, though the shadows may fall. Remember thy Father, and cheer thee- l-le heareth His children who call. When the roses and lillies have faded, And thy life-star is low in the west, God grant thee His tranquilest twilight And the rapture of infinite rest. G. S I3 . fl pnn1lv ' 1- 1-1: f 1 ,. 5 s Senior History INETEEN little maidens were at play in a valley, happy and free from care. One day ,I ag A . . . . d there came lnto their midst' a radiant an B powerful personality, Ambition. Day by day he won the confidence and hearts of these little people until he became to each of them a companion and friend. Many were the stories he told them and splendid the pictures he sketched of the sights he had seen in the land from which he had come. l-le told them of far-away climes, of valleys, of mountains, of cities, but most he delighted to tell them of the mystical city called Victory. Each child was siezed with a desire to set forth in search of the city and to see with her own brave eyes its wonderful and witching splendors. Ambition pro- vided a way. They boarded the car Perseverance which was moved by the Power of Will. Faith was the engi- neer and I-lope the faithful fireman, while at the brake stood Patience. Their best friend, perhaps, was Self- Control, who was the obliging conductor. It was a glorious day when they began their long, long journey. At first all was excitement for the ex- perience was new and wonderful and the scenes in the valley were constantly changing. Finally the new began to wear away and some were frightened as they swept across the River of Toil. Next the Plains of Weariness were passed. For a little while the train stopped at a witching, fascinating station' called Freshman. Here the girlish inmates gained new courage and inspiration. Again they sped on through the emerald landscape. By this time they had learned beautiful lessons from Faith, Hope and Patience. The station of Sophomore at length flashed full in view. Only a moment they tar- ried. On and on they sped through the Sophomoric land. Broader and braver the regions grew till they thrilled with the joy of it all. At length the train slowed up at the central station of the Juniorp Owing to the recent raise in the level of the track, the train was temporarily delayed. But inspired with visions of the splendors of Seniorville, 'the brave young band tool: heart, smiled as their train toiled steadily onward and dreamed of the goal on before. Finally 'mid the ringing of bells and the shrieks of whistles, proudly they swept into the station of Senior. With a graceful and majestic motion they glided over ballusted roadbeds through the gorgeous scenes of Graduate land. At last the bright lights of the city of Victory twinkled through the purple twilight. On swept the stately limited into the beautiful city. Ended was the journey, their dream goal was real, To a Liille sufferer- theirs was the rapture-the victory, with eyes dim with tears yet with hearts full of joy they stepped from their train-forever. In the great central station of Graduate they watch for the search light of the twentieth century limited on the grand trunk line of life. A. B. C.--'I 3. The fall of the rain in the night- How it soothes with its steady pourg And the wierd, cool wind at the door Brings a longed-for companionship. Oh, it helps in the fight against paing For a solace will come with the rain- With the fall of the rain in the night. O. C. M.-'l3. Should auld acquaintance be forgot Since friendship has no peer? Should memories of our college life Be lost when they're so dear? No-we would not ever lose them So we read The Mountaineer. Should auld acquaintance be forgot In this old mundane sphere, Where cares and sadness worry, Storms threaten far and near? Ah, we would e'er be happy, And we read The Mountaineer. Should auld acquaintance be forgot Tho' some friends should be queer, Why everybody has their faults, So don't you stop and jeerg But read about their graces In this treasured Mountaineer, Should auld acquaintance be forgot, Oh, we live from year to year, Forever -wanting more and more, Forever sighing, filled with fear, But all the greed is absent ln this wholesome Mountaineer. Should auld' acquaintance be forgot? My friend, just stop and hear That from all the bards and poets Up to Shakespeare's old King Lear, There is nothing takes the place, Of Blue Mountain's Mountaineer. - -M. E. The thought of her awakened a vague resentment that the poor dog had to be her ill-treated property. Old Mother Hubbardi'-tradition gives us no hint of the life of the old lady, no clue to her birthplace or former station in life, but these few lines are a perfect epitome of her character. Undoubtedly she was care- less and untidy in appearance, for has not the garment, which of all feminine apparel is the very synonym for slouchiness and slovenliness,, been called by her name? Again she was not a thrifty housewife, for had she been, she would have administered to the physical wants of her canine companion immediately after her own repast had been finished, or she would have carefully putfaway, the scraps on the top shelf of the receptacle for 'surplus food, there to await his dogship's pleasure. V , But then she was a kindly soul. Let me not give the impression that Old Mother Hubbard was all thought- less selfishness-for therfact that she kept a dog to whose begging she was not deaf and for whom she went to the cupboardn is a point in her favor, bespeaking a ten- der heart and amiable disposition. The cupboard -what type or style of furniture this was we can only conjecture. It might have been some priceless mahogany antique-an heirloom with claw feet and brass handles. Cr perhaps it was a battered old kitchen safe, sent to her by the Society for the Protec- tion and Maintenance of lndigent, lncompetent, Super- annuated Females. Perhaps it was the lone represen- tative of a former affluent condition before she sank to this present hand-to-mouth existence. Suffice it to say- some article of furniture, clearly designed for harboring food was included in her household furnishings. Miss Blank, what per cent. of information does mem- ory retain and how soon do we forget? r Miss Blank, whose mind was on last night's Lyceum lecture, and who had been wondering if Jack's in those patient eyes, the quiet creeping away to lie down on the hard floor, there to meditate upon the strange and devious ways of a cold and unfeeling world. Pt ll' aglow with crimson and gold, and the brown of the dying leaves, framed in a background of beautiful evergreens. I stopped for a moment-spellbound-then went on a few steps and dropped down on the fragrant pine! needles to enjoy the glory of the scene. While sitting thus, I fell to building enormous, but pathetically shaky castles in the air. , . I-Iere I was-a poor Soph, jeered at, taunted by everyone. Why, only this morning I had heard one of our professors say, A Sophomore, Young- Ladies, is merely a learned foolf, and goodness knows, I felt like one! But never mind, next year I'd be a real Junior, and then I'd not be merely a learned foolf'-I'd be somebody! ' 1 A Then growing braver, I beheld myself a staid and dignified Senior. I now had nothing to do but go to receptions and enjoy my coveted privileges. Now it was commencement, I saw a crowded hall, the people were all gazing at the platform in front, where me-the Sen- iors-were receiving our diplomas. I heard my name called. I stepped forward to receive the object of my dreams, when' suddenly-just when I had my sheep- skin in my very hand-far off in the distance I heard a bell. Was it a fire-alarm or a funeral knell? I started up. No, no-it was neither. It wasqthe supper bell. But where was I? The hall? The flowers? The sheep-skin? I was only a poor little Soph, with geometry and latin to prepare for the morrow, and no supper. -AR. C.-'I5. Sophomore Toasts ERE.'S to the new girl who comes first upon ll 9 the campus with one fixed idea, and that, to wash away the college and its inmates .' thereof. She is usually a damp, red-eyed, shiny-nosed personality who breathes out sadness and homesickness upon the mournful world. She weeps until the work is arranged. This lasts, in extreme cases, for two weeksg after which she develops into what is known as the hard-student class, or into a have-a-good-time-er. The former need not be spoken of-they always speak for themselves. They are usually found among the Alumnae or Seniors. The second class is usually developed by a great re- action after the deluge of tears, although there are some girls who come merrily to college without shedding a tear, having gained their idea of college life from cur- rent fiction, and expecting it to be a round of receptions, candy-making, and midnight feasts. If you were of the latter class, you surely remember when you left home, musing: there would be no more lectures from father, no little sermons from mother. This you thought upon as the train carried you away from your troubles into bliss and everlasting sunshine! The first few days were rather tiresome, but you comforted yourself with the thought that organization would soon be overg feasts and fun would be unin- terrupted by boring lessons. A week passed. Then one morning at chapel, Dr. Lowrey announced, I sup- pose all the young ladies have been classified, so now we will get down to hard study. I-lard study! why, you had heard nothing but books since you arrived. Then the days that followed! Wheni did Mrs. Berry sleep? Why did the rising bell ring so early? You could sleep much later at home. And why did the teachers assign lessons that took up all the candy- making time? And so, you found in the course of time that college life was meant for study. May you profit by it! And now, here's to the Flunkers! Who can under- stand the pathos of a Hunked Sophomore? This poor, misunderstood, hard-working girl alone knows that it is the fault of her teachers.. Why should they ask so many questions? For was it not by the teacher's lack of ability to read between i the lines that you failed? They did not know that it took much more thought and originality to write your brilliant answers, than to follow the beaten path of the hook. Luck to you, Flunkers! gn ,W N '11 fQ mE Y 59157 wh- 3 ob 'm ica i !lI?!fl 'W' 'Q-qq A :agua , wf'Qy'ZW i1,5-I' fnsgnsmlmnrgqi i'QtE:ti2Qf - at-1--a:.amm gan IHYDWILQ -s 111970315951 555 Once more, Sophs, glasses high to our recognized superiors in literary lines, the Juniors! SWEET SlXTEEN?FROM THE FRESHMAN CLAss p The Freshman Epoch A N the beginning, .are'the first words of 1 93 rpg! B. M. C. class history as well as the first M words of history without the HM . We are the Freshman Class of '12, the terror of the present and the hope of the future,-in fact the very foundation of B. M. C. Ipse dixit. The Second Reign of Terror began September 24, l9l2, when the good people of Blue Mountain cele- brated the annual arrival of Mr. T. C's. special, and welcomed into their great metropolis, besides the two hundred old girls, fifty of the South's fairest and freshest zealots. Since that immortal date, we have un- selfishly dedicated ourselves to the general uplifting of fallen humanity. That first week at school! It was certainly trying. The girls were frighfully undignified, teachers raced over the campus in wild confusion and disorder reigned in every building. Even the very air seemed charged with all sizes and descriptions of bells and whistles that went off every two minutes. ' Quickly we answered the call of our countrymen, and raising the banner of green and gold on which was writ- ten Liberty, Fraternity, Equality or Death, rushed to the rescue. In our great movement to civilize the fac- ulty and revolutionize Blue Mountain, we have several distinct aimsg the most important of these are: To Instruct the Seniors in much-needed dignityg Give Prof. P. H. a four years' course in Parisian I-lair-dressing 3 Organize an aeroplane system from the Lowrey to the Ray Buildingg - Invent some method of closing the ears of the walls that we may entertain at mid-night feasts undisturbedg Elect Miss Tate president of the American Woman's Suffrage League. Isn't it marvelous? and yet with such noble Heights in view, it is small wonder that we so willing- ly give the best part of our young lives to the cause of our country. Why will the Sophomores insist that we are a con- ceited bunch of youngsters when we only feel the grave responsibilities thrust upon us? -I... G. 'I6. , . . . 13 , ?'Z? GL l llRrrrrrrrrrlV Dear me' What 50:5 --------- . . . l do they think I am? A perpetual motion machine? I suppose so-I havenit had a Ex! momentis peace ito-day. First, it was the postman saying that some sort of thing which he called a proof had come. I havenit the remotest idea what a proof is, but it seems to be connected with a mysterious person, animal or thing called An- nual. This Annual is a puzzle to me. From what I can gather it has to be gotten out by April the first, but whether it is an ox in a ditch, or a new fashion plate, is more than I can fathom. However, not a few lively discussions concerning it have passed through my ear lately. . I Then they had a long-distance call. It was a mem- ber of the staff, evidently to be used in assisting the ox out of the ditch. But no, it is not an ox. For just a moment ago a wild-eyed, white-faced girl rushed in, and snatched up my receiver so ferociously that I fairly tingled. Evidently she is a trained nurse and has been sitting up nights with this Annual -thing. It must be very illg she has ordered cuts and engravingsi' from a long distance as special delicacies. , The worry has taken her appetite. A call came this morning from the butcher, asking if she would have a roast for dinner. Of course the butcher had innocently mixed the numbers, but she indignantly replied, No in- deed. I don't have time to eat anything. When the clinnerbell rang I hoped to have a few min- utes in which to recover my shattered nerves. But vain hope! Just at that instant came another urgent call- all about the same sick Annual. There! the light whistle is blowing, and if that thing doesnit have a night-mare, I hope to rest peacefully till morning. -R. C.- I5. ln The Fall The wind curtly snalches a leaf here and there So bracing, so buoyant, so balmy the airg That I laugh just for gladness, And banish all sadness- In the fall. The morning brings courage for lifeis endless fray, The sunset brings peace at the end of the dayg The worldis full of beauty, And I welcome duty- In the fall. So my life gains a purpose no winter can banish, The sorrows, the heartaches, the cares quickly vanish I'm glad just to live, To love and to give- In the fall. M. E. M.-'I3. V . ' ' ' , - 'I x. M.-'I3 A Night of I-Iorror C'-I'he author acknowledges having read' The Ancient Mariner., I. The light went out upon that night, No moon upon me shone, just then a long, gray thing appeared, And mocked me there, alone. II. I fear thee, green-eyed monster, I fear thy teeth so keen, And thou art long and lank and gray, With cruel, savage mien. III. Alone, alone, all, all alone, Alone in a big, big room, And never a one to pity me, In my dark, drear, dreadful doom. IV. I screamed, threw shoes, a pillow or two, That he stone-dead might lie, But that leering, lanky, long, lean thing, Stayed on--and so did I. V. I looked about the room for help, But drew my eyes away, For crouching near the radiator, That fierce, wild monster lay. VI. I looked to heaven and tried to pray, But or ever a prayer had gusht, A piercing squeak from him did make My heart as dry as dust. VII. That moving thing went up the pipe, And nowhere did abideg Softly he was going up A While glancing to the side. VIII. Oh, sleep! It is a gentle thing, Beloved in every state! But watching that ,green-eyed monster rise I grew most desperate. IX. I That self-same moment I seized a shoe, So thirsting for his goreg I threw that shoe, the monster fell, -A rat upon the floor. , E. s.-'13, I L A C Y Tommre Thomas was her name She heard the call To Arms And now they say that where she IS Q, n D She sends ln Hre alarms X, -L13-,ffl C3 M CGEE m -Da., E She of the Hammg loclcs has gone Q Our dear Camllle IS dead Conjecture says that Old Nlclc heats Hrs forks at Camels head L O W R E Y Here llelh one who had ln llfe A name of great renown 54 - Cut out to be a preachers wife For lhlS she turned Saints down C O O P E R Annle Ball heard her call And then went far away Wlth many a tear lt happened dear All on a summers day YS W I L L 1 F O R D Thls mald now smgs ln the heavenly cholr A d h th ll th 1 l Xxllheriz Znirallilngaleaclferssaldlos not come ce B323- To put ln lhelr complamts FRENCH D U N I..
