Scdolcvaaddp 70' Tom Kort and Gary Oye, Co-Valedictorians of the class of '61, brought honors to themselves and their school in two scholarship contests. Both became National Merit Scholarship Finalists, and both won Regents' Scholarship. Tom was named to the Regents First All-State Team and received a trophy for having the highest Regents score in the R,V,L, Conference, Gary was named to the Second Regents All-State Team. 'leans Francis Crocker, junior fullback, Dick Brehm, junior center. and Gary Oye, senior end, were selected members of the Republican Valley All-Conference FootballTeam by the coaches of the various teams after the 1960 football season ended. .dmwlu 71136 fu Swami CaSandra Curry Sandra Morrow, Mary Courtright, Mary Jones, Karen Toepfer, Virgie Wibben, Karen Karnes, Donna Wademan, Veldon Nemecek, Dale Gartner, Gary Oye, and Tom Kort were taken to a noon luncheon with Governor Morrison by the Blue Hill Commerce Club. The students, selected by grade averages and I, Q's, were honored for the scholastic achievements of the senior class. Ralph Gray, Wilber Krueger, and E. J. McBride provided transportation for the trip.

Zeafwecf '7aZn- Dag Thirteen Blue Hill students attended the Kearney Inter-High Scholastic Contest on the Nebraska State Teachers College campus at Kearney, Nebraska, on March 24, 1961. The students were sponsored by Mrs. Ralph Gray and Mr. Bill Pearson. Individual ratings were: Marilyn Carper, 80th of 121 in Novice Typing Sandra Corner, 18th of 124 in Biology, 11th of 39 in Art Discernment, 57th of 107 in World History. Myra Haba, 9th of 72 in Standard Foods, 3rd of 74 in Clothing and Textiles Mary Jones, 5th of 83 in Music Tom Kort, 2nd of 117 in English Usage, 6th of 150 in American Government Judith Meyer, 15 of 68 in Typing Advanced, 24th in Shorthand Advanced LaDonna Meyer, 6th of 65 in Penmanship Diane Muhleisen, 87 of 124 in Elementary Algebra, 66th of 147 in World Geography Gary Oye, 16th of 157 in Bookkeeping, 1st of 150 in American Government Kay Rose, 14th of 113 in American History Glenda Sanford, 39th of 63 in Shorthand Novice, 37th of 52 in Art Ability, 7th in 65 in Penmanship Dale Thomas, 30th of 108 in Plane Geometry Virgie Wibben, 57th of 157 in Bookkeeping Duma: 77644414 Nine entries from Blue Hill participated inthe District Music Contest held at Holdrege April 21 and 22. Mary Jones received a superior rating for her flute solo. She was further acknowledged by being asked to perform in the Honors Program. In Boys' Medium Voice, Tom Kort placed with a 2 4. The highest rating given in this section was a 1-. Mary Courtright received a 2f and Virgie Wibben received a 2 in Girls' Low Voice. The judges gave no 1's in this group. Marilyn Carper was given a rating of 2 for her solo in Girls' Medium Voice and for his drum solo, Dick Brehm received a 3+. As in the preceding groupings, no superior ratings were given in either Marilyn or Dick's areas of competition. Becky McSpadden earned a 2 rating in the Girls' High Voice category. Duane Penrose received a rating of 2 for his bass horn solo. The Blue Hill mixed chorus, composed of 42 students, was in competition with twelve other Class C schools. Again the judge awarded no superior ratings. Thus, Blue Hill's choir members felt quite proud with their rating of 2-I-.
