0ur Captain CDR George R. Hooper, USNR Commanding Officer During this six-month Westpac deployment cruise We have travelled some 50,000 miles of ocean, visiting and carrying our flag into many ports of allied nations, besides carrying out our military mission and training assignments. Being your skipper has been pleasurable, principally because of your cooperation, perseverance and loyalty to this command. By virtue of the fact We were blessed with a wealth of skills and abilities, it was only required that We consolidate these resources to form a smooth Working team that produced results that can be peforred to with pride for years to come. Your conduct at sea and ashore was exemplary of our peacetime Navy. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to all of you with best Wishes for a successful future, be it a Navy career defending your country against aggression or a civilian endeavor in this fine country of ours, the United States of America. As the Blue made final preparations for this cruise George R. Hooper, Commander, USNR, reported aboard for duty as our commanding officer. This is his second command, his first being the USS Willett CDE-354D After receiving a Bachelor of Science at the Univer- sity of California and completing midshipmen school at Columbia University, CDR Hooper Was commissioned in March 1943, going straight into action aboard the USS Buchanan, which remained his station for the duration War. At the outbeak of Korea he Was recalled from a four year period of reserve to serve as Operations Officer and later Executive Officer aboard one of the sister ships of this squadron, the USS Walke, and from there he Was transferred, in XO status, to the destroyer minesvveeper, USS Thompson. In addition to his campaign medals earned during action in both World War II and Korea, CDR Hoo- per has been decorated with the Presidential Unit Citation and the Commendation Ribbon. He now resides in San Pedro, California With his Wife and three children. 'I35 days
