Page 10 G A L A X Y 1953 Class Histories We, the Haviland-Scott class of 1953, entered high school with a total of twenty-seven green freshmen in our class. This year we had as our officers: Bud Decker, president: Don Harris, vice-president: and Richard Zielke, secre- tary-treasurer. Mr. Scarbrough was our advisor in both the freshman and sophomore years. The officers for our second year in high school were Bill Hoaglin, president: Wilma McAdams, vice-president: and Barbara Fast, secre- tary-treasurer. Our junior year was our first big year in school. We presented our class play Dotty and Daffy and sponsored the junior and senior trip to New York. This was made possible under the guidance of our advisor, Mr. lay, and our officers: Bill Hoaglin, president: Ben Leeth, vice-president: and Barbara Fast, secretary-treasurer. The 1953 class of Latty High School had a very promising freshman year under the guidance of Mr. Holmes as our advisor and our class officers: Paul Pease, president: LeRoy Mines, vice-president: and Barbara Rowe, secretary- treasurer. We were advancing rapidly in our high school training and before we knew it, our sophomore year was looming before us. This year our officers were Paul Pease, president: Nathalia Stoller, vice-president: and Eloise DeLong, secretary-treasurer. At last we were next best to seniors. Our junior year turned out to be busier than We expected it to be. Our big event for the year was the presentation of our class play, Mama's Little Angel Child. Mrs. Punches was our junior advisor and Eloise DeLong was president: LeRoy M nes, vice-president: and Mary Dunstan, secretary-treasurer. As we began our last year in school, we soon discovered that this was going to be the busiest year of all. Our officers were Bill Hoaglin, president: Dean Williamson, vice-president: and Eloise DeLong, secretary-treasurer. Our senior class advisor was Mrs. Ensign. We presented our class play, Grandad Meets a Pal , decided to put out this edition of the Galaxy, and assisted in ralsing money for the annual junior and senior class trip. This year the goal was Washington, D. C. To make matters a little more complicated, we have a consolidated school this year. Latty and Haviland-Scott have merged to- gether. None of the students have regretted this merger though, and We have been very happy together. LeRoy Mines wills his job at Stoller's Honey House to Dale Gerber. 1953 G A L A X Y Page 23 Class Prophecy As I was wandering around the city of Haviland, Ohio, yesterday, I happened to notice a fortune teller's tent. Since I am of the inquisitive nature, I decided to pay her a visit. It came as a great shock to me when I discovered that the fortune teller was none other than Anna lean Whitaker. Madame Whitaker gazed into her crystal ball, took me into the future to the year of 1973, and told me what my other classmates were doing. She certainly came up with some startling revelations. Dean Williamson is the president of General Motors Corporation. Dean shouldn't take all the credit for this, though. Mr. Iay should get most of it, because it was he who suffered more than Dean in solid geometry. A one-student class gets pretty boring at times. It seems that Bill Hoaglin is running Williams and Hoaglin's Store out of business in Scott. Bill has built a large super market across the street from it and named it William Hoag- lin's Store. Bill's dream has finally come true. Ioan Ensign and Barbara Fast are the two who should be pitied. They're teaching school at BLUE CREEK LOCAL. Oh, I see the school has a new superintendent since I was there. Why, what a surprise! It's none other than Richard Rager! Of course it isn't hard to see how he attained this high position. He certainly spent enough time in the office getting pre- pared for the job. Lou Anne Rhinehalt has just completed a tour of Europe with the Metropolitan Opera. Mary Dunstan is the pianist for this famous group. Mr. Shand may now take a well-deserved bow. The crystal ball reveals that the Cleveland Indians are quite popular with my old class- mates of '53, Larry Finnegan is the newly appointed manager, and Bud Decker is the star pitcher for the team. LeRoy Mines is also with this ball club. He is considered to be one of the greatest short-stops in the business. Mrs. Ensign should certainly be proud of one of her students. Calvin Miller is said to be the greatest poet since Bryant. He won great fame for the Calendar in Rhyme which he wrote for the 1953 edition of the Galaxy. Eloise DeLong runs a fashion shop in New York. None of her creations sell for less than 3100.00 each. Shirley Shultz is employed there as the leading model. Bob Abbott and George Yoh are also in business for themselves. They own the famous BAGY Racetrack in Florida. They race both midgets and stock cars. Paul Pease is supposed to be the best driver on the track. He got his experience from racing around Paulding Coun- ty, no doubt. Doctor Laffin and Nurse Lehman seem to be the only two who are keeping the famous Mayo Clinic running these days. These good people are kept very busy with their many patients. Roberta Stoller now owns a large secretarial school in Fort Wayne. The head teacher in this school is my old friend, Patricia Turner. Ben Leeth has a nice long job ahead of him. He has just been appointed Chief Iustice of the Supreme Court. Ben received his training for this in Mr. Hi1l's Law class. Nathalia Stoller is the private secretary of the famed Mr. Gene Breininger. Mr. Breinin- ger has just bought the Union Pacific Railroad. Richard Zielke is the head of the Agriculture department at Ohio State. One of his best students, Mr. Maurice Myers, has just been appointed County Agricultural Agent. Poor me! It looks like I'm doomed. All my classmates made good but me. The crystal ball fortells that I, Wilma McAdams, am doomed to cook for the rest of my days in the old bachelors' home. Come to think of it, that won't be so bad after all. It sounds like fun. On May 24 the Iuniors Seniors, and sponsors are to leave Defiance on a four day trip to Washington, D. C. via the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. The following are some of the stops: Mount Vernon, Washing ton's Monument, Arlington Cemetery, Congress, White House, Library of Congress, and Ann apolis. Today, most everyone's happy-Why, school's not so bad. 4. Hurrah, school's out for the fair. 5. What? School? We have to go back there? . Mondays seem to be so blue. . Assignments! How much do We have to do? . Latty and Haviland have consolidated and everything seems to be going well. ll. The basketball team should be good. lust so their heads don't swell. 18. Seniors have a class meeting to see about the problems of the year. 30. So the month of September ends and October is finally here. OCTOBER- 1. The juniors decide to give the seniors a trip. 2. The frost has given Blue Creek a nip. 3. Tonight the sophomores are very hearty, because they have a skating party. B. We find Iay keeps a paddle handy. Now Bob and lay get along just dandy. 9. Now all the schedules are settled down, and everyone settles to the year's work with a frown. 13. The first 6 weeks tests are now all over. 14. At Fostoria the seniors pictures were taken today. Now they're hoping the proofs get on their way. 17. Today the seniors' proofs came. Some said, Heck, 1 don't like mine. 20. The proofs were sent back today, and the pictures will come about Christmas time. 20. We decide on the colors and the mascot for Blue Creek today. The mascot is a comet, and the colors are scarlet and gray. 24. Teachers Meeting at Toledo today. Everyone's happy or at least that's what they say. 31. An operetta was given tonight called Rose of the Danube. NOVEMBER- 7. We beat Hoaglin Iackson. Score 44-42. 8. The Comets play Sherwood tonight. The score, in their favor, 49-36, gave us a fright. All those who want to go on the Iunior and Senior trip must, have 512.00 in the office by December lst. 14. We lost both games to Grover Hill tonight. We won't lose the next one without a fight. 19. For the annual today we decided between some names. It turned out Galaxy, which means people with brains. 21. Hurrah for Blue Creek's Basketball team. This vear, the music department again played a very prominent role in the activities of the school. Under the direction of Mr. Shand, the combined musical groups presented a pro- gram at the Community Institute, sang for a chapel program at Otterbein College, and broad- casted a halt hour program at Worthington, Ohio, over WBFD. Lcst October, the high school chorus put on the operetta, Rose of the Danube. ' The Mixed Chorus, Girls' Glee Club, and the Boys' Glee Club took part in the District Mu- sic Contest at Ada. This year, as last year, the Mixed Chorus received a superior ratina in the district contest, and this year the Boys' Glee Club also received a superior rating. The Girls' Triple Trio and the Mixed Chorus both received superior ratinas at the State contests last May. The Boys' Quartette, for the first time, and the Girls' Triple Trio, again as last year, entered the district competition this spring and both groups received superior ratings. ln appreciation for our fine record, the community contributed an almost unbelievable amount to be used for purchasing new choral robes of buraundy and gray for the Mixed Chorus. We may not sing any sweeter, but the organization sincerely Wishes to express their thanks and sincere appreciation to our interested parents and friends. His presence, plus his light fingered ways, and the arrival of the Morton clan created havoc in the household. After the entire household has been quarantined for small pox, Hooley attempts to escape in Miss Dru- silla's nightgown, aided and abetted by Grandad, who is eager for him to start on the money making plans. Grogan, with Angie's cooperation, helps to unravel the complications, Hooley returns to his tramp friends, and grand- father gives up his get-rich-quick schemes. Even while the real estate agent is showing them the house, a body is carried across the stage. Later one of the nieces faints as a mysterious woman advances stealthily toward her. Miss Cathie is found unconscious in the basement beside a freshly dug grave. Finally all the mysterious happenings are solved, and the play ends happily. Since Latty and Haviland-Scott have merged, we were required to obtain a new charter. This society is now in its third year at our school. It is a great honor to be a member of this organization. The officers for this year are Bill Hoaglin, president: Richard Zielke, vice-president: and Wilma McAdams, secretary-treasurer. To become a member of the National Honor Society, one must be outstanding in char- acter, leadership, scholarship, and service. The students are voted in on this basis by mem- bers oi the faculty. Sophomores are eligible to be probationary members but they are not allowed to Wear the pin until they become full members. It a member's grades drop below a Bw average, he is required to return his pin and is dismissed from the society. A candle light ceremony was held when three new members and sixteen probationary members were pledged into the society. This chapel program was presented by the eight sen- ior members. The three new junior members received their pins at this ceremony. We stayed overnight at the Plymouth Hotel, which is just one block from Radio City. Some of the high spots of the tour were the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Radio City, the Bowery, and China Town. We spent two days and one night in New York City and had cr very enjoyable time. All of the students who went will have many fond memories to cherish from our trip to New York City.
