RIGHT ON TRACK Right on frock? What's right on frock? trains? roller coasters? subways? Sure, all of these things are on track, but more importantly, so is Dlountstown High School. Why is DHS right on frock? It's obviousl Just look at the new gymnasium, choral and band facilities, and the auditorium. Students and faculty alike have much — to be proud of. Each time a student goes to a basketball gome or takes a choral or band class, or attends an assembly in the auditorium, he or she is demonstrating a little bit of that Tiger pride. It's not just the new facilities that we have to be proud of, however. Academically, DHS is ranked in the top of the state. We hod 100% passing in both the communication and math skills on the SSAT and Dlountstown High School is the only merit school in Calhoun County. That's a lot to be proud of, and if that's not enough, look in the library, classrooms, lunchroom, and the halls at break and you'll see plenty to be proud ofl What? The students of DHS, Of course! I have had experiences in other schools, and I believe that DHS students score higher on the SSAT because the faculty actually cares whether you learn or not, and they want you to be the best you can 2 3 4 I think that the students here at DHS display a great amount of school spirit. This is shown by the way they go out ond support the team ot the gomes. The spirit here is terrific. vt COMING ON STRONG Gimme o T! II G! E! Rl SI What do you hove? TIGERS! Is ony pep roily complete without this familiar cheer? Of course not, ond the student body responded to it this year with o frenzy of hollers. Dut that's not all that goes on ot pep rallies. No one will forget the tricycle race that the seniors won by o tricycle length) And no pep roily is complete without the singing of the Almo Moter. This is the serious moment of the pep roily that brings the students together for one lost moment before the big gome. Spirit really comes on strong during homecoming week. The bonfire on the Thursday before the gome is the climactic event where students really show their support for the Tigers. Chants ond music fill the oir os students join hands ond run around the bonfire until they ore completely exhousted. After the bonfire, students head to float headquarters to put the final touches on their float. 5 HOMECOMING '87 Thor was then. This is now” wos the theme for Homecoming '87. The gymnasium wos decorated ond everything wos ready. Tension was building in the locker room as the two candidates for queen and the attendants waited for the coronation ceremony to begin. The bell rang and the student body filed into the bleachers. The excited buzz of the crowd was evidence of the suspense that filled the stifling gym. The music started and two by two the attendants ond their escorts filed out. Finally the moment had come. Jennifer and Melanie, the candidates for queen stood, anxiously awaiting the outcome, while the drum rolled on . . . And the winner is . . . Melanie Roberson! 1. Melanie Roberson. BHS Homecoming Queen 2. Senior. Melanie Roberson ond Jason Britt 3. Senior. Jennifer Sandusky and Britt Kearce 4. Senior. Kim Smith and Gront Williams 5. Senior. Kim Peacock and Michael Bryant 6. Gina Frye and Steven Raisbeck 7 My favorite part of homecoming is the way if seems to bring the whole community closer together. The game and the dance are great, but the parade is my favorite part. It brings the old and the young fogeth- GREAT PRETENDERS Oh yes, we're great pretenders and homecoming week is just the time to indulge our fantasies. This year's theme, That was then, this is now” sent us down memory lane to the time when Jack's Drive-In was the favorite spot for teens to hang out and even farther back to the time when a ferry vas the only transportation across the Appalachicola River. (That made courting between Bristol. Blountstown guys and gals a challenge.) Our floats and dress up days coincided with the Welcome Home Day sponsored by the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce. BHS alumni and students celebrated the restoration of the old court house along with homecoming activities. Two queens were crowned: Melanie Roberson was crowned BHS Homecoming Queen and Mrs. Myrtle Blair was crowned Golden Girl's Queen. The town was filled with visitors and dignitaries who joined in the celebration and parade. It was a weekend of excitement and entertainment that brought the school and community closer together. There can't be any harm in a little make-believe now and then, especially if it's all for a good cause. Welcome Home Day and Homecoming seem to be worthy of a little extra attempt to recapture the golden years gone by, while reveling in the glories of the here and now. S In my spare time I find food, shelter, o television, ond allow the world of entertainment to overwhelm me. to DARN THOSE DILEMMAS! The jump from junior high school fo high school takes o lot of adjustment for the incoming freshmen. No longer do they hove first and second lunch with teachers hovering over their every mouthful and no longer do they have a predetermined course load. However, this new freedom can create new problems. The first day of high school for the uninitiated freshman can be a real nightmare. Trying to find that geography doss hidden owoy on the wing can turn into a rat race with the tardy bell. Lunch poses the serious dilemma of where to go and how to get there. Unfortunately, not many freshmen ore old enough to drive and usually walk to places nearby and grab a coke and some crackers before they rush bock to school. When talking about problems, -we can't leave out every girl's worst dream: finding your boyfriend with another girl when he has promised that you are the one and only. This dilemma con lead to serious consequences, none of which need fo be mentioned. The biggest problem I've hod to deal with since school has started is forgetting stuff, like leaving my gym clothes at home and forgetting my jacket in fourth period class when I was in a hurry for lunch. Duf then where would we be without the morning announcements? For example, we wouldn't know that students who mode the honor roll should go by Mrs. McCaskill's room and pick up free tickets to a Chipola basketball game. We wouldn't know thof the FDLA meeting scheduled for Tuesday hod been cancelled and rescheduled for Thursday, or that the Junior class prom committee would meet Thursday after school In room 39. Some of us would never know where our belongings” were, if not for the morning announcements. A pair of Lee jeans and tennis shoes in a paper sock have been turned in to the office. Would the owner please come by and identify them?” And of course there was always the day's menu from the lunch room that answered the really big question of the day. Shall I eat in the lunchroom or risk life and limb running to town and take my chances at the supermarket deli? And then there were those who listened to the announcements with trembling and fear, waiting to see if their names would be called with the infamous report to the office” list. All the offenses of the proceeding day were answered to first thing after the morning announcements, from skipping class to abuse of bathroom privileges. Finally, Ty led everyone in saying the Pledge to the Flag, a daily practice not only required by the state legislature, but appreciated by most students. What else does a student council president need? According to Ty. You've got to be willing to work, and be able to work with others. More importantly, if fakes good student council members, and a good adviser. And DHS has been fortunate in having good members and a good adviser.” Duf one word of caution. Anyone wishing to run for the office need not only be a hard worker, but must also perfect his powers of communication. because his is the voice that gets us all going in the morning. Students start to celebrate. Seniors stort to grin. You know the end is near when ... 166 The are tossed. Proud parents attend Awards Day. THE FINAL DAYS Exams, graduation practice, trips to the lake (for the seniors), more exams, parties (for the seniors), all of these ore included in our Final Days at Dlountstown High School. For seniors these days are filled with sun and fun (for those exempt from exams). Underclassmen, however, spend time cramming for those dreaded finals. But no matter how the days are spent, it's a time for remembering all of those wonderful, crazy incidents that made you laugh and all those touching, sad times that brought tears to your eyes. For the seniors, this time is more poignant because with the Final Days comes the realization that things will never be the same. Scholarships are handed out. Seniors share secrets about the senior trip. 167 CONGRATULATIONS Graduating Seniors of 1988! Ty Edwards Amy Holley Elizabeth Hayward Todd McClellan John Kent Karin Pefrey John Peacock, Jr. Tim Mowrey Tom Smith From The First Baptist Church TAKE TIME Take time to work — It is the price of success. Take time to think — It is the source of power. Take time to play — It is the secret of perpetual youth. Take time to read — It is the fountain of wisdom. Take time to be friendly — It is the road to happiness. Take time to dream — It is hitching your wagon to a star. Take time to love and be loved — It is the privilege of the gods. Take time to look around — It is too short a day to be selfish. Take time to laugh — It is the music of the soul. 168
