Iic£K5 2 tv mi 2 GET READY FOR SOME 50s-STYLE FUN AS BHS CONTINUES TO rock around the clock Learning is only part of the curriculum at BHS. The other side of school life takes more time than the actual studying time. Band, assemblies, cheering, fund-raising, and socializing are as important to us today as they have ever been. 1. Hanging out was a popular 50s pastime and the journalism class shows they can “hangout with the best of them as they pose with this “keen” 56 Chevy. 2. Those Jovial Juniors show off their spirit and their sign at a pep rally. 3. Tiffany ahd Holley rush to get their books between classes, revealing some “keen” pin-ups on their locker doors. 4. The pony tail so popular in the 50’s made a comeback on 50s Day. 5. It's all for a good cause!! Karen splats Greg with a pie on “Dawg-Hunters Day before the game with LCHS. 6. To show you how times have changed, Tom, Chris, Britt, Marc, and Cy show us their new haircuts. Quite a change form the sideburns of the 50s. 7. YAC President Jeff Cloud holds the pig for Coach Daniels to give it a big “smackaroo. Coach Daniels was the lucky teacher who won the “Kiss-A-Pig Contest” which helped raise money for the Cancer Society. 8. The Tigers fall in line as BHS students cheer them on to victory. 9. Amanda and Marissa make a lot of noise at the pep rally. 10. The BHS Spirit Band provides music for enthusiastic Tiger fans. 3 4 that was then this is now! bhs students comment on the fabulous (?) fifties... “I prefer today’s style of clothes rather than the 50s’ style; on the other hand I like the 50s’ music better than some of today’s music.” Michelle Chambers ’’The families were closer, and the teenagers were more disciplined. Sex wasn’t a big issue either.” Jason Britt “There is a lot less racial prejudice. In the 50s there were segregated schools. Today, it’s all mixed.” Elaine McGriff “If I was a teenager in the fifties, I would probably have grease in my hair...” Anonymous “Everything just looked great back then.” Steve Cox “We’ve come a long way, and I’d hate to have to go back and come again.” Sherry Lindsey “Dating was more of a big deal back in the 50s than it is now.” Erik Alford “I wouldn't like to ride in a wagon. I’d much rather have a car. It would be very hard to watch television with no electricity.” Mark McGill “Children today don’t have to go milk the cow in the morning just so he can have a bowl of Fruit Loops.” Tim Mowrey 1 2 3 4 our quest for academic excellence shines in the spotlight As the role of the computer expands, it becomes more obvious that we will need to be familiar with (at least) the very basics of its workings — which is precisely what Intro, to Computers provides. Pictured is instructor Ms. Lawrence assisting Vernita Thomas with her program while several others enjoy computerized video games. A new class at BHS this year is Drama. Scripts and rehearsals and rehearsals and rehearsals are a drama student’s reality. But as we all know, practice makes perfect! The class performed a couple of “swell” comedies this year that left the crowds wanting more! Pictured is Mrs. McCaskill rehearsing with the group and finally Melissa, Maggie, and Tony “in the spotlight.” Typing, filing, adding, and figuring. These are the essentials of office procedures. Instructor Sharon Leonard guides these business students through the maze of the “office” world. Pictured is Ms. Leonard checking out a typist’s work as Carolyn, Kelly, Brenda, Shawnda, and Gay staple booklets. II y a una autre nouvelle classe a I’ecole Francais I, qui est enseignee par Madame Ayers. Hey, what did that say?! It looks almost like another language! Well, that’s because it is another language! It’s genuine French for “Another new class at the school this year is French I taught by Mrs. Ayers.” (Makes sense, doesn’t it.) In French I, students learn the basics needed to build a solid foundation in this une langue romantique. the 1987 homecoming queen and her court could easily be mistaken or teen angels 1. BHS HOMECOMING QUEEN for 1987 — Rebecca Ramsey 2. Rebecca receives a few (!) congratulations from friends, classmates, and family. 3. Does this girl look ecstatic or what?! 4. Homecoming Queen Rebecca Ramsey and her escort Michael DeVuyst. 5. 1st runner-up Karen Lilly and her escort Greg Jordan. 6. Terri Griffin escorted by Phillip Grimes. 7. Sandy Nichols escorted by Todd McClellan. 8. Lori Johnson escorted by Tim Mowrey. 9. Kim Smith escorted by Ty Edwards. 10. Tiffany Edwards escorted by Jimmy Parker. 11. Stephanie Phillips escorted by Jason Britt. 12. Crown bearer Brandon Barbee and flower girl JoAnna Van Lierop. 13. The queen and her Court. Homecoming Queens never go out of style. The BHS gym has been the backdrop for many exciting coronations, and each year the thrill is always there. Students, parents and faculty await the role of the drum, the opening of the envelope and the M.C.’s kiss that tells the lucky girl she is queen. Rebecca Ramsey, a vivacious brunette with a ready smile, is chosen by an admiring student body, and this day belongs to her. 8 9 tigers score a winning homecoming with their touchdown in the 50s 1. The sophomore’s float entitled Way Back When” depicts the gang” at Arnold’s. 2. Terri and Phillip beam as they are complimented on their beautiful appearance. 3. Tracy, Jennifer, and Tracey harmonize to Who Put the Bop in the Bop de Bop de Bop?” 4. Shayee Eubanks relinquishes her title of Homecoming Queen to Rebecca Ramsey. 5. January Jones enjoys a Coke while waiting for the parade to start. 6. Colby the Tiger puts the pedal to the metal. 7. This bass drummer stands at attention. 8. Grand Marshalls Mary C. Bridges and Evelyn Gaskin ride in style. 9. Laura Mowrey gives the crown bearer and flower girl final instructions before the coronation. u mr. and miss sabertoofh jeffery seay and sandy nichols january GREG SMITH AND TERRI GRIFFIN JOHN CONNELLY AND MELISSA POSEY march STEVE COX AND SHERRY LINDSEY THAD RICHARDS AND GINA WALTERS 13 may CHUCK McCRANIE AND TONYA MAYS September SCOTT DANIELS AND TAMMY PHILLIPS june PHILLIP GRIMES AND SHEILA SMITH COREY TOBIAS AND KNEYSE SCOTT October november DEREK NEALEYAND DARA LEE RAY HOWELL AND REBECCA RAMSEY august BEN WILLIS AND KAREN LILLY december LEROY NEALEY AND TONI BATSON calendar couples 1987 IT’S ALL IN THE CANS Pictured below are a calendar couple’s closest friend for the few weeks of their money-collecting — their cans!!!! These cans come in all shapes and sizes and many times are “elaborately” decorated. The container does not have to be a can, however. This year, couples carried their money in everything from cigar boxes to Coke bottles — anything to suit the purpose! honorable mention DEXTER WILLIAMS AND STEPHANIE BRIGHAM 15 now • • • We’ve rocked around the clock, visited with angels, dropped in on a few classes, and looked back at how styles have changed ... but there is one thing that never goes out of style ... and that’s that wild tiger spirit! Join us now as we present BHS! (who else?!) 1. Freshman Tracey Tucker smiles as she heads for class. 2. Greg Jordan shows his Tiger pride. 3. Ty, Roger, Jason and Tony support the team. 4. We’re number 1, say Greg and Jenna. 5. Kim wears her teacher outfit in the yearbook assembly. 6. These faces say it all! Most were too young to drive. Even those few sophomores who have cars are faced with the degrading law that they must park on the ends. As a result, sophomores were left riding the bus or hitching a ride with an older friend, brother, or sister. Since most sophomores would rather ride on the roof of someone's car than ride the school bus, cars arriving at BHS were frequently overcrowded. FBLA does its bit to promote leadership and citizenship through the annual public speaking contest. This year’s theme, “We The People,” was the springboard for contestants to develop their ideas about what it means to be a citizen of this nation. ‘‘We’ve come a long way baby,” said Annette Baker in her speech about the need for progress and achievement. Vanessa Dawson talked of brotherhood and the need for love in our world. Laura Mowrey and Greg Smith shared their views on the responsibility of citizenship, while Alicia Davis, Chuck McGranie and Michelle Davis urged us to become thoughtful, inquiring, responsible citizens. The judges, Dalton Magler, HubChason, Mary Waye Baker, and Dolly Reed listened intently, then declared the winners. Laura Mowrey placed first, Chuck McCranie placed second, and Alicia Davis placed third. BHS Alumnus Ron Mears, an excellent motivational speaker, entertained and inspired everyone at the conclusion of the program. Tracy Cox, FBLA officer, was the M.C. 163 prom '87 THE SPLENDOR OF ARABIAN NIGHTS On April 16, the W.T. Neal Civic Center was transformed into a glamorous “Casbah” complete with desert oasis, silver palm trees, candlelit tables, and mosques. D.J. for the evening was WPFM’S Mike Stone. Stone kept the crowd dancing and in the clouds with his fog machine (cough! cough!). Prom king and queen were Greg Jordan and Terri Griffin. Sandy Nichols and Greg Smith read the Class Wills and Prophecies. The evening was truly one of the best and was every bit as splendorous as its name implied. 165 On Tuesday, May 19, a busload of sleepy but excited seniors left Blountstown enroute to four fun-filled days of Disney World, Busch Gardens, and Wet-n-Wild. While on this memorable trip, the seniors conquered the Python, the Scorpion, and the hottest, wildest, most terrifying ride of all — the bus ride home!!! 1. Carolyn, Lynn, and Rebecca know how to dodge those long lines, 2. Cinderella's Castle! 3. This group wonders, Are we having fun yet?! 4. At the entrance to the Magic Kingdom, these folks look ready to ride! 5. Tammy Phillips attempts to stick her head through an emergency exit in the ceiling of the bus just to get some fresh air. 6. Vernita and Maria compete for the camera. 7. Kim, Melissa, and Karen shop for the perfect key chain. 8. Ready for EPCOT! 9. Rosetta, Derrik, and friends. 10. Laura Mowrey collapses from heat exhaustion on the bus. 11. Has Rebecca been swimming or has she just gotten off the bus? 167 After all is said and done. It Was ... A Veru Good Year Z BLOUNTSTOWN HIGH A MERIT SCHOOL 1985-86; 1986-87 £ mk Made friendships to last JL But when it was over, And we heard the last bell. We stood up and cheered, For a job we'd done well. 168
