This was the year that the long-awaited classroom annex and cafeteria were completed. This was the year that our football team won its second AVC trophy and its first RODEO BOWL, This was the year that the Student Cotmcil, via the installment plan, installed the P, A, System. Too, in our memories are pictures and impressions somewhat vague, suggestions of familiar instances somehow remembered . . . the banging of locker doors . . . the sound of Charlene's bugle. , , the smell of cherry pies baking in the cafeteria , . , the days for making book reports . . . the vigor of the junior high during lunch . , , the scramble for refreshments during the break , , , the smug feeling that's yours if all your homework is finished , . . the last minute cramming for semester exams . . . the pep rallies before the Bristol and Chattahoochee games . . . the sound of Pluto-phones between 2:30 and 3:00 o'clock . , . As the years glide by, this book will be an album of treasured reflections wherein we may see our- selves as we once were, Thus we present the SABER TOOTH of 1955-56, C III 554,41 leak 4 H 77 ?dCd!Z'q 7? Civics, Sociology, World History, and American History are offered each year: American History is a MUST for graduation, , , . School publications are an inte- gral part of the curriculum, For the second time, yearbook staff members earn credit for producing the SABER TOOTH. The TIGER'S TAl..E, the school newspaper, is produced Dy the third period typing class . . , sw 5 I ,Q S frsf?-Q, Y ' uwaumnun K 'UR hm H Mid-morning break brings a rush for light refreshments-- students go to the supply store for cokes, ice-cream and candy bars or to the lunchroom for milk or fruit juice, teachers, to the lunchroom for coffee, fruit juice, or skim milk . . Physical education classes for both boys and girls stress mental and physical health, group participation, and good sportsmanship. Two credits in physical education are required for graduation, juniors and seniors may choose physical education as electives . . . Music classes in both choral work and band are open as electives to all students. grades '7-12. Credit earned in music counts toward graduation. How- ever, most students join the glee club or band for reasons other than credits earned , . . Our commercial depart- ment is perhaps the fastest growing on campus--five classes of typing and one each in short- hand, bookkeeping, and Business English are now being offered, Two of the new classrooms are used for commercial classes. 90 students are enrolled in either typing I or IIg 18 students in bookkeeping . . . Business English is offered to Seniors who plan to go to work or to business school upon gradu- atlong English IV is required of those who plan to attend the University. Shorthand is pro- vided for those interested in the secretarial field . . . From 10:30 to 12:30 more than 800 hungry students and teachers go by relays to the new cafeteria for lunch. Student lunches cost 20:15 teachers, 304. Extra milk is 34 per cup. School life is also composed of many out-of-classroom activi- ties. For example, a vital part of the overall school program is the pupil-improvement of the campus and buildings, Each year both the grounds and build- ings become more and more attractive and colorful. Public performances are en- couraged, Local students are encouraged both to become good performers and good listeners. The F. F.A. boys' quartet participated in district competition, the Glee Club sponsored matinee and evening concerts presented by F. S. U. 's Women's Glee Club--these are but two examples among many, Learning to participate intelli- gently in democratic living is facilitated by voting, cam- ' paigning, and rallies as well as by classroom projects. Students register to vote, and back up the winners--be it a Student Council election, a homeroom election, or a mock presidential cam- paign. fa . Us Q 'z4vW Qg3 '5ff':'4WQ'ff' A conference with parents is another im- portant phase of school life, Regular P. T. A. meetings and the annual Open House held each fall bring many pupils, parents and teachers closer. The daily routine is sometimes given added spice by the visit of a celebrity--many students met Senator Kefauver face to face, many received campaign buttons, and many are expecting autographs forwarded from his Washington office. ,,,g---S11 .22 Traditional events like Homecoming and the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom require a lot of planning and hard work--but the finished product is always worth the time consumed, the energy exerted, and the money spent! School life would not be what it is--ups and downs, joys and sorrows, winning and losing, learning and forgetting, giving and taking--without the nostalgic final acts like erasing marks from textbooks before check- ing them in and cleaning out lockers for the last time during '55-'56 . . . They have only one purpose for organizing -- they are will- ing to assist our librarian, Mrs. Lois Musgrove in mak- ing our library more familiar and useful to the students in our school. Although members aid Mrs. Musgrove in training stu- dent assistants, and co-operate with her on the mag- azine drive and book fair, they also conduct a non- profit service of displaying books for the elementary grades. Each group has its own officers and enrollment of more than twenty members. Their sponsor, Mrs. Musgrove, attended the District Library Conference in Tallahassee, Florida, on December 2-3, 1956.
