Faced with many members of the younger generation who refused to accept the mandates of the High Council, the elders of Bumbles- burg decided to extinguish adolesc- ence at a mental waste treatment plant called college. Attempting to make the children more manageable, a proclamation was held down that stated children attending this treatment plant were to be addressed as students, a title which set the children attending the plant apart from ordinary children and at the same time required good, sheeplike behavior. The goals of the elders were simple. The children would be herded, con- ditioned, and molded into future el- ders. Knowing full well that bringing this many youngsters together would create a serious discipline problem, the elders set up a court system to deal with bad students. What was the student ' s plea, asked the chief executioner and bottle washer, innocent or guilty? The student ' s plea is ' freshman, ' sire. What shall we do? Freshman? To the dogs with the freshman! Things were peaceful at the plant for almost four years. There was little trouble and absolutely no in- dependent thinking. Things were perfect until one day, when an older student was dragged before the chief executioner and bottle washer. What are the student ' s crimes? Your Bottleship, he refuses to att- end any more classes. He walks around in a suit, asking people to ' hire ' him, whatever that means. He even spoke of some role beyond being a student! The chief executioner sputtered, Beyond being a student? What is his plea? He, uh, his plea is ' graduate, sire, said the court jester. Graduate?!! There is no such thing, muttered his Bottleship. Well, then the verdict is guilty. Away vnih him! Cast him into the real world! And from then on, the fate of gradu- ates was assured. MEN ' S SWIMMING 98 WOMEN ' S SWIMMING 99 MEN ' S BASKETBALL The men ' s basketball team, following a 6-8 start that threatened to give the school its first losing sea- son in 21 years, rebounded to win 11 of its last 14 games to post a 17- 11 overall mark and earn a berth in the Pennsylvania Conference play- offs following a two year absence. The Huskies defeated divisional foe Kutztown 70-62 in the first round of the playoffs before losing to eventual conference champion Millersville, 87-73, in the second round. Earlier in the year, the Huskies dealt the Maruaders their- lone PC East defeat, 60-55. The key to the Huskies ' turnaround was a five-game win- ning streak just past the midpoint on the season, along with the maturity of several young players who made major contributuion to the team. During the five game streak, the Huskies outscored their opponents by 15.8 points per game. Following two consecutive losses to Philadel- phia Textile and Kutztown that ended the streak, the Huskies proceeded to put together a run of six straight victories, including the first round of the playoffs, before the season was ended with the Millersville loss. With no seniors on the roster and following injuries to its two co- captaind, juniors Steve Ross and Greg Thomas, Chronister was for- ced to go with a very young lineup. Leading BU ' s offensive attack was sophomore Bill Connelly, who was named to the PC All- Conference first team. The 6-foot 4- inch foward averaged 16.3 points per game to lead four players in do- uble figure averages. Sophomore center Alex Nelcha was next with 13.3 points per game. He was also the team ' s top rebounder with 9.1 per contest. Joe Stepanski, 11.6 points per game, and freshman John Williams, 10.4 points per game, were the other players in do- uble figures. Michael Albright 100 101 WOMEN ' S BASKETBALL 102 WRESTLING 10? WRESTLING Bloomsburg University capped the 1986-87 season, the school ' s most successful ever, with a fifth place finish in the NCAA Division I Championships while Rick Bonomo ended a brilliant career with his third straight national title at 118 pounds. The Huskies completed the sea- son with a 12-7 dual match record, including a 4-2 mark in the Eastern Wrestling League. The team also placed third in both the Pennsyl- vania Conference and EWL Championships. Bonomo, who sported a 23-2 record in his senior season, ended his career with a 125-12-1 mark, three conference titles, three EWL crowns and three national champi- onships. Rocky Bonomo, who was plagued with injuries throughout the season rebounded late in the year to post a 13-4 individual record, including a fourth place fin- ish in the 126-pound division on the national tourney, held at the University of Maryland ' s Cole Field House. He completed his career with a 116-22 record along with three individual titles in both EWL and PC competition. Also helping the Huskies to their best finish ever at nationals were senior Bruce Wallace (190-pound class], sophomore Dave Morgan (150] and freshman Mark Banks (158). Both Banks and Morgan, who lost early in the national tournment, wrestled back in the consolation round to within one match of Ail- American status. Both finished the tournament with 3-2 records. Morgan, a national qualifier for the second consecutive year, ended his sophomore season with a 31-9-1 record, the most victories by any BU performer during the year, and the 150-pound PC title. Banks roun- ded out his first collegiate season with a 23-14-2 mark. Wallace, 27-9 in his final year, also qualified for nationals for the second year in a row. He earned his bid on the basis of a fourth place fin- ish in the EWL championships and was awarded a wild card bid. The team ' s 12 victories this past seasons gave head coach Roger Sanders a 15-year record of 175-72- 3 at Bloomsburg. His overall coach- ing record, in 20 seasons, is 225-90- 3. Vying for the school ' s third na- tional title in four years, the Huskies defeated Trenton State, 2- 1, in the NCAA Division III semi- finals, before losing to the nation ' s No. 1 team, Salisbury State, 3-2, in the finals. Salisbury State proved to be Bloomsburg ' s toughest opponent of the year as the Sea Gulls dealt the Huskies two of their three season losses. Midway through the 1986 campaign, the Huskies fell to Salis- bury State 4-0, ending a 14-game non-losing streak for BU, giving the team a 12-1-2 record at that point. Following that loss, the Huskies won four straight heading into the Pennsylvania Conference champi- onship game against Millersville. The Marauders downed BU, 1-0, to win the conference title and avenge a 1-0 loss suffered at the hands of the Huskies earlier in the season. Five Bloomsburg players scored 10 or more goals for the season as BU outscored its opponents 80-23. Senior Carla Shearer led all performers with 15 goals and 15 assists while Donna Gr aupp added 14 goals and two assists, and Diane Sheilds chipped in with 12 goals and 12 assists. Another senior, Kate Denneny, added 11 goals and five assists as Lynn Hurst recorded 10 goals and eight assists. Goalie Lori Guitson was another key performer for the Huskies, registering nine shutouts and allowing just 21 goals in 21 games. In 1987, the Huskies will be look- ing for a return trip to the NCAA Championships and another na- tional title while also hoping to give Hutchinson her 150th coaching win in her 10th season at Bloom- sburg. He has a 3.7 average and plans to enter the job market immediately. During the course of his college career, he has worked diligently. Studying into the early hours of the morning, preparing well for each and every academic examination to be faced, he neglected the social life that surrounded him. Walking into his first interview, more than slightly nervous, he stutters, hesitates, and is a poor communicator. He mentions his 3.7 to the woman interviewing him. Asked about the activities in which he participated at college, he mentions membership in the profes- sional club attached to his major. He mentions his 3.7. He points to his in- volvement in intramurals in his fresh- man year and is silent. Asked if this is all, he again mentions his 3.7. The interview is over. Although pleased with the cumulative average of the prospective employee, the in- terviewer noticed the lack of good communication skills. Though an in- telligent young man, the graduate had nothing more to offer than any other qualified applicant. Grades. The importance of them must be questioned in a system of education that no longer requires a student to get a well rounded educa- tion. Today, the ability to communicate is essential to survival. Businesses are now stressing the need for em- ployees who are not only skilled in their professional areas, but who are good communicators as well. This forces the examination of our system of higher education, a system which has been reduced to vocation- al training. A central issues is the neglect of that area of study which develops communication skills. It appears as though only an absolute minimum of coursework is mandated to fulfill the needed curriculum requirements. Why is it that writing and verbal communication skills are not stressed at Bloomsburg? There are hundreds of students at BU, if not thousands, who cannot write a simple essay. And should a discussion go beyond the realm of a basic, day-to-day conversation, there are thousands who cannot adequately state what they are attempting to say. It is agreed that the primary and secondary levels of our system of education appear to be failing, but does this mean that the system of higher education, once it accepts a student, is not required to at least attempt to correct the problem? Johnny can ' t read is a commonly accepted phrase in this country. It should be expanded to include write and communicate. Grades can no longer be held as an accurate measure of the in- dividual ' s potential. Though still im- portant, they must be bolstered with good writing and communication skills. Involvement in activities outside the classroom is essential in assist- ing the development of communica- tion and leadership skills. In attempting to find a solution to the problem, we, as graduates familiar with the shortcomings of today ' s college education, must str- ive to correct the problem at the primary and secondary level. Many of us shall soon be considering parenthood. How and what do you want your child taught? The importance of this issue cannot be overstressed. Only by requiring a quality education from a child ' s entry into the system is it poss- ible to ensure a quality education once the child steps beyond high school. 135 Protestant Campus -.36 Psychology Association 137 Program Board Executive Row 1: Lori, Steph, Kerri. Under the old program, journalism classes were scattered over two departments, English and Communic- ation Studies. said John Maittlen- Harris, chairman of the new depart- ment. Students and staff members were confused. With the new proposal, journalism classes are no longer part of the Engl- ish Department. Instead, a journalism sequence is being offered under the new Mass Communication Depart- ment, along with sequences in adver- tising, public relations, film, and telecommunications (T.V. and radio). The idea for the new department had been in the works for two or three years. One of the proponents of the change was Dr. Walter M. Brasch. I never had a feeling that the English Department knew what to do with the journalism classes, Brasch said. Nor was I convinced that they cared that much. The result was that our students were receiving a very mediocre educa- tion in journalism. We had to do something to preserve the integrity of a major program. Maittlen-Harris added having two departments makes it impossible to determine how many Mass Commu- nication majors there were at Bloom- sburg University. It is now estimated that there are over 300. This is far too many for the available staff. It is im- possible to increase the staff under the current budget. In order for the students to receive a proper education, the number of Mass Communication majors must come down. Therefore, the students must have 32 credits earned and a 2.5 grade point average to apply for the major. Approximately 25 to 30 students will be accepted into the major each semester. The transition between programs probably will not be complete for a few years. The department is in the process of seeking approval to add new courses to the curriculum. The proposed courses must first be approved by the department ' s curri- culum committee of the College of Arts and Sciences, It must then pass the BU Cuhculum Committee which mustconsider such things as whether or not there are en- ough library books to supplement the courses and the number of instructors available to teach the classes. Students currently under the old program will be allowed to finish under the guidelines of that probgram. Maittlen-Harris voiced another long- term concern with the old program. There were problems with us meeting the standards of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), said Maittlen-Harris. Out of 300 colleges in America that offer Journalism and Mass Communication programs, only 80 are affiliated with the AEJMC because their standards are so high. Under the old program, BU could not apply. Now that we have the separate department, however, it is a goal we can aim for. In addition to majoring in Mass Communications, Maittlen-Harris en- courages interested students to partici- Robert W. Liddell, Assoc. Prof , Computer and Informa- tion Science Juan J. The purpose of a Mass Communication major is to write, no matter which field you are in, he said. You want to get all the experience you can because professi- onals want students who know how to write. The various media forms have given stu dents the opportunity to learn different styles, techniques, and deadlines. Deb Goodhart 184 Richard E. McClellan, M.S., Lavere McClure, M.S., S. ' ' Superpowers discuss peace Scott Davis Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev emerged from Hofdi House, a white mansion overlooking Reyhjavik Bay, They just ended four hours of unscheduled, stop-the-clock negotiations. Standing beside Reagan ' s limousine, the two superpower leaders exchange a few unsmiling words. They shake hands quickly. Aquino has been looking for a quick, negotiated end to the country ' s 17-year-old guerrilla war. Losses by government troops have been running up. Since March 1986, the govern- ment troops have suffered an average of 20 dead per week, while guerrilla losses have declined. In an attempt to end the war, Aquino has offered amnesty to any rebels willing to drop their weapons. While the two leaders were taking a break from their talks dunng the summit, U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz and Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevar- dnadze met at Hofdi House with top arms-control advisors. Later, it was announced that they were working on an agreement called a historical arms-control proposal , but that too was destroyed when the Summit ended abruptly. Aquino came to the United States looking for support in the guemlla war and for the battered economy in the Philippines. The United States refused to give direct aid, but much of the world is waiting to see if the United States will change its mind. The world ques- tioned, and is still questioning, whether or not the United States gave in to a swap deal. m America hit by drought • ' .  Imtiaz All Taj While We are the World and Band Aid were still m the air, southeastern Amenca was hit by the worst drought of this century. Even now people don ' t real- ize the drought affected 12 States from Delaware to Louisiana, forcing thousands of farmers into bankruptcy. Less than one third the normal rainfall killed a large portion of the region ' s summer crop. The governers of Alabama, Virgina and the Carolinas requested federal disaster relief. The United States Depart- ment of Agriculture estimated that 96 percent of South Carolina s com crop was in poor or very poor condition, along with 68 percent of the cotton and 52 percent of the soybean crop. The drying of hoy and groin left dairy farmers and cattlemen with little to feed their livestock. forcing many to sell their ani- mals at a substantial loss. In July, Maryland and South Carolina lost up to $100 million in corn and soybean crops, forcing about 1,500 farmers out of business. The destruction of the tobacco, peanut, hay, and soybean crops cost up to $140 million of damage in Georgia and North Carolina. The Southeast, which produces almost 40 percent of the country ' s poultry, ex- perienced temperatures in ex- cess of 100 degrees causing 400,000 chickens to pensh in one week. The nation whole- sale price of chicken rose from $.55 a pound to $.70 a pound m one month. The August rains were too late to save many farmers from ruin. The government and farmers across the nation sent supplies and aid to the gnef stricken farmers of the southeast. Hundreds of small farming communities still suffer the ef- fects of last year ' s drought and will do so for many years to come. 195 Controversy rocks White House Scott Davis The White House found itself in hot water as details from the Iran-Contra affair slowly leaked out. The details told of how the White House sold arms to Iran and then gave the money to Nicaruguan Contras to aid m their civil war. 196 The Tower Commission, a special commission set up by President Reagan, was commis- sioned to find out exactly what happened and when. The president claims that he had no knowledge of the diversion of funds from Iran to the Contras. The media, however, was not so sure. The selling of arms to Iran was attacked because it went against U.S. foreign policy. Iran was known to back terrorism and the U.S. had vowed to never deal with a terrorist-backing state. The key figures in the Iran- Contra Affair were all presiden- tial advisors. Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger was believed to have facilitated the arms transfer. Air Force Maj. Gen. Richard Secord was believed to have held a role in the dealings. Secord was an occa- ssional advisor to the Contras. The two men believed to hold the key to the Iran-Contra Affair were National Secunty Council Chief John Poindexter and Lt. Col. Oliver North of the Marine Corps. When called before a in- vestigation committee, both called their fifth Amendment right not to speak. Both men, soon after, were either relieved from duty or resigned. The White House brought back memories of Watergate and the Nixon Administration. Scandal lead the headlines of every newspaper across the country. Some political interest groups called for the resignation of President Reagan. North was compared to Nixon ' s G. Gordon Liddy. The Iran-Contra Affair gues- tioned the validity of the Reagan Administration ' s foreign policy. Publicly not supporting terrorism, the administration was covertly selling arms to a terrorist- backing state (Iran) and sending approximately $30 million to the Contras fighting m Nicaragua. The biggest question to arise from the affair was whether or not the U.S. had used the arms deal as a ransom to free Amencan hostages in Lebanon. David Jacobsen was released from Lebanon in November. His release was overshadowed by the possibility that the U.S. paid an arms ransom. - ' -, 38.. Volcano leaks gas Scott Davis The scene looked straight out of a horror movie. People with skm burned off of bodies. Dead cattle lined the country-side. The stench of death filled the air. Hundreds of injured walk to Wum, Cameroon, to get medical aid. The death and destruction was caused by a gigantic cloud of deadly gas that spewed from the volcanic Lake Nois. The injured were the lucky ones. 1.700 people were killed either instantly or soon after by the poison cloud. Francis Fang, a farmer in the vill- age of Cha, was m bed. He told Newsweek that My wife dropped on the ground, vomiting blood. The children were burning and scream- ing. My wife was dead. I picked up my girls and started walking to the hospital. There were dead people everywhere on the road- so many •-jf ?- that 1 was stepping on them. Veronica Gmbie. 27, was one of five or six people m Nois- out of a population of more than 1,000- who survived. It was so mysterious, so horrible. she said. When 1 woke up in the morning, my five children were dead. My baby was dead in my hands. Dozens of countries sent aid to Cameroon, including 15- tons of medical supplies from the United States. Although scientists differ on the cause of the gas bubble, one theory seems plausible. A andslide eroded a side of Lake Nios, releasing deadly e. ements trapped m lake-bed sediments. Once the toxic gas rose to the surface, a strong wind carried it over nearby vill- ages- killing more than 1,700 people. -«;j lames Cagney, Kate Smith, Ted Knight, and Cory Grant were among the performers to pass away this year. 19 Mets win World Series David Sauter Thanks to one of the best pitching staffs in baseball, a powerful lineup, and a lot of luck, the New York Mets defeated the Boston Red Sox, 8-5, in Game 7 of the World Series to win the world championship of baseball in 1986. It was a classic seventh-game showdown as New York had to fight from behind to overcome a strong Boston team. Ron Darling started the game for the Mets, but was taken out after only four innings as he gave up three runs. Dwight Evans and Rich Gedman con- nected for homeruns in the second in- ning and Wade Boggs singled home a third. Meanwhile, Boston starter Bruce Hurgt pitched for five innings before being racked in the sixth. Keith Hernandez singled home two runs with the bases loaded and Tim Teufel scored on a Gary Carter hit. A brigade of Boston pitchers followed that could not stop New York. The Mets scored three more times in the seventh inning to take the lead, 6- 3. Boston, who last won the World Series in 1918, refused to die. Dv ight Evans doubled home two runs in the eighth to cut the lead to 6-5. But the night belonged to the New York Mets; they would not be refused. Darryl Strawberry homered in the eighth inning and Jesse Orosco singled home to round out the scoring 8-5. Orosco breezed through the final innmg sinking out Marty Barrett for the final out. New York almost never even made it to the seventh game. In Game 6, with the Red Sox up 5-3 and two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning, the mincle season of the Mets seemed shattered. With two strikes on him, Gary Carter singled to keep New York olive. Two more singles followed, then a m d pitch be Bob Stanley, and suddenly, it was a 5-5 game with Mokkie Wilson comming up. Wilson connected with a slow ground boll to first baseman Bill Buckner that seemed destined to bring the third out. But it did not mat- ter. Bucher allowed the boll to roll through his legs and bring the winning run home from second. The dejected first baseman said afterword, It was a helluva one to miss. Indeed it was. Boston looked powerful early m the Series as they rocked New York in the first two games grabbing 1-0 and 9-3 triumphs at Shea Stadium. The Mets responded, though, by taking two out of three games at Fen- way Park to move the Senes back to Shea. And fi om there, they made history winning their second World Series in their 25 year campaign. Bloom News Good evening, and welcome to Bloom News... That greeting could be heard by television viewers in Bloomsburg and surrounding areas throughout the 1986-87 academic year. Bloom News, a half hour newscast produced by the mass communication students, aired live over the local cable channel on Friday evenings. Bloom News began m the fall of 1986 as a class project for Dr. Dana Ulloth ' s Broad- cast Journalism class. Students gathered news from the BU campus, the town of Bloomsburg, and the surrounding areas. Responsibilities aside from collecting news included, editing stories, typing, preparing the television studio in McCor- mick, and operating cameras, lights, and the audio board during the broadcast. In the spring Bloom News continued under the guidance of Mr. William Aciemo. Senior mass communication students Kerry Desmond and Steve Firmstone handled the roles of co-producers and directors, mak- ing sure each show ran as smoothly as possible. By years end. Bloom News became a recognizable name and newscast, offering valuable experience for everyone involved. Joe Monkman oo ► ' i wT , TO THE READER: In my three years as a member of this staff I have encountered many questions about its existence. The major question asked by most students about this publication is Why is it called the ' Orbiter ' ? To that 1 respond, It is not called the Orbiter, your yearbook is called the OBITER! I then continue by reciting something that was told to me soon after I joined the OBITER staff. The word Obiter comes from the latin, obiter dicta, meaning something said in passing: an incidental observation, a reflection. This yearbook is just that, a record of the obser- vations made while attending Bloomsburg. We, the OBITER staff, have prepared for you. the graduates of Bloomsburg, a record of life at Bloomsburg University. I would like to take the time to thank a few people who were instrumental in preparing this book. Melissa... thanks for everything, you had put up with a lot, from the ravings of o lunatic to the pressures of deadlines and bills. I have good feel- ings about turning the helm over to you and your staff. I know you will take this publication far. Good Luck!!! Maria. Caroline, Michelle, and Debbie... for sticking with it to the bloody end. You guys deserve a hand, thanks! Steve and Donna and the staff at Merin.for all your help and support.
