1869 was the year that the Institute was recognized as the Bloomsburg Literary Insti- tute and State Normal School for the Sixth District. It also marked the opening of Institute Hall, now called Carver Hall. As students and faculty were celebrating the formation of the State Normal School, a gold spike was being driven into the final section of track in Promo- tory, Gtah to commemorate the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. 1856 saw the Bloomsburg townspeople join together to secure a charter of incorpora- tion. The Academy was reorganized and nanned the Bloomsburg Literary Institute. In the meantime, John Brown ' s abolitionists be- gan their fight against slavery in Kansas. A fight which grew into the Civil War. As North and South began their struggle, BLI was also struggling, but showing great promise and con- tinued growth. -• 1 r — . •. ;
