This grant was given to 18 non-profit organizations to establish a closer relation- ship between the U.S. and Japan. The program for Japanese Awareness Week was conducted by the Advisory Com- mittee to International Education. Various workshops were provided for student inter- est. Nanae Momiyama presented Japanese brush painting, Atsushi Moriyasu illustrated kite making, and Saeko Ichinohe performed a Kabuki dance. Other workshops included: flower arranging, a film festival, lectures by an International Business and Trade sem nar, plus a Japanese dinner organized by Mrs. Murphy in the Commons on Thursday. JAPANESE AWARENESS WEEK Twenty-Four Backpacking, rock climbing, and cross country skiing are only three of the numerous activities offered by the Quest Program. The idea behind Quest is to let peo- ple get away from the bustle of col- lege life by putting them into the beauty of a rustic, wilderness setting. Little or no experience is needed. All that IS required is some ambition, patience, and a lot of endurance to climb that rock face, ski to the top of the ridge, or carry that backpack through our country ' s wilderness areas. Weekend trips involving two over- nights were introduced this year for backpacking and canoeing. Other programs by Quest are a canoe course and sailing course, both offered for credit, and the Up-Reach Program for in-coming Freshmen. A totally new program, the Summer Quest Semester, involving 12 weeks of school, 14 credits, and living out in the open is being offered this summer in hopes that it can be continued each year. v; V QUEST Twenty-Five Greek Week, a series of competitive events between sororities and fraterni- ties took place at BSC during he week of April 29-May 6. The week was trig- gered off witfi Olympic Day wt ich tests the athletic ability of the Greeks. A Ham- burger Eating Contest, Chariot Race, Tug of War, Games Night and a Road Rally kept the spirits of the Greeks roll- ing The highlight of the events, Greek Sing brought Greek Week to an end. Instead of athletic abilities, the fraterni- ties and sororities demonstrated their musical talents to a largeaudience in Haas Auditorium. The results of the competitions put Phi lota Chi in first place over the sorori- ties with Sigma Sigma Sigma in second and Chi Sigma Rho tied with Lambda Alpha Mu for third. Delta Pi reigned as the champions of Greek Week for the fraternities with Tau Kappa Epsilon sec- ond and Sigma lota Omega third. The high honor of Greek Man and Woman was given to Joe Bell of Delta Pi and Susan Grady of Delta Epsilon Beta, respectively. Twenty-Six GREEK WEEK Twenty-Seven SIBLING ' S WEEKEND Twenty-Eight FIREFALL Twenty-Nine More than 300 graduating seniors and under- classmen gathered in Haas Auditonum on April 29 for the 10th Annual Awards Convocation, honor- ing special achievement in academics and extra- curricular activities. These plus 1000 more observed as guest speaker John F. Gerrity, a for- mer BSC student now employed by the FBI, deliv- er ed the opening address on Success . Bruce DeHaven, the chairman of the Awards Committee, got the presentations under way by presenting awards for academic achievement and to seniors elected to Who ' s Who. The Director ' s Awards and CAD Awards, as well as service plaques, life-time community activities cards, and service certificates were distributed in appreciation for service to BSC by seniors and underclassmen. Life-time athletic passes and special recognition of athletes and rec- ognition of outstanding achievement in various fields, including Music, Biology, English and Chemistry were distributed. Also, several scholar- ships were announced including the 1st Annual Sharon Trapazzano Scholarship. President McCormick made four special presen- tations: Certificates of Appreciation to three people who contributed outstanding services to BSC and the 1st Annual Outstanding Senior Award honor- ing excellence in scholarship and leadership. This special award was presented to Joseph Mattivi, a senior majoring in French and Spanish. Following the convocation, a reception was held in the Kehr Union for family members and friends of award winners. This jamboree featured performers familiar to us at BSC, such as, Artie Traum, the Henries and Jonathan Ashe; as well as some new sounds pro- vided by the Medicine Band, John Crum and Company, and Spiritwood, a group specializing in children ' s songs. This annual event provided ample time to sit back and relax, while soaking up some good, old, bluegrass music. FALL JAMBOREE Thirty-five PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND Thirty-Six ROMEO AND JULIET Thirty-Seven Thirty-eight Wednesday night, October 18, set the mood for BSC ' s 51st Homecoming with fabu- lous Harry Chapin. Our own Toby Loyd per- formed as the warm-up act, Chapin ' s audi- ence participation songs and famous line You can always count on the cheap seats! had the enthusiastic concert goers jumping from their seats. Friday night ' s pep rally and bonfire had everyone rallying together in anticipation of Saturday ' s game. Kelly McDonald captured the title of 1978 Freshman Sweetheart, as the Millersville Marauder was burned in effigy and fireworks lit up the night time sky. The theme The Animated World of BSC was brought to life Saturday morning with the judging of the dorms and Parade floats. With a halftime score of 7-7, the winners of the vari- ous competitions were announced. Schuylkill Hall received first place for dorms, while the joint effort of TKE and XEP stole the award for the best float. TKE scored a second victory as their representative, Gayle Weisenfluh, was pronounced Homecoming Sweetheart for 1978. The second half of the game was the highlight of the day resulting in a 10-7 Husky victory over Millersville. The roasting of the Marauder was justified as the crowd roared their approval of the score. The Husky Singers, Concert Choir and Women ' s Choral Ensemble rounded out the festivities with their Sunday night Pop ' s Con- cert ending a truly animated weekend. By 10:00 PM Sunday, $9,500 were raised and 51 exhausted but triumphant danc- ers were left to count down the final seconds of the grueling 50 hour event with a standing room only crowd. Several prizes were given to the best dancers, but all those who participated were cheered as winners. i ' mfir ' mL.m DANCE MARATHON Forty-three B.S.C.C. The festivities of Renaissance 79, April 27-30, began inside the Kehr Union on Friday due to ram. However, on Saturday, the fun was carried downtown and spirits were brightened with music by Carolyn Odell, Orrin Star and Gary Mehalick, the Green Grass Cloggers and their musical group Jubilo, and Jim McHenry. Other activities of this April weekend included a fiddling contest held between the performers and a children ' s concert featunng mime Whit McGlaughlin. Merchants displayed their hand- made arts and crafts to those interested, while the hungry picked from the selection of foods available. The Jamboree ended with a concert by the Toby Loyd Band in Carver Hall featuring BSC ' s own Toby Loyd and his band from his home- town in New Jersey. A fitting close to Jamboree 79. A nuclear accident at TMI subjected local residents to low levels ot radiation in addition to a crash course in nuclear power and a new vocabulary consisting ot words such as meltdown, fission, core rods, and the china syn- drome. Metropolitan Edison Co of Reading had owned Three Mile Island since 1906 What was once a woodland and a farm- field for corn and tomatoes was now the site of a $700 million dollar nuclear power plant. At first, the plant seemed like a dream come true The local residents welcomed it since the nearby Olmstead Air Force Base had closed With the high pay at Three Mile Island, men could earn between $25,000 and $35,000 a year. No one was nervous about the technological giant that took up residence on Three Mile Island Unit II and Unit III each had a reactor with a core of 36,81 6 fuel rods containing pellets of unanium oxide. The reactor produced heat by nuclear fission Pumps push water, heated by the reactor, to two towering steam generators. Inside the generators, the heat from each of the reactor ' s pressurized water loops was exchanged through tiny tubes to a second independent water loop that produces steam The steam then drove tur- bines which turned generators producing 880,000 kilowatts of electricity The energy was supplied to 346,000 residents of Berks, York and Lebanon counties On March 28, at 4:07 a,m,, a red flashing light burst the dream bubble In Unit II. the signaling light announced to plant engineers that there was a possible radiation leak. However, it was not until three hours later that the leak was verified and a state of emergency was declared. The public remained ignorant ot the whole episode until 10 am,, 6 hours after the red warning . At 12:45 p,m,, Don Curry, a Metropolitan Edison spokes- man, stated, The plant is cooling down in an orderly manner with no consequences to the public Even as Curry spoke, the company deliberately vented radioactive steam into the atmosphere The steam came from water that was pumped into the reactor ' s hot core in hopes of cooling it down. The steam was then siphoned into holding tanks where the pressure from the steam rose to dangerous levels. If the tanks were not vented, they could have exploded, spewing pieces of TMI and radioactive steam into the air. Later that afternoon, it was learned from the Nuclear Reg- ulatory Commission that the steam problem resulted from the core being hotter than expected. Some of the rods had rup- tured and partially melted An employee mistakenly shut off the reactor ' s cooling system for a few crucial minutes after the red light flashed As a result, the temperatures of the reactor rose and damaged the rods Day 2, March 29, low level radiation continued to escape from the plant as federal officials announced that it was the most serious nuclear accident in American history A statement was made by Jack Herbein, vice president of Metropolitan Edison, Herbein stated, We didn ' t injure any- body, we didn ' t overexpose anybody, and we certainly didn ' t kill anybody. Two days later he also announced that four --J ' :«?- ' r workers had been overexposed to radiation. The NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) was finally told that there had also been a chemical explosion in the plant after the initial incident at 4:07 am It was revealed that this chemical explosion is what caused the core to overheat which in turn caused the build-up of radioactive steam. Early on March 30, new bursts of radiation spouted into the atmosphere as Metropolitan Edison still insisted that everything was under control It was on this day that Gov. Richard Thornburgh evacuated small children and pregnant women within a five mile radius of the plant. Thornburgh said that there was no immediate danger, yet, he closed local schools, colleges closed, and people within a 1 mile radius were advised to stay indoors The effects of low level radiation, or radiation of any kind to a Penn State professor is a 21st-century threat to a 19th- century culture, The damage occurs when radiation takes one or more electrons away from an atom, creating electrically charged ions Ions are particles that can drastically alter cells and tis- sues The most dangerous type of damage involves muta- tions in DNA, the genetic material of cells The effects of the radiation expelled by TMI will not be completely understood for approximately 20 years, when the offspring of the present residents are born and when the possible cancer cells from radiation begin to show Late in the afternoon of this third day, federal officials raised the possibility of a meltdown , the ultimate nuc lear disaster It was also announced that a bubble of what seemed to be steam had formed inside the reactor, prevent- ing cooling water from reaching the core Attempts to remove the bubble could clog the cooling systems, creating a sudden rise of the temperatures in the core, causing a meltdown Officials then revealed that the bubble was not steam but Two-Hundred-Sixty hydrogen The hydrogen bubble complication was a situa- tion that the scientists had never imagined The hydrogen was termed when water used to cool the reactor came in contact with the intense heat ot the reactor and its metal parts. As the water flooded the reactor chamber, it broke down into its components of hydrogen and oxygen. Removal attempts could only be based on theory Levels of hydrogen between 4 and 6 percent is considered dangerous, the level in the reactor was already at 2 percent One theory, which was the one later used, was to build a recombinder from lead bricks Gas in the containment build- ing would be pumped into the recombinder and returned to Its liquid state of water The radioactive water would then be placed in storage containers and properly disposed March 31 yielded warnings of a possible evacuation of a 1 0-20 mile area downwind of the reactor. As a safety precau- tion, as many as 630,000 could have been evacuated Ironically on the first of April, April Fools Day, news pro- grams announced that the possibility of a meltdown was very slim and that everything was still under control. Fortunately this was not an April Fools trick, however, a hydrogen cloud still hung in the reactor chamber as the warnings of a possi- ble evacuation persisted Confident in their theory, the scien- tists and nuclear specialists began the recombinder No evacuation was put into operation as the nation and espe- cially the residents in the 10-20 mile radius went to bed, nervously awaiting the outcome A slight sigh of relief was issued as officials stated that the hydrogen bubble was slowly dissipating April 3 also brought news concerning the long range effects of the radiation Reports of cancer and leukemia were heard on radios and television news programs Harold R. Denton, operations chief of the NRC, estimated that It could be 4 years before the plant was decontaminated, overhauled and placed back on line. A cold shut down was planned for fvlay 2 Unit II began to cool down as it breathed its last few nuclear breaths TMi was not a total disaster, in fact, there are many rea- sons to be thankful for this little surprise. The public received a crash course in nuclear power and energy. Terms such as fission, rods, megawatts, millirems and meltdowns became a part of everyone ' s vocabulary. The public also became talented in searching through conflicting reports for the possible truth. Metropolitan Edison and the NRC rarely agreed on the facts News of radiation leaks and potential dangers usually reached the public after considerable time had passed from the moment of discov- ery No immediate threat was announced yet pregnant women and small children were evacuated while others found themselves behind closed doors and locked windows At the time of the hydrogen bubble, Metropolitan Edison offi- cials announced that the bubble was small while the NRC said, Noway. Aiding the entertainment field, Johnny Carson found a new source of material for his opening monologue Saturday Night Live also jumped at the chance to use TMI for the sake of comedy It was announced that Saturday Night Live from Harrisburg would not be seen while in the background there was a picture of the nuclear reactor. The satirical show con- tinued with a benefit t o raise money for a new state capital of Pennsylvania and a 20 minute skit called the Pepsi Syn- drome . The film industry became somewhat of a prophet since the release of the China Syndrome came two weeks before the Harrisburg incident At the Ventanna power plant , a fictionalized nuclear plant, the plant suffered from mechani- cal as well as human errors which partially exposed the core, melting rods, and coming precariously close to a meltdown What really stunned movie goers was a statement made by an employee at Ventanna to Jane Fonda, playing a news reporter What almost happened at Ventanna could render an area the size of Pennsylvania uninhabitable, the official stated, not to mention the cancer that would follow later At BSC the news at 6 and 1 1 p m. became one of the most popular shows Students who lived in the Harrisburg area lived day to day waiting to hear what was happening next. Friends and roommates were all involved in TMI wondering if their roommates or friends would have a home to go home to. Students began to realize the actual seriousness of the sit- uation as meltdown and evacuation warnings were announced and phone lines became jammed In Harrisburg a voluntary evacuation was taking place. Approximately 50,000 to 60,000 people left their homes, at least for the initial weekend, while others stayed at home and hoped for the best Pedestrians scrambled for shelter Doors and windows slammed shut Phone lines jammed. Traffic thickened in the streets, bulging with baggage Stores, banks, and schools were closed Children were shut inside, scared and crying while their parents nervously reassured them. Busy signals were heard from the phones of airline and auto-rental agen- cies Radios blurted out just-in-case evacuation instruc- tions telling residents to get together some bare essentials like clothing, blankets, medication, and to keep a pair of glasses on a table by the door. The T-shirt industry also picked up on the TMI situation with T-shirts saying, I survived Three Mile Island, and Hell no I don ' t glow Employees for the plant also had T-shirts proclaiming I strive to save Three Mile Island, with a back message, Up With Nuke Power Wether the accident at TMI has permanently shut down nuclear power as a form of energy is yet to be known. One fact IS for sure, groups opposed to nuclear energy now have the TMI situation to support their theories when they ask Was Three Mile Island a dream or a nuclear nightmare? To retell the year, wittiout distortion, without an over- dose of hindsight, without creating a past that never was finding the important putting a year into a few short par- agraphs . . , Over five thousand people jammed into this campus, this experience, this year. And each of us so differ- ent in our perspectives. All of this a long winded introduction (excuse ' ?) for what follows: a journey through the issues of campus life, that affected all of us even if we never stopped to examine them. The pictures and captions in this book tell who did what and when, how many games the team won etc . and there ' s no point in retelling that when there is so much more that can ' t be put into a picture. This was not a good year for campus issues or students ' reactions to them. Issues which affected each student, like academic advisement, administrative search warrants, drink- ing-on-campus etc., were routinely ignored. Only the GAD- FLY (BSC ' s very own underground paper) remained a con- stant advocate for change. CGA seemed unwilling or unable to address the issues. And the CAMPUS VOICE (except for one excellent series of articles on administrative search war- rants) seemed to be unaware that the issues existed or per- haps hopeful that they would simply go away if ignored long enough Possibly the biggest issue of the year was the proposed CGA shuttle bus, which was designed to alleviate transporta- tion problems for off-campus students and commuters. The plan was approved by a campus referendum, despite the fact that the CAMPUS VOICE failed to print any articles prior to election day Soon after its passage the plan fell under criti- cism by numerous individuals on CGA An open meeting that resembled a contest of political game playing, more than anything else, was held, at which time the plan was vetoed by CGA and forgotten Few would argue that the plan was flawless. But at the same time, the plan ' s opponents never really considered improving the plan, instead, their objective seemed to be killing the idea in any form The next big issue of the fall was the introduction of a draft of the Student Life Division ' s off-campus party policy. The draft detailed plans to bnng students before the cam- pus judicial board if they were caught having a party down- town. (It may have been mere coincidence that the draft looked like something left over from the days of Harvey Andruss and en loco parentis ) Fortunately, there was enough student outrage that the draft was quickly with- drawn. We only wanted to get feedback, stated one administrator. Hopefully, they received all of the feedback they wanted. After all, the U.S. Constitution (contrary to pop- ular belief) does not end its jurisdiction at Lightstreet Road. CGA fell into the role of a bank for clubs after this and for the most part remained silent on issues relating to student nghts Or occasionally, they engaged in debate over the late distribution of agendas and meetings Some members of Two-Hundred-Sixty-Four CGA complained about a lack of coverage in the CAMPUS VOICE, when they should have been doing something to be covered . . ., but, there were a tew good things, like aiding the town in purchasing a new fire truck, and the passage of funding for the Family Planning Center (even if one adminis- trator did argue it would encourage promiscuity). Unfortu- nately, the good things seemed few and far between. The Commonwealth Association of Students flourished statewide and struggled on the local campus. A game of musical chairs among the leadership positions served to undermine their effectiveness. Nearly 700 students were reg- istered to vote, but most of them turned up as missing per- sons on election day. Call me Dick , Thornburgh became Pe nnsylvania ' s new governor, bringing good news for the students of Pa. ' s State College and University System. In January he would propose a budget calling for no tuition increases. CAS announced their support and conducted a fair day Lobby Conference to promote its passage in the House and Senate. The winter months came and drug on, cold and snowless, putting a damper on nearly everything. CGA elections were held and proved more lively than anything else during those months. Unlike last year when more than half of the candi- dates for offices were unopposed, most of the offices were hotly campaigned for. Rather surprisingly, Willard Bradley was elected CGA president, becoming the first black to hold that position ever And also proving that the racist remarks often scrawled on bathroom walls around the campus are the work of a sick few Bradley promised efforts to restruc- ture CGA to increase its effectiveness and also to promote greater interaction among whites and blacks at BSC Both of these seem too difficult to obtain, but are desperately needed. The last burst of student activism came in April when CAS, the GADFLY and the Alliance of Student Voters joined forces for a Student Rights Awareness Day. The effort to inform stu- dents of both campus and state and national issues affecting them met with mixed results. But even so, it served as an excellent starting point in changing campus policies and pro- moting understanding of issues such as the draft and nuclear power It was the latter which grabbed the attention of many. Three IVIile Island was a living nightmare forcing many to wonder if they would see loved ones or home again. But even when the danger at TMI receded, the nightmare contin- ued as workmen continued building a new nuclear menace near Berwick, approximately 20 miles from BSC. It ' s some- thing to think about, especially freshmen and sophomores who will still be here when the reactors come alive. And for those planning to stay in Bloomsburg after leaving school That was the year, or my year. The football team improved, basketball didn ' t, the Kinks put on a concert at BSC, the Jamboree was held downtown, Toby Lloyd took his first steps to fame and fortune (I hope) . but you can find all of that on other pages in this book, captured in photographs that say it better than I could have. On election day, Jerry Rubin showed up to talk about the me generation and the 60 ' s. Even the most faithful know the 60 ' s are dead with weeds growing on its grave. The me generation stumbles forward C?) toward suicide and the 80 ' s loom ahead. That was the year in review. Two-Hundred-Sixty-Five PATRONS L. R. As edi- tor, I soon learned the secret origin of the year- book. As surprising as it seems, the yearbook comes from many long nights, early mornings and deadlines. Many times during the past year, I pondered what had gone wrong. Why the long hours ' ? Why the panic stricken deadlines ' ? Other years, I had missed these frustrating times, never realizing just how much is actually left up to the editor in the end. Trying to compile all of the year ' s events into 272 pages was not an easy task. And, as I soon found out, B.S.C. is filled with possible editors, those students who know exactly what should not, or, more importantly, what should be put into the book. Now that the end is here, I can only hope that my attempts to capture the essence of 1978- 79 here at Bloomsburg have been at least some- what successful. However, despite any hardships, I must admit, this has been a very enjoyable year for me, thanks to everyone on the OBITER staff. They ' ll never know just how much all their time, effort and humor was appreciated. Carol, thank-you for all your ideas while the book was still pretty much in the planning stages. Without these suggestions, there would have been nothing on which to build the book. And Tim, I hope we ' re still friends after all we ' ve been through together. Your photo contrib- utions most definitely helped make this book what it is today. To the rest of the darkroom crew, all I can really say is thanks for lending your talents to this book. My deepest thanks go to JoAnn, Joan, Todd, Cathy, Tom, Scott and Kathy. Without you, this book would never have become a reality. Last, but not least, thank-you Craig for keeping us from bankruptcy. You knew, or at least found out soon enough, that I have no mind for business matters and I appreciate everything you did in that department. Special thanks go to Rick Piatt who is responsible for the artwork; to Ellie Hatch who compiled the information in the sports ' section; to Mr. Hoffman, my advisor, who gave me all the backing and support I most desperately needed; to Vince Lynott of Taylor Publishing for calmly answering all emergency calls from the OBITER office; and to the people of the Kehr Union who always came through when I frantically requested assistance. Best of luck to JoAnn and Todd, next year ' s co-editors. I hope they don ' t become too discouraged when they come to the realization that putting a yearbook together involves much more than typing and layouts. During our years at this educational institution we grew to a new age. We formed our personal and social selves and underwent many changes. We witnessed and were part of a new age of stu- dents ' rights and an age of education. We formed the foundation for our future. My wish is that the 1979 OBITER has realistically captured a part of this spirit. Thank-you for making this yearbook possible.
