Steve Eachus, the running-machine of the Huskies, was constantly breaking course ecords. Though the team lost a majority of their meets, Steve was the individ- ual winner in all of them. He was the Penna. Conference champion as he crossed the finish line in 29: 1 5 at Mans- field and placed third in the NCAA Division II Champion- ships held in Illinois and came in 61st in the Division I competition in Washington. Eachus was joined by a fine group of teammates including Junior Mark Bond and Senior Jeff Brandt who consistently placed in the meets. Other performers such as Stan Cohen, Bob Kantner, Kevin Foster and Rob Win- tersteen always were threats in the dual meets. The defense was the strong point of the team only letting up 22 goals in the 1 1 games, for a 2.2 goals against average. The offense tallied an average of 3.8 on their opponents. The Husk- ies were the Eastern Division champs in the Penna. Conference with a three and one record, Mailey led the team and conference in the scoring department with 16 goals and set the school record with the same figure. Teammate, Mike Lay- field, booted in 7 goals for the Huskies and was second in the team list in scoring, Horst Bernhard was the chief goal-keeper this season letting up only seven goals with 106 saves, behind good defense. Offensively, the team scored 56 goals to their opponents 10, showing a powerful and strong winning margin. In post season play Bloomsburg did not advance in the Eastern College Athletic Confer- ence as they lost to Muhlenberg College 3-0 and also lost the Penna, title to Lock Haven State 2-0. All-Conference selections from the Eastern Divi- sion included four members of the team, sopho- mores Jim Mailey and Toby Rank on the front line and Juniors Tim Delp and Horst Bernhard in the goal. 74 But now I see that the young people — all those fine athletes growing up — have discovered what soccer means. — Pele — Record: 10-7 BSC GPP. 4 Scranton Univ. 3 4 Shippensburg 4 Wilkes College 3 Millersville 1 7 York College 1 9 Lycoming College 2 9 Juniata College 1 Kutztown Penn. Conference champions Andy Cappelli (167 lbs.) and Tony Caravella (150 lbs.), enjoyed a tremendous season as they compiled an 11-3 wrestling mark. The only BSC team to be nationally ranked in NCAA Division I standings, the team fell only to Division I teams Cal. Poly, and Penn State and to Division III University of Buffalo. The team finished third in the Penna. Conference only one point behind Slippery Rock who finished second to team winner Clarion State. BSC had two winners in their respective divisions and captured two third place spots, one fourth and two sixth places. In the Eastern Wrestling League Championships, which were held at Bloomsburg, the wrestlers finished in third place behind Cleveland State and three-time cham- pion Penn State. The Huskies ' season was a disap- pointment this year as they got off to a tremendous start with an 8-4 record early in the year, but then slipped to a 10-10 record and then finally winning their last four contests. Coach Charles Chronister aban- doned the JV program midway through the season to get more of the freshmen up into varsity ranks. To the college ' s surprise, freshmen such as Tim Beish, Mark Cable and Don McCann, added excitement to the last half of the season and helped the Coach glimpse his potential for future years. Two of the most exciting games were against the Univ. of Scranton, and Wilkes College. Both were hard fought up till the final buzzer. McHale, discovered that Shake- speare does not necessarily have to be Elizabethan. From cos- tumes, to set, to audience seat- ing, this play was very contempo- rary. The characters were cos- tumed in part Elizabethan, part mid-1970 ' s. The simple set structures were magnificent and the performance concluded with an apt and quite humorous cur- tain call. Probably the most inno- vative aspect of the production though was the theatre-in-the- round seating arrangement on the Haas stage, allowing the audience an ideal view of the actors. The festivities began on Wednesday evening with a concert presented by the Outlaws in Nelson Fieldhouse. Thursday was Vaudeville night with skits presented by various campus groups and movies of the early days at B.S.C. Joann Ravina was announced as the 1977 Freshman Sweet- heart. The spirit grew during Friday night ' s pep rally and bonfire. A dazzling fireworks display served as the evening ' s grand finale. The residence halls were enthusiastically deco- rated in nostalgic manner depicting this year ' s theme When It All Began. Montour ' s old-fash- ioned movie house stole first place while Nor- thumberland finished second. The floats in Saturday morning ' s parade were done in equal fashion. Phi lota Chi and Sigma lota Omega grabbed first place, followed by the Maroon and Gold Band. This year ' s Homecoming Sweetheart, announced during football halftime ceremonies, was Junior Lynn Cathers, represent- ing Columbia Hall. The only disappointment of the weekend was the 20-7 defeat to West Chester Rams on the foot- ball field. The celebration ended with an entertaining Pops Concert presented by the Husky Singers, Concert Choir and Women ' s Choral Ensemble. 123 !24 125 Jamboree 77 Stephen Baird . . . street- singer . . . Over 120 dancers entered the mara- thon beginning at 8:00 pm Friday, and ten couples and thirteen singles were still dancing by 10:00 pm on Sunday, raising $9,000 for the Columbia County Diabetes Association. At the end of the event, Doreen Rich- ards and Joe Cioffi were designated best dancers and Kathy Swartz and Matt Reed, most entertaining. Individual Sixties dance winners included; Kathy Swartz (limbo); Bob Shields and Kim Delp (mashed potato); Elyn Rysz and Ed Houck (twist); Liz Gal- lagher and Kathy Kaufman ()erk); and Sharon Swinehart and Mike Melinko (jit- terbug). First prize for raising the most money for the 50 hours went to Tom James and Vicki Flick. 127 This year witnessed a flurry of activities spon- sored by Kehr Union Program board. Led by Tom Lockner, this group planned a full schedule of big- ger and better movies, dances, coffeehouses and special events than ever before, causing a surge in attendance. Dances are always popular and this year was no exception. Some of the year ' s outstanding coffee- house performances included Jonathan Ashe, Michael Cooney, Andy Robinson, and Carolyn Odell. Casino nights. Nights at the Races, Liar ' s Club and Hollywood Squares added variety to weekends. Especially commendable was this year ' s line-up of movies including such greats as A Star Is Born, Rocky, Slapshot, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo ' s Nest. 129 131 Awards Convocation pL V d il :f V 1 ' 133 134 135 Jan Aagaard Jeanne Adams WilliamAlpaugh III Gary Andrews Gary Abdo Ronald Adelberg Rose Altemus Carol Antonetti Jacqueline Acunzo Robert Albrecht, Jr. Carol Althouse Brian Appleton Barry Adams Carolyn Allen Kathryn Anderson Deborah Arrowood 138 Carolyn Artman Paul Austin William Ayres Beth Bachman Susan Artz Donna Avalos Donna Azar Perry Baer Phyllis Ashenfalder Mark Avellino Nancy Azar Dale Baker Pamela Atteridg Donna Axelrod John Bachert William Bailey 139 Mary Balaban Linda Balliet Evelyn Balint Joanne Bariek Cynthia Barnes John Barnum Edward Barrett, Jr. Scott Barrier Ann Bartkowiak Donna Bartlow Ruth Barton Carl Bass Nancy Bauer Donna Bay Dean Bealer Jeff Bean 140 Donald Beaver John Benger Laurel Bennett Valerie Bernosky Paul Belak Craig Bennett Diane Berardi Bradford Berry William Berezny Norman Bertasavage Mark Berg Ed Bezdziecki 141 Scott Birth Kandy Black Betty BIyler Maureen Bottone Jim Bischoff Steve Black Eva Boccanera Carole V. After a frustrating month of searching, she nally had a lease in her hands which she agreed D sign, despite its violation of her rights and the ubstandard housing it represented. What choice lid she have on a campus which simply does not lave enough on or off-campus housing? Months later, she walked down the steps of her ipartment, late on a Sunday morning to be ireeted by a litter of glasses, ashtrays, paper ups, and the aroma of stale beer. She quickly lecided to shower first, clean-up later, but the ounds from the house ' s only bathroom told her she ' d be waiting in line along with her six room- mates for her turn. Oh well, she thought, it ' s just one of the prices you have to pay for living off- campus. Despite the landlord problems and the long walk to campus, she had found certain advantages to living here. She enjoyed the free- dom and self-responsibility and she was learning to get along better with other personalities. Once in awhile she had missed the feeling of community which exists in dorms and meeting new people all the time, but she could not really say that either type of living was better than the other. Whether on or off, campus living was bound to be an experience. by Barbara Fahey 243 Kehr Union Something for Everyone! 244 HMIp 245 246 To Be or Not to Be . . . Involved Student involvement was an area which invoked much criticism and consternation in the BSC college community in 1 977-78 as it often has in years past. Some said that there is no student involvement, or that students who were involved were involved in the wrong things. The question that such thinking brings to light is: Was there a right or wrong way to have been involved? Many share the opinion that the only wrong stu- dent involvement is no student involvement. If stu- dents involved themselves in nothing at BSC, they robbed themselves of many experiences growing and working with people. Economically speaking, they also robbed themselves of the sixty dollar Com- munity Activities fee which they were required to pay whether they joined organizations or not. What then was the right way to become involved? Rousing yourself out of your dormitory or apart- ment, caring enough about something to devote some time and effort to it, sharing experiences with people, growing as a person through such interac- tion, broadening your horizons to other kinds of peo- ple and ideas, and feeling responsible when a goal has been accomplished through your involvement. What were some of the things which student involvement accomplished this year? Many new sports came to life, TKE held the first Intercollegiate Supa-Stars Contest, an independent evaluation of faculty was published by CGA, and Greeks grew to encompass twenty per cent of the campus population. These examples are a few among many, and not all were condoned by all factions of the campus. Yet they were goals achieved, and in a transient life-style such as college, where students ' needs are intense and must be met immediately, where interest flags after setbacks, and in an environment lacking in much continuity, students can take some pride in the fact that they were able to get some things done. There were also dreams that went unrealized, pro- jects started, issues attacked that were impossible, or so it seemed, to see fulfilled. These will not be dwelt upon, as it is too late for those to whom this book is directed. All that can be hoped for is that underclassmen will be able to pull together previous efforts and make inroads to the issues where only small, close paths had been. No matter what students were involved in, at least many will leave knowing that they did accomplish something which added to the essence of Blooms- burg State College. by Barbara Fahey 247 i : - T « 3 3 .1 248 '  • ' njdr 249 Tuition $1050 r I ■• l s ' Ticket 432 Cost of Living Rem 750 Community Activities 60 The Year in Dollars and Cents PhcnlBi,,s::::: ; ; i?? We waited . . . and waited for meals, for books, for advisors, for beer, for apartments, for refrigerators, and for schedule changes. Amazingly enough, most of us became more impatient with lines and crowds as a result of these lessons and even more impatient with a system that allows such overcrowding to occur. Overcrowding was one of BSC ' s gravest problems this year because it was the root of so many other evils — the off campus housing situation, parking, tripling, apathy, faculty-student relationships, cheating, damage and crime. Of course, varied causes, excuses and possible solu tions were continually being offered up by the adminis tration but were slow in coming and the age-old question remained unanswered — had enrollment actually been curbed? Meanwhile students had to arrive twenty min- utes early to get a seat in class, three students were shoved into rooms designed for two, and advisors gra- ciously provided students with ten minutes to schedule so they could fit everyone in. We were denied many of the rights our tuition paid for and hopefully something meaningful will be done about this situation in the future. Perhaps the students need to take some action to bring attention to their plight — like requiring the faculty and administration to park at Nel- son or tripling the offices in Waller to allow for some needed classrooms. I wonder if there are lines in the Fac- ulty Dining Room . . . by Cathy Poff enberger 256 fnr fc JM B . ' ' ' I 257 The Greeks Rise Aaain In the past few years at BSC Greeks have experienced a resur- gence of interest. This year witnessed some of the largest pledge classes ever and, as of 1978, twenty per cent of the student body belonged to a social sorority or fraternity. Although you may ques- tion the importance of this, I maintain that the Greekness of a campus does affect its character. Whether those effects are positive or negative is a subject of continuing debate. Greeks at their best are varied groups of individuals brought together through a need to meet others and be of service to the col- lege and the community. Because of the sharing of experiences and the bonds formed by competition with other groups, Greeks do form a type of family and can indeed make college life more secure and enjoyable. On the other hand, Greeks at their worst can be seen as tight cli- ques, excluding those who they feel do not reach their standards; disregarding of all criticism; and overly competitive with other Greeks. The pledging process can be viewed as the degradation of individuals to make them think and act to meet the approval of the group and can be damaging to physical and emotional health. Belonging to a frat or sorority often limits contacts with people and problems ou tside Greek life. Why has there been this sudden interest in Greeks? During the late Sixties and early Seventies, Greeks were at their lowest status as students directed their energies toward more political activities. Today the energies remain but are aimed toward individual well- being, job-training and social life. In an effort to improve the latter many students turned Greek. At BSC this year we have also seen that, as with elections, Greeks can exert a great deal of power and, as in the DOC case, can initiate a great deal of controversy. Whether we liked it or not, Greeks were an element to be recognized in 1 977-78. by Cathy Poffenberger 259 BSC Braves the Elements 260 261 - f: K ' ' l.- iii,, ' : - BSC After Dark Hot Times m in the OdTown As the sun sinks slowly into the west and streetlights begin blinking at the moon, the seemingly sleepy little town of Bloomsburg (the only real town in PA, by the way) springs into electrifying life of pulsating rhythm of neo-lit music intermingling with sparkling laughter of exotic voices . . . There were good things and bad but all in all it was a successful and newsworthy year. As in most years, the fall began slowly with little real news but suddenly the Bloomsburg Fair was upon us and from then on the headlines just didn ' t stop. Controversies over tuition increase started early in the year with letter campaigns, lobbying and an all out effort to fight the expense. Then the cam- pus was flooded with anxious high school stu- dents for the Journalism Institute which featured Vincent Bugliosi, the famous author of the spine- tingling book, Helter Skelter. He gave an intri- guing speech on the Manson murder trial to a packed auditorium. However, although these were important begin- nings, they are not the year ' s real headliners. Student on Ballot for Town Council, will haunt many of us for years to come. BSC student Corey Waters ran for a position on Bloomsburg Town Council and, with the support of his fellow students, he could have won. Also, only 585 out of BSC ' s 1200 registered voters bothered to vote, and Corey came in fourth for three open spots on Council. It was not a pleasant outcome and the students lost an excellent opportunity to have a voice in town affairs. After the disappointing election, the next big news was the housing realignment with changes made in dorm residencies for incoming students in the fall. BSC now has one co-ed hall and females are being given a taste of Elwell. Males have a choice of Mountour, Luzerne, or Northum- berland. Town-College relations were not helped by the famous headline, Suspended Policeman Under Investigation. Town policeman, William Carl, was accused of sexually assaulting a BSC coed behind Nelson Fieldhouse. The case and investigation lin- gered on until the policeman was found guilty an d is presently serving a 9-23 month sentence. Sounds simple enough but the case began in October and was not settled until April. Some townspeople even held a dinner for Carl because they felt him wronged. What about the BSC stu- dent? If the police investigation wet your whistle for news, the Spring semester brought bigger and better headlines. Several BSC students filed a case against their landlord and sued with the use of CGA funding. Their house was condemned and they were forced to evacuate the premises. John Abell, Housing Director and the CGA student law- yer were both kept busy by the controversy. An interesting sidelight to the case was that the land- lord was none other than a BSC faculty member and head of the Math department, Stephen Beck. The case is due to come up over the summer and will provide more news for next year. Unfamiliar to most BSC students was the case of Joseph T. Skehan. Skehan was a faculty mem- ber at BSC who was dismissed seven years ago along with Deake Porter in a college scandal. Ske- han had been fighting the case for seven years during which he went to the Supreme Court twice. Finally, he ended up back at BSC for a committee to decide whether or not his academic freedoms had been violated and whether his dismissal was valid. The committee, composed of BSC faculty members and Attorney Generals from Harrisburg, had a long, hard battle. The committee finally decided that Skehan ' s freedoms had been violated but in another hearing they recommended that his dismissal be upheld. The case involved so many years of struggle and limited publicity that many BSC students had no way of knowing about the controversy. It was indeed an important decision but a very old case. President McCormick has received the recommendation for Skehan ' s dis- missal but to date there has not been a decision. Tragedy also hit BSC with, Student Dies from Fall. BSC art student, Chip Callahan, was clim- bing out on the roof of Old Science Hall, slipped on the icy surface, and fell to his death. Chip was attempting to enter an art room through a window at the time. The keys were available to the room from Security but the window was a common means of entry. Another death was that of BSC ' s mascot, the Husky dog, owned by the McCormick family. He was hit by a car. The parking problem flared this year with townspeople and the college searching for a viable answer. Proposal after proposal was considered and still a definite solution seems out of reach. However, the restrictions on campus parking for students have been lift ed and fines increased. Housing, another severe BSC problem and headline, may be partially alleviated by the con- struction of a private dormitory by Zeisloft on Iron and Knapp Streets downtown. The Zeisloft Pro- posal was greatly opposed by the town but with compromises was finally approved. The project will be available to students in the fall. BSC again had an election, this time for CGA officers. In its historic outcome, Joe Surdoval defeated Vince LaRuffa in a run for president. Joe is the first president to remain in office for a sec- ond term. Another first was accomplished this year in CGA, mainly through the efforts of Vice-President Barbara Fahey. In April, BSC ' s first Independent Student Evaluation of Faculty was published. Finally, one of the year ' s biggest issues was the CAS mandatory fee. Previously a $2 fee voluntar- ily paid by students to aid CAS efforts on behalf of the state college syst em, in a spring referendum, the campus decided that fee would become a mandatory part of the college bill. This issue sparked deep emotions and the Campus Voice spoke out strongly against passage of the referen- dum. But despite the opposition, the fee passed two hundred votes. Unfortunately, only 1000 stu- dents cared enough about their right to decide what organizations their money should go to, to vote. Some say CAS would have died without the fee but if student interest wasn ' t there then per- haps it should have. For a year that people say was boring, more than enough happened at BSC 1977-78 to fill newspapers every week. Of course, this selective list is what I felt was most important from those papers — the real headliners. Now that the end is here and we can objectively look back on a year of action and change both good and bad, we all must make our own decisons on what the big headlines were — I made mine. BORSKI 3 1 56 Aramingo Avenue Philadelphia, Pa. 269 Editor ' s Message After reading the Editor ' s messages in twenty past years of Obiters, I concluded that I had better not plagiarize. Somebody would be sure to notice someday. Besides, three hours after graduation, after three years of BSC, I suppose I should have something to say. All year I ' ve been telling myself that of the entire graduating class of 1978, I would have the chance to make the closing remarks on the year — not Jim Byrnes at Com- mencement, but me, here on these very pages. How ironic that faced w ith this great opportunity to say it all, I have very little to say, or very little that I can put into words. But I haven ' t been an English major for nothing. By the time you ' re reading this for the first time, I will have experienced one year of tortuous sus- pense wondering what this yearbook would turn out to be. I ' m not sure I know exactly what it should be. Will these 272 pages be able to bring back the cheers for a rare Husky touchdown, the taste of donuts and coffee at exam time, the sound of friends gathered around the keg at that very last party, or the feeling of finally making Dean ' s list after seven semesters of trying? I only wish they could. No, the Obiter cannot bring back 1977-78. It can only reflect it, jolt some memo- ries, and maybe cause a little sadness because most of us didn ' t really appreciate BSC while we were there. When I began this book I naively believed I could represent all aspects of BSC. I soon discov- ered that to do that would require a minimum of 5,500 volumes and a staff made up of every stu- dent on campus because that ' s how many view- points there are. What you see here on these pages is my viewpoint — not even that of my edi- tors because even though they helped me a great deal, the final responsibility was mine. I sincerely hope my perspective was at least close to yours, and that you do enjoy the book. But if you don ' t there isn ' t much you can do except maybe trade it in on next year ' s model. Because the Obiter is only a visual reflection, it will mean more to those who were the most involved with the events and people represented here. For those of you who chose to live your lives inside little bubbles, you need more than a year- book to give value to your college lives. Although I can claim credit for the editorial direction of this year ' s book, I cannot say that I produced the Obiter without help. In fact, without these people, my efforts would have been worth- less. My deepest thanks go to Barbara Borski, my trusty assistant, who if upset by my constant dis- organization, kept it discreetly to herself. To Carol, Joannie, Jane and Joanne, thank you for sticking it out when the rest of the staff dwindled away. Rich, you were great with the dollars and it ' s too bad we never figured out how to extort some. And Albert, I can ' t apologize for bitching at you so much because you deserved it all but I ' ll always believe you ' re one of the most talented people I ' ve ever known (part of the reason for my bitching) and through it all you made me smile. A special thanks to ex-editor Barb Fahey who taught me everything (almost) I know about yearbooking; to Mr. Hoffman, my ever-faithful, always encourag- ing advisor; to Vince Lynot of Taylor Publishing for putting up with my bad memory; to the crew at Varden Studios for their fine photographic efforts in trying to make us all beautiful; and to all the wonderful Kehr Union people who genuinely enjoy working with students. And finally, as the most distinctive thank you of all, I am dedicating this 1978 Obiter to a small group of students who are basically responsible for there being a yearbook at all — those among us who did more than attend classes, and parties and complain; those who worked to make changes, to improve; those who rose to accept the responsibilities of leadership, who made some sacrifices, who attempted to reach some goals that most of the campus never bothered to think about. No, campuses are not the centers of activ- ism they were in the Sixties, but even today there are those students who have proven for their four years of college life, that activism is alive and liv- ing. Because of the efforts of these people, events occurred, organizations were active, and some- thing happened at BSC in 1 977-78. To all those that played a part in all that was this year, to all who did indeed grow in mind, body, spirit, self, others and life . . . thank you for mak- ing the memories that make a yearbook.
