I f TRASH 1970-71 ... a review the editor of the 1969 obiter marked that year as the turning point of bloomsburg state college; in 1971 we seemed to still be turning as dr. nossen, in his sec- ond year at the helm, was finding it difficult to move far in any direction, an air of uncertainty settled over the campus. throughout the fall of the year many people were surprised at the quietness that surrounded the many universities and colleges of our land, the hartford green — previously the scene of much demonstrating — was vacant and little noise came out of berkeley. student leaders were unable to interest their people in any sort of demonstration for apathy apparently had settled among them. on the international scene the horrible war between nigeria and biafra ended with the latter ' s defeat, in the middle east egypt and israel signed a cease-fire and the united states and her allies in viet-nam launched a disastrous campaign in laos. we learned of the persecution of jews in russia. france ' s charles de gaulle died and Spain ' s monarchy was re-established, in south america chile became the first nation to vote into power (legally) a marxist government, while in northern Ireland catholics fought protestants. here at home milton shapp was elected governor of our state. meanwhile at b.s.c. the students cast aside newly bought books and escaped into a world of amuse- ment, the bloomsburg fair was upon us, followed closely by homecoming — that time of year when students democratically elect a group of girls to as- sume positions of royalty, with a parade, a football game and a concert we welcomed alumni back to b.s.c. while classes and the student union occupied our days the theatre occupied a few of our nights with entertainment of the finest quality, marat sade, sum- mertree, man of la mancha and time of your life showed the college community the bloomsburg players could successfully present the most difficult of plays. professors porter and skehan were dismissed, leading to unusual developments that continued throughout the year, a new system of registration was initiated — the computer overthrew the system of student choice, in January many students returned to find they had been removed (dropped) by a new aca- demic policy, and finally, to top all things off, we learned that the sovereign state of Pennsylvania was on the verge of bankruptcy which did nothing to lessen uncertainty on the campus, in may we remembered the kent state dead and in June we demonstrated sup- port for athletic coaches. publications obiter maroon and gold olympian pilot .l - ii f director of publications mr. kenneth Hoffman bill teitsworth editor-in-chief maroon and go business manager .dor remsen managing editor .torn funl news editor , sam trapane co-feature editors .jim sachetti terry blass sports editor .jack hoffman copy editor co-circulation mgrs. .iinda ennis I .pat heller :aroi kishbaugh photo editor art editor .mark foucart John stugrin advertising manager advisor .enneth c. hoffman staff: kaye calpin, jim chapman, carmon ciullo, lora duckworth, pam hickey, cathy jack, karen keinard, cindy michener, torn schofield, glen spotts, sue sprague, frank pizzoli, Jesse james, Harris wolfe, dave kelter, sieve bergamo, donna skomsky, mary ann petrusa, a. rekniht nancy van pelt, mike yarmey terry blass co-feature jack hoffman — sports sam trapane — news dor remsen — bus. mgr. jim sachetti- co-feature linda ennis — copy pilot . . . olympian allan maurer editor-in-chief david patrick o ' brien obiter david Patrick o ' brien editor-in-chief thomas I. funk assistant editor pam hickey organization manager alan klawitter sports editor sally swetiand academics editor dianne fluhr organizations editor michael o ' day business manager mark foucart, tom schofield photographic editors bob casey assistant editor staff: leo wisneski, John godni, david Jones, roberta romans, linda le clair, robert kolenda, woody, diana furry, michael gilroy, and thanks to all those who signed up but never showed up. academics editor sally swetland bob casey — assistant editor sports editor alan klawitter torn funk assist, manager P Mickey orgn. manager mike o ' day business mgr. •Qim- ' . This year the theme dealt with the running of a newspaper, invitations were sent to schools throughout the northeastern section of Pennsylvania; and many of the schools responded favorably, throughout the three day session discus- sion on layouts, pictures, and administration of staff were held, we are sure that in future years the development of this type of conference will continue and prove to be just as successful as the one held this year awards memorial to kent state t HUV V 3r I « t 1 ! 1 i ! PM 4 m i§ IK« editor ' s message . in august of 1970 my assistant editor and myself arrived at b.s.c. to take over the new yearbook, with many difficulties — including the old 1970 obiter — we have finished our labor and now would like to present it to you. this years ' obiter, we hope, is truly an adequate representation of college life here at b.s.c. in 1970-71 bloomsburg state college went through a series of grave and delicate situations — porter-skehan, the four coaches, switches in registration procedure, and lack of funds from a near-bankrupt state, on the outside relations in the middle east became strained with the death of gamal abdul nassar. in viet-nam the united states and her allies launched an offensive in laos that miscarried, but towards the end of the college term 1971 things began to cool down and it looked as though peace was a little bit closer. in closing i, david o ' brien, would like to extend thanks to the fol- lowing: mr. michael gilroy, mr. kenneth hoffman, and to mr. boyd buckingham whose help proved invaluable, also, i would like to extend thanks to my editors and the staff for doing their work. david Patrick o ' brien 1970-71 editor-in-chief Printed By BRADBURY, SAYLES, O ' NEILL-PARAGON College and Independent School Affiliate of Porogon Press, Inc.
