Roberts III from ihe private collection of Rev, and Mrs. John Simpers, Hockessin. Delauare. I I A a ■•-■t55?l i fei I ron schulz, e.g. a. president I was born bright eyed and innocent in the 1 946th year of our Lord. To be more exact, the date was September 16; the place was Stuttgart. Germany. After an uneventful childhood that was spoiled by the absence of authentic GI Joe soldier dolls and kill ' em death, everybody-in-the- neighborhood-has-one tommy-guns, television, and Daniel Boone skunk caps, my parents moved to America in 1954, and three years later we had a re-union in Hatboro, Pennsylvania. I started school one month afterwards, attending third grade for one day, fourth grade for two days, and subsequently being placed in the fifth grade and there forgotten. During my three year stay in junior high school, I played football, participated in wrestling, ran for the track team, made friends and enemies (a practice that has continued until today), wore black leather jackets and suites with white socks to dances. In high school the same pattern was true, but then we wore black socks, black raincoats, and button-down collar shirts to look more collegiate. I went back to Germany for three months after my senior year in high school. and then came to Bloomsburg because I wanted to wrestle. My freshman year I studied, read subversive books, carried my home-made Get Out of Vietnam sign at Bloomsburg ' s protest to the Vietnam protest movement, grew long hair, and wrote poetry. After an unsuccessful attempt to enroll at U of P. my second year before the Sun was the year of change at Bloomsburg. Old North was torn down, and other buildings sprung up all over the campus. In early spring it was like marching through World War I trenches in the rain. My Junior year was the surrealistic time of Slack, the Gadfly. M G resignation, protest (?) march outside of Andruss Library in support of free press and speech, and continuing student awareness. Benyo took over the M G. Slack put it to the administration. as did the ACLU and the State Attorney General . . . and Schulz wrote articles of protest about the college in his column for the M G. I had run for CGA representative twice before and twice defeated. But I still thought about correcting the wrongs instead of writing about them. Sic, Don Quixote. So, Pletcher. Slack, Capello. and Schulz started SURGE, a student party united to reform something — but exactly what has been long since forgotten. We had our day of victory, felt jubilant, and then made ready for the onslaught. It was not long before many of us knew that we were engaged in an exercise of futility. Fund-raising events, approval of certain club constitutions, money requests to buy new caps and gowns, money for ARM and ARW to buy new TV ' s, such is the stuff of which CGA meetings are made. The dragons have not been slain, wrongs not righted, and fair maidens not rescued. It was a wonderful, inaudible year or four. when teacups floated by, carrying the ashes of burned BA diplomas, spilled over the river winding, and floating out to sea. ron schulz college council . . . homecoming sam and dave concert linda zerfoss homecoming queen parade . . . ! world peace through cultural exchange •) homecoming queen ' s court SUEMAGILL MARY ANN HARTMAN PAT DOUGHERTY JUDY ADONEZIO homecoming chairman mark piazza 1 fi? 5 ' K • o% . -gg J . . Thirteen Bachelor of Arts degrees and one hundred thirty-one Bachelor of Science in Education degrees were awarded at the ceremonies in Haas Auditorium. In addition, there were fourteen Master of Education degrees presented. Dr. Harvey A. The spring season was highlighted by a week of Hellenic hell-raising — activities sponsored by the IFC and ISC. The Attic antics began on March 23 with the Greek Sing in which the fraternities and sororities entered in competition their musi- cally bizarre talents. The first place winner was Chi Sigma Rho. On Monday night, March 24, SIO hosted the Harlem Astronauts, a comic- professional team who challenged the fraternity ■' all-stars ; their game proved to be delight- fully funny. March 25 ended with a tug-of-war on the terraces. Despite the rain and oceans of mud (BSC abounds in mud) the Greeks had a wild time with the sisters of Tau Sigma Pi and the brothers of Delta Omega Chi coming out on top. Wednesday was the night of the Greek Dinner where Scholarship Trophies were pre- sented to the organizations having the highest over-all cummulative averages. They went to Pi Epsilon Chi and Theta Gamma Phi. Greek Week ended with Olympic Day on Saturday. These ranged from the Norman Luboff choir to New Frontiersman Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. Discussing the Sino-Soviet rift only a few days after the Damansky island fighting was Dr. Vernon Aspaturian of Penn State. John Ciardi of the Saturday Review (poetry) discoursed on the value of a col- lege education, and did so without the pomposity the subject usually elicits from speakers. Finally. Michael Harring- ton valiantly made three efforts to appear before the assembled students of this institution, but a series of obstacles ranging from an act of God, a union picket line, and personal illness stayed him from his scheduled course. afro-american studies The History Department, in conjunction with the Mu Psi Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, sponsored a conference on Afro-American Studies: History and Perspectives on April 20 and 21. Within recent years, the topic of Afro-American studies has become one which has been in- creasingly debated within the history profession specifically, and among educators generally. The purpose of the conference was to provide a constructive opportunity to bring together the personnel of the academic community in order to pool their various talents and contributions into a meaningful dialog that would provide greater understanding and com- prehension of the Afro-American studies and its place in education, both at the college and secondary school level. The conference format centered around the teaching, historical con- tributions, and recent research related to Afro-American studies. Some of the panels were concerned with the methods of incorporating this area into the curriculum, while others dealt with recent historical re- search in the field of Afro-American studies. The panelists were drawn from a wide range of schools and universities in Pennsylvania, and in- cluded many members of the Bloomsburg staff. The highlight of the conference was a demonstration of African dances and ceremonial rites, as well as a program of Negro spiritual songs by students of the Robert Vaux Junior High School in Philadel- phia. Their professional-like performance served to confirm the view of the conference committee that relevant and timely topics could serve to arouse interest and discussion. the year of the cock Marked by mourning, triumph, and tumult, the 1968-69 college year was by any standard a turning point for Americans and for the world. Two political murderers — Sirhan Sirhan and James Earl Ray — were apprehended and brought to trial for the killings of Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Six Americans orbited the moon in Apollo missions eight and ten. Chicago exploded in riot and convulsion as the Democrats chose Hubert H. Humphrey to oppose Richard M. Nixon, who won the election in an all-night cliffhanger. In Czechoslovakia emerging liberty was swept aside by Soviet treachery and invasion. In France, Charles DeGaulle, the last surviving leader of the World War II generation, was rejected by the people to whom he had brought stability and prosperity. On an obscure island called Damanski (by the Russians) or Chen Pao (by the Chinese) the two giant powers ex- changed fire and shed blood in a portent of possible racial and ideological warfare. Nigeria continued its tortured agony, struggling pitifully against the determined Biafrans. It was the time of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Rosemary ' s Baby, the Beatles ' Yellow Submarine. Hair, and Hadrian VII . . . Rod McKuen ' s and Glen Campbell ' s voices . . . Philip Roth. Norman Mailer, and Alexander Solzhenitsyn ' s books ... the re-election of Barry Goldwater. and the election of his son ... the retirement of Lyndon Johnson ... the marriage of Julie Nixon and David Eisenhower, and the death of David ' s grandfather, Dwight David Eisenhower, the liberator of Europe. It was the year Ethel Kennedy bore her late husband ' s last child, months after he was shot in a pantry in Los Angeles. It was the year of Laugh-Ill and the mini-skirt. It was the year that saw the start of the de-Americanization of the war in Vietnam ahhough casualties continued to climb. It saw the release of the crew of the captured intelligence ship Pueblo, and the embarrassing investigation which followed. Then North Koreans did an encore and shot down an unarmed reconnaissance plane over international waters. The Arab- Israeli War ground on in low gear, and the number of plane hijackings to Cuba forced CIA agents to travel south by train. This was the time when the Pope was defied and challenged by millions of Catholics when he spoke his mind on birth control. Jacqueline Kennedy married Aris- totle Onasis, and Mia Farrow left Frank Sinatra. The Fortas affair shook the dignity of the Supreme Court, and May-December marriages raised eyebrows all over the country. It was the year of the 100th heart transplant and the artificial creation of enzymes. From campus to campus the flames of protest, rebellion, and progress jumped: Columbia, San Francisco State, CCNY, Harvard, Cornell. The liberal mood of the country initiated in the Kennedy era seemed to have come to a dead end as the political pendulum began to swing in the other direction. In Viet- nam they called ' 69 the Year of the Cock. 1965-1969; 1966-1970; 1967-1971; 1968-1972; 1969-etc..etc.etc.. Good Morning! P« ■. j rf J-M. ' ' The voices of student dissent continued during the 1968-69 college year. Unlike other campuses where activists have engaged in policies which have included violence and surpession of opposing viewpoints, the activists at Bloomsburg have been struggling to create an atmos- phere where free expression and constructive reforms can be made. Student publications form the vanguard of student opinion and thus represent a unique service to the college community, unlike that of any other campus organization. A student-operated radio station will soon join the already operating publications. Now appearing twice-a-weck, the Maroon And CoUl enjoys virtually unlimited editorial freedom; its principle stumbling blocks arc a small staff and a depressing inclination of the student body in general to misunderstand (with a woeful ignorance of the intentions and appearance of satire or understatement! what the M C journalists are saying. The 1969 Olympian seized the eye with a psychedelic cover and then caged the minds of its readers with excellent writing, evoca- tive layouts, and the calm assurance of a literary snowstorm. In the Ohiier candid and semi- candid photography and a fresh understanding of the possibilities of creative graphics turned the yearbook into more of an essay on the experience of being at Bloomsburg than a trite recitation (as in previous years) of who belonged to what organization and where they went to honor each other. The Pilot shifted from orienting freshmen to being a starting point in learning what goes on at BSC (explicit point by point social regulations, a more manageable format) — in short, a guidebook in how to get involved. Two years ago, in response to threats of censorship and authoritarianism (whether real or not, or to what degree real still remains uncertain) the Gadfly was born at Bloomsburg, in a fashion somewhat between the spontaneous generation theory that Louis Pasteur demolished in demonstrating the existence of germs in rotten meat, and the cabalistic approach favored by some students who perceive in the Gadfly ' s genesis the hands of militant revolutionary Leninists. The Gadfly, BSC ' s underground free press, began again this past year under the direction of Gary Fletcher. Assuming a new format and a less direct challenge to the adminis- tration, it was a journal where ail opinions could be expressed. Gary graduated in January, and the Gadfly resumed publication later in the spring under the hand of Bill Sanders. Trying to steer a course between his two predecessors. Sanders integrated the local problems of BSC with those of other colleges and universities across the country. Still controversial, the un- sanctioned paper ' s more attractive format and clear concern to avoid merely vindictive personal attacks have earned it a status almost competitive with the Uinion Gold. The 1969-70 school year will mark the beginning of monetary renumeration for the top student editors. This long-overdue improvement was one of the last contributions of Mr. Richard Savage who has for nine years served as an advisor to BSC ' s various publications. The time he has given the students involved with publications over those nine years is incal- culable. When he first came to BSC from the Sniiirduy Evening Poxi the M S C appeared twice a month; now it is printed twice a week. His efforts have done much to improve the quality of BSC ' s student publications. Mr. Robert A. Haller has, in two years as Director of Publications at BSC. produced the college ' s best looking, best bound, and best balanced college catalog (1969), upgraded the quality and kind of photography used in the yearbook, and opened minds to new and different ideas in the publications field. Just as crazy and dedicated as everyone else in publications, Haller did a quite amazing amount of work in two years — reconstructing, designing, proof- reading, and creating various publications, taking and printing pictures and teaching students to do the same, and acting as advisor to all of BSC ' s publications at one time or another. Haller is pursuing a career in publications and photography and is not returning to BSC. His last gesture was to originate the Publications Director ' s awards, which went to John Dietrichson for the Olympian. Bloomsburg ' s free press, had a difficult time establishing itself with the establishment . After two trials in which the Gadfly was defended by Professor James Percey, instructor of Constitutional Law, it seemed that the stage of repression had ended and that a more enlightened attitude toward constitutional freedoms would prevail. But not so. Both Slack and Larry Phillips, a writer for the Gadfly and the Maroon and Gold, were refused diplomas 48 hours ahead of their ex- pected graduation in May 1968. Months later. the degrees were granted after pressure was put on the administration by the American Civil Liberties Union in Philadelphia. Bowed, bloody, but unbeaten, the Gadfly continues as the campus conscience. Left: Gary Pletcher. first semester editor. Below: Bill Sanders, second semester editor, and Tom Brennan. assistant editor. The 1968-69 college yeai marked a turning point for Bloomsburg as Dr. Harvey A. Andruss, President of BSC for the past 30 years announced his retirement, to be effective September 1969. During his tenure, the college grew from a State Teachers College to a State College, with univer- sity status now within sight. Dr. Andruss has been noted for his apt handling of financial affairs for the college in difficult times, and his struggle to keep state college professors ' salaries competitive with private educational institutions. Academically, the 1968-69 year was the first for the new departments of Economics and PoUti- cal Science, which were a needed and appreciated addition to the college curricular offerings. Off to a progressive start, the Political Science Depart- ment has outlined the framework for a student committee to give suggestions for the betterment of the department. This committee will help to evaluate textbooks, courses, and help select fac- ulty. A Journalism certificate will be offered for the first time in the fall of 1969 to accompany the cur- ricular expansion in this field, and a full tin journalism professor will implement the faculty. Expansion in the Graduate Division continued ' as the History Department became the first to offer a Master of Arts degree. Soon the depart- ments of Biology, English, Speech, and others will open an extensive Masters program as they de- velop. Stroudsburg Opponent 27 6 13 41 21 12 12 70 The 1968 gridiron team was marked with many young players whose inexperience proved costly, even though they were always willing to give their all. In the backfield, senior Art Sell was the only seasoned runner and consistently gave the opposition all they could handle. Sophomore Bill Firestine proved to be the most exciting runner for the Huskies in quite some time. The quarterbacking was handled by sophomore Terry Lessman until a knee injury forced him to give way to class- mate Tucker Schneider. The team never gave up despite being outmanned in every game but Susquehanna. Only two times they were swamped on the field. BSC ' s best performance of the year came against Kutztown ' s eleven. They had experience, weight, a better offense and defense, but the Huskies- aerial team of Schneider to Burger never allowed the Golden Bears to get on track. All in all it was a year of readjustment and planning for the future. Rookie coach Densdorff and his assistants now have control, and with the returning letter winners, it should be an exciting fall of 1969. cross country This year ' s marathon men were led by Charlie Moyer and Chuck Bowman in what could have been a great season. But the team didn ' t jell because they were never able to gel into top shape. Unfortunately all the runners were not running well together until the last meets when they defeated King ' s and Luzerne by wide margins. Well liked by all mem- bers of the team was the personable new coach, Clyde Noble, who kept smiling through a bizarre year, punctuated by the team getting lost on the turnpike, acci- dentally finding itself in the midst of a Thanksgiving parade behind a steam calliope, and visiting Cheyney to meet a track team that had already gone home. Jim Dulaney poured in 46 points against Lock Haven to erase the individual scor- ing record in one game by Dick Lloyd. Palmer Toto, the other gradu- ating senior, led the team once again in assists, and provided the key to the fast break which worked so well toward the end of the season. Mark Yanchek. who started the season on the bench, ended the year being one of the leading scorers for the Huskies. He scored a high of 28 against Millersville. The most exciting game of the season was one which not many fans had the opportunity to see. Playing Millersville away, the Huskies were 30 points down in the last quarter but by sheer desire, a great running attack, and the shooting of Larry Monaghan and Bob Snyder, they beat the Maurauders by eight points. Cheyney was the game the team wanted most to win. But they didn ' t. Bloomsburg froze the ball in the first half, hoping to keep the score close. In the second half. Bloomsburg caught Cheyney by sur- prise and forged a three point lead. But later in the game Cheyney regained the lead. A few breaks went against the Huskies and Chey- ney won by one. 4t ' ' Cl 44 :r:rr Date BSC Opponent Dec. 4 11 West Chester 97 Dec. 6 11 Shippensburg 78 Dec. 1 1 78 Kutztown 77 Dec. 17 86 Millersville 96 Dec. 19 93 Glassboro 11 Dec. 20 75 Washington and Lee 87 Dec. 26 89 Mansfield 69 Dec. 27 89 Towson 93 Jan. 8 62 Mansfield 60 Jan. Elwell Hall is named after a family that gave the college three generations of service, beginning with Judge William EIwcll, who served as a trustee of the school from 1868 to 1887. His son George also served as a trustee and as President of the board. George E. Elwell. Jr.. a grandson of the judge, was an instructor in French from 1913 to 1920. Elwell Hall is the largest college men ' s dormitory in the stale of Pennsylvania, accomodating 672 men, and offices for the Dean of Men and his staff, recreation rooms, lounges, T.V. rooms, study rooms and storage areas within its nine stories. It is the first high-rise structure to be completed on campus, and the first hint of cosmopolitan growth which the expansion of the college will inevitably bring to the area. The completion of Hartline Science Center in January of 1969 marked another step forward in providing the students o ' BSC with modern, up-to date academic facili- ties. The building contains, in addition to 22 classrooms, laboratories for all departments of science. On the base- ment floor there are an animal room, a dark-room, an isatope vault, and a mechanical room. On the ground floor there are three large lecture rooms each seating more than 100 students, a botany honors lab, a physics honors lab, a micro-techniques lab, and a general physics lab. The first floor contains three lecture rooms, two seminar rooms, faculty offices, three zoology honors labs, three general zoology labs, a walk-in refrigerator room, and an ampi- theatre seating up to 300 students. The second floor in- cludes an analytical and chemistry lab. an organic chemis- try lab, an earth science lab, a chemistry honors lab, and general chemistry labs. Also on this floor are seminar and lecture rooms, a balance room, and a spectroscope room. Telescope mounting apparatus are located on the roof of the building in anticipation of funds to finance further scientic equipment. Although Hartline Science Center is an architectural labyrinth, the structure is, nevertheless, a valuable addition to the BSC campus. greeks . . . ft. t- vct;ui aiu i Sigma cm . . . uii ii b UCCI VCCT Deer Iflc lakes me want to . . . sigma iota omega . . . twent iree skidoo . . . pledge . . . delta epsilon beta . . . me ' s house . . . interfraternity council . . . brotherize . . delta pi . . . spaghetti dinner . . . banquet . . . thet amma phi . . . fund raising project ... pi kappa eps )n . . . orphan . . . party . . . alpha phi omega . . . ra ih rah . . . chi sigma rho ... sis boom bah . . . phi sij la xi . . . greek week . . . sisterhood . . . tau sigma . . stone castle . . . beta sig . . . founder ' s day . . . ii amurals . . . lams . . . clambake . . . intersororit )uncil . . . delta omega chi . . . big man on campus . . riar heights . . . sweetheart of sigma chi . . . oh it ser beer beer that makes me want to . . . sigma iol mega . . . twenty three skidoo . . . pledge . . . dell 3silon beta . . . meyers house . . . interfraternity coui 1 . . . brotherized . . . delta pi . . . spaghetti dinner , . anquet . . . theta gamma phi . . . fund raising projec . . pi kappa epsilon . . . orphan . . . party . . . alpha pi mega . . . rah rah rah ... chi sigma rho ... sis booi ah . . . phi sigma xi . . . greek week . . . sisterhood . . lu sigma pi . . . stone castle . . . beta sig . . . founder -- . - - k I rf  • ' ' V Uv r i ' 1 « ' 4- . -V 1 1. BrcB i • s ■m 1 m £ ' ■??ay i J ' 1 H -w j 9  ,f ' t-: TZ iV hE ■Ei s i ■Mr. Foley spent five years at Northeastern University in Bosto n majoring in history and English while working nights on the Boston Globe. He received an M,A. in history from Boston University in 1958. and taught in a private school in New England. In 1960 he received another MA. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Mr. Foley taught English for four years in a Boston public high school while simultaneously a member of the faculty at Newton College of the Sacred Heart. In September 1965 he resumed graduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley in the Graduate Schools of Education and Arts and Sciences, and will be awarded a Ph.D after completing his dissertation later this year. Question: What was your first impression of Berkeley after teaching in Boston? Answer: The University was over-powering in the sense that it is a huge campus located about half a mile from San Francisco Bay. It is truly a place of pastoral beauty. 1 saw a recent article in the New York Times about a professor who retired. He said that he would miss the purple hills and the beautiful golden sunsets going down over the Golden Gale Bridge. It ' s true. It is an extraordinarily beautiful campus, simply from the aesthetical point of view. The city itself isn ' t. It ' s highly congested, lots of traffic, noise, motor bikes, polluted air from time to time due to the traffic conditions. They have an economic ghetto which is inhabited by blacks, whites, yellow, as well as graduate students. One of our neighbors was Mario Savio, who started this whole thing, beginning with the F.S.M. (Free Speech Movement) in 1963. We didn ' t know him personally; we know him by sight. He lived in an apartment down the street. He was ousted by the University. He was a philosophy major at Berkeley, thrown out in his junior year by the Regents. What I think Savio did was very important in that he put his neck on the line for reform. The need for reform was very great at Berkeley because of the fact that many members of the faculty as well as the administration weren ' t in tune with the needs of the students. Many of them were existing on fat consulting or research fees from the federal government, and they weren ' t meeting the students. They were jumping out windows to avoid meeting students. Il was almost a scandal before Savio stood up and said that this is a university where the teaching-learning process is the essence of this whole damn place. And, as he said, there are men on this faculty who are on and off jets once a week to New York, Chicago, etcetera, and who turn over their classes to teaching fellows. He said what the hell is going on here? So he levele d his attacks against the administrators among others for high handed tactics agamst the students. What Savio had to say, I think, was critically important. He was not a bomb thrower; he was not a nihilist. He was a kid who was concerned about his education because not many others gave a damn. As he said in one of his letters: Oh, yes, the University has a great man in philosophy, but how often do you get to see him? You have to make an appointment three weeks in advance. Then the secretary will probably cancel it about a week before you get there because the man is in New York writing a book or meeting a deadhne for a publisher, and so on. Savio said the only time you see him is sitting rows and rows up in the amphitheatre. You need a pair of binoculars to see him. You hear him once or twice a week delivering a lecture before a couple of thou- sand students. Savio was saying: What the hell kind of an education is this? And so he was pointing out that, plus a lot of other specific short- comings that are apparent in the great urban universities which are anonymous, cold, impersonal. And what Mario Savio was saying in es- sence was, Do not bend, fold or mutilate me. I am a human being. And so it was the call of the humanist in an age not marked by human- ism — an age marked by the computer in which the students are pro- cessed. The students are seen as mindless entities to be pushed through the academic treadmill, and out they go with their degrees. Mario Savio said that ' s not education. That ' s training. I have a tremendous respect for Savio. But unfortunately, I think the revolution has fallen into the hands of the nihilists, the irrationalists, those who want to throw bombs for the sake of throwing bombs, and those who have recoursed to violence. This is not the rational discourse and persuasive methods that Savio counselled. Q. Originally, then, you sympathized with the movement? A. Definitely. Q. Did you see the transition at Berkeley when you were there from the genuine, sincere desire for reform to what is now generally seen in the pubHc ' s mind as an irrational student movement to gain power which they don ' t really need? A. Yes ... I saw the disintegration. I recall one pleasant afternoon in 1967 as I was walking from the bookstore through the campus, I stopped and heard a young orator. I think he was a student, or an ex-student. He was speaking to a group of about 200 people, screaming incoherently, trying to make his points and put them across. This student was a fol- lower of Mao Tse-t ' ung, and he beli eved that the end-all and the be-all. the way the truth, and the light, came from Peking. He was a die-hard Chinese Communist. To my way of thinking, this student was profoundly irrational. But more important than that was the fact that he attempted to subvert democratic principles and democratic procedures. In other words, he wants to destroy the fabric of America by revolution. He wants to destroy rational dialog because he thinks he has the truth. He was very dogmatic: You must listen to me; you must take my word as truth. This is the kind of thing that began to occur, I think, in Berkeley in 1966-67. Then there were also the neo-Trotsky-ites, neo-Marxists of one kind or another — students who do not want to reform the institution, but rather who want to burn it down and destroy it. As a result, you have the open confrontations with faculty and with administrators. So this ele- ment of violence, shall we say, this non-democratic element, probably began about 1966-67 with the entrance of the S.D.S., Third World Liberation Front, especially at San Francisco State. This is another as- pect of the movement running Red. or irrational, as 1 like to put it. These students — S.D.S., Third World Liberation Front, black militants — no longer wish to engage in rational dialog with faculty or with adminis- trators in order to bring about major reforms of the institutions. If they do wish change, they want to bring it about by violence with the use of machine guns and hand grenades. I see striking parallels between the destruction of the universities in Germany in the 1930 ' s with the rise of the Communists on the one hand and the Nazis on the other, and the violence 1 see on the campuses today. The university today is a very visible and vulnerable social institution, and while it may not be destroyed, it can be seriously impaired by the violent elements in the society. In other words, academic freedom is en- dangered because of these nihilists who are attacking the foundations of society, but they ' re leveling their charges against the university, run by a white establishment that is racist, that is capitalistic, materialistic, hypocritical, ad infinitum, ad nauseam. But I am really disillusioned with the way the student revolution has run. Initially, I think I gave whole-hearted intellectual assent to the cause for which Mario Savio was destroyed. And he was destroyed academically. The Regents have passed an informal agreement that Mario Savio will never agam be allowed to matriculate at any public university in the state of California . . . This is the student who got the whole thing going, and now he ' s finished. « Kennedy There is another element in this whole student revolution — the black militants. The Black Panthers, for example, developed in Oakland, which is a neighboring town of Berkeley, in 1965-66. So today you have two forces — two groups trying to bring about change in a violent man- ner: the black militants on the one hand, and the S.D.S. and the Third World Liberation Front on the other. The white radicals and the black militants are the props of the student revolution. Q. Both these elements are lacking at Bloomsburg. Where would you say that Bloomsburg is in this student evolution-into-revolution? A. First of all, I think that coming from Berkeley to Bloomsburg, I have run the course from the twenty-first century into the nineteenth century. I slopped in Massachusetts for a while — perhaps that is the twentieth century. But I think that I have lived in three centuries in less than a year. Professor Rudolph at Williams said that California represents the future in the present. The future of this civilization is now going on in a micro-cosmic way in California. I would say that Berkeley is probably in the vanguard of the California culture of the twenty-first century. But I see reverberations of this California ethic — it ' s even difficult to say it ' s an ethic — it ' s really no ethic. I can see this profoundly affecting American civilization in the next ten to twenty years. Specifically, with respect to Bloomsburg, I can see quick changes coming in the next two or three years with the influx of certain kinds of students to Bloomsburg. In the past, I think Bloomsburg had students coming almost exclusively from small towns, rural backgrounds — stu- dents who are sort of intimidated by the whole intellectual process. They are not at home with ideas. They are being introduced to the world of ideas for the first time in their lives. Perhaps one can sympathize with their reticence, almost in some cases a fear. But in any event, I see in the future, as Bloomsburg enrolls more students coming from Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, our urban centers, along with a greater percent- age of black students, the changes will come quickly. If for example, you have in the future, let ' s say in two years, about 50 black students, and maybe a dozen members of S.D.S., this is all you need, it seems to me, to initiate some dramatic changes. This has been the pattern of rapid change, and at some institutions, violence. For example, at Harvard less than 200 S.D.S. and black militants were in- volved in the confrontation at Cambridge. The same was true at Colum- bia, Brandeis, Chicago, and San Francisco Stale. I can possibly see this taking place at Bloomsburg in about two or three years. ' 5 v ' .- % ' '  m ' editor ' s message The 1969 Obiter is just what its meaning states — a re- flection in passing of the ' 68- ' 69 college year at BSC. Nothing more. Nothing less. It is different from our rigid form yearbooks of the past simply because this year was unique. It could not be accurately recorded in the dated style and format of previous Bloomsburg books. The 1969 Obiter is not a catalog for prospective stu- dents, or a campus guide for parents, or a memorial for departing faculty members, or a brag book for big men on campus. This Obiter is a candid and interpretive study of Bloomsburg as it really was in ' 68 and ' 69. Every page was designed with a reason and for a purpose, even though I was forced to remain with convention in some respects. The members of the college community who are in the know will understand. Many, many sincere thanks to Mr. Robert Haller, my creative advisor. He is the only person at the college who never let me down. Infact, he was more than an advisor. He was the helpful equivalent of a whole staff, and a friend besides. Peace to Mr. Michael Gilroy, my ever-smiling, imagina- tive yearbook representative from Bradbury, Sayles, O ' Neill, our publisher; and to Mr. Charlie Clegg, Brad- bury ' s patient production man in New York. I would also like to thank my pseudo-staff for the work they didn ' t do. Because of them, I learned a great deal about yearbooks . . . and about people. When I was young, I was new and I knew. Now I am not young and I do not know. But I ' m learning pretty damn fast. Toni Matulis, Editor index . .
