THE OBITER Vol XLV MARY FRANCES DOWNEY — EditoT NANCY WURSTER — Assistant Editor DR. E. T. DE VOE — Adviser I FOREWORD There have been many tangiljle changes on the campus of what is now Bloomsburg State College since we entered it four years ago. The 1961 OBITER provides a pic- torial record of those changes. It is. however, much more difficult to convey the less obvious transformation. T ith increased enrollment has come in- creasing opportunities for the students. And yet physical expansion has not lued impersonality. Tlie friendly college on the hill has remained true to tradition. Bloomsburg has always been a pro- fessional institution for the training of teachers. But as we broaden our scope, it is our aim to prepare teachers who are competent outside as well as inside the classroom. This is the clu-onicle of our growth. We hope we have gro Mi in stature as well as size, and that the change is lieyoiid tlie physical. The Editor Edward T. The majesty of the Bloomsburg Beacon at night is a sight familiar to students and travelers alike, while the deep shadows of late summer add to the haunting beauty of these familiar campus scenes. ■■Rear View of Carver Tower ' ■x . ■. Leader THOUGHTS FOR SENIORS We are weavers . . . weaving a huge caipet. Each has his own thread and his own part in the Great Design. The whole pat- tern is not always seen. i)ut it is tliere. Single threads may snap, colors may fade, and the indi- vidual weaver fail in his task; yet the Great Overseer has the master plan ever before his eyes and corrects our petty errors. All our thoughts and actions have purpose. Within the great framework, we will fulfill our tasks. President 18 BOARD OF TRUSTEES SEATED: Hon. Carl H. Fleckenstine. Orangeville. Pa.: Dr. Harvev A. EDWIN KUSER Class President Dear Fellow Graduates: May 28, 1960: the end of a successful beginning. Individually, and together, we, the Class of 1961, leave Bloomsburg State College to seek a new life in our chosen profession. Behind us lay four wonderful college years which are now livins memories, and ahead . . . who can predict what lies ahead? During these four years we have given much to our alma mater. Many of our class members have placed outstanding records in the log book of Bloomsburg athletics. Others have contributed countless hours of work and invaluable ideas, not only to the organizations which we found on our campus as freshmen, but to new organizations and, of course, to our fellow students. We have been proud to carry the name and the spirit of Bloomsburg State College to all parts of our state, and we have carried it proudly. We have, however, taken from old Bloom much more than we have given: friends, maturity, prestige, memories, a sense of accomplishment, innumerable experiences, valuable contacts, and, of most importance, an education. With these tools we will go forth from our apprenticeship to assume astounding responsibilities. We, the leaders of today, will influence, each in his own small way, the nation of tomorrow. We have the tools of an educated mind, let us use them effectively, and — as is written in a daily pledge we will make as teachers, ' under God — let us use them with humility. Now, as our college days come to a close, we are faced with the task of saying good-by. This is indeed difficult, but let us remember that our days at Bloomsburg are not done; they will live with us throughout our lives, for they are a part of us. The foundation we have acquired here will act as a launching pad from which we may attack obstacles barring us from fulfillment of our duties, ideas, and ideals. As president of, and on behalf of the Class of 1961, I wish to extend sincere appreciation and thanks to those, who through a great expenditure of time, effort, and patience have made our years here successful: our parents, our class advisers, the faculty, the president, the Board of Trustees, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Although I have tried to show it through my actions this past year, I now wish to formally thank you for the privilege and honor of serving as your president. With you, as we part, go my best wishes for success and happiness in whatever you may encounter in the future. May God be with vou. Edwin C. The CGA Standing Committees assist the officers of CGA in making it a functioning as well as a formulating organization. The committee chairmen are appointed by the vice-president of the as- sociation for a term of one year and are usually selected because of previous experience in that par- ticular type of committee work. They are responsible to the vice-president for a monthly report on the activities of their individual committees. He, in turn, reports on the progress of each committee at the council meeting of CGA. Individually, each committee has a specific job to do. The student body may make suggestions or offer advice to the chairmen. The total picture shows, however, that committee duties somewhat overlap.
