But the colors we cheer, And the names we revere, Belong to Maroon and Gold. There ' s a glorious past, There are names that ivill last, There ' s a spirit that sends a call . Here ' s a team to defend, Here ' s our pledge to the end, To the colors that must not fall. All together now for Bloom shurg Take the colors to the goal... However, they did come through with a better than average six win, four loss record. The Huskies were able to take their teacher college rivals in stride, beating West Chester, Mansfield. Kutztown and Millersville. but losing to Lock Haven twice in bitterly fought contests. Track 1953 Mr. Shelly ' s track and field men were unable to come up with a victory last spring, but what was lacking in team scoring was made up by the skill of several freshmen who carried most of the load. These four men averaged ten points apiece per meet. Using them as a nucleus, the Husky track squad should come up with something in ' 54. In this volume we have tried to capture Bloomsburg — everything it is — every- thing it stands for. In doing so we have revised many strongly embedded procedures: we have abandoned or supplemented the others. We have followed life here as it occurred — through its environment of flaming color, of coldness and white, of blossoming greenness. Here are people, buildings, and scenery. In a year from now. a decade from now, with God ' s help a generation from now, pick up a slightly worn volume entitled Obiier 1954. If in leafing through its pages you suddenly pause a moment and smile a lit- tle, or laugh, or even sigh — if the three ingredients we have included start arranging themselves in a sweeping flood of memories — then our work will not have been in vain, and any purpose we might have had will be com- pletely fulfilled. I was tremendously pleased to learn that this year ' s class will include more than 150 more future teachers. I have always felt, based upon my personal experiences, that teaching is one of the most rewarding of all professions. It is assuredly one of the most important. I congratulate each and every one of you. both upon the completion of your undergraduate work and upon the high purpose and dedication with which you have chosen this magnificent profession. Your opportunities are limitless and the challenge is almost beyond belief. I send you every good wish. Sincerely, ' MJZ.. Kj2a,at:z EDWARD MARTIN 124 THE HONORABLE JAMES H. DUFF United Stales Senator To the Class of 1954: I am very glad to have this opportunity to congratulate you, the new graduates of the State Teachers College at Bloomsburg. It is heartening to know that over 150 well-trained young people will be joining the teaching force in our Commonwealth. As a Pennsylvanian I am proud of the high standards of education which prevail throughout the public school system in our state and I fully appreciate the spirit of dedication and self-sacrifice which has inspired many of you to become teachers. Your imprint upon the future is assured from the moment you first step into a classroom. I know you will accept the challenge in the fine tradition of which your Alma Mater can truly boast. Sincerely, r -f JAMES H. DUFF 125 THE HONORABLE JOHN S. FINE Governor Commonwealth of Pennsylvania To the Class of 1954: I have always believed that the real hope of democracy lies in education. There is no more important work than that which good teachers do in guiding young Americans along the paths of learning. The teacher ' s task requires sound men and women who think clearly, who are guided by high ethical standards, who teach with an honesty of purpose, and who are loyal to their high duty and responsibility. These characteristics of the good teacher give dignity to the teaching profession. You who are about to enter the classrooms of our Commonwealth as the teachers of Pennsylvania ' s children face a wonderful and exciting challenge. On your shoulders will rest the responsibility for building into good citizens the young people who will advance our Commonwealth and nation to a higher point than we have ever known before, and who will at the same time preserve the heritage of our cleiiKicracy. To each of you at Bloomsburg, my best wishes for success and happiness in your chosen field. Cordially, JOHN S. FINE 126 THE HONORABLE FRANCIS B. HAAS State Superintendent of Public Instruction A Message for the Graduating Class of 1954: To you, the graduates of the Class of 1954, I pass on the challenging message contained in a curious document written in 1798 but not published until one hundred and twenty-four years later — in 1922. William Manning, a New England farmer, wrote an essay with the title The Key of Libberty. Mr. Manning ' s argument was compressed into these words: Learning and Knowledge is essential to the preservation of Libberty and unless we have more of it amongue us we Cannot Seporte our Libbertyes Long. In these crucial mid-century years, America is looking to the schools to make our youth socially competent, morally responsible, and unswervingly patriotic citi- zens. It is gratifying to know that year after year your Alma Mater is sending forth well-prepared teachers to render the service needed by our Commonwealth and by our Nation. My sincerest congratulations and best wishes to you all. Cordially, 5. ; FRANCIS B. HAAS 127 w kf - r To the Seniors of 1954: Life is now your college. As you go from your Alma Mater, you take with you the hopes, prayers, and well wishes of not only your parents, friends, and class- mates, but also of those whom you leave behind at Bloomsburg. In the profession of teaching, please remember that in the beginning the student is more interested in the teacher than what the teacher teaches. Human relationships are more important than the facts written in books. To have had a part in your college years has been a gratifying ex- perience of Harvey A. Andruss, President. 128 DR. HARVEY A. ANDRUSS President 129 DR. THOMAS P. NORTH Dean of Instruction To the members of the Class of 1954 : This message is written at the very turn of the New Year, a year that will be memorable in the lives of many who read this Obiter. To some, it will be a year of gladness and accomplishment: to others, one of sadness, and in too many cases a time of failure, because of inability for self discipline. To all of you we extend out best wishes, and pray that you will strive for your share of the riches of the immortals. Sincerely yours. «.v THOMAS P. NORTH Dean of Instruction Dr. North — twenty-five years of service to Bloomsburg. 130 ELIZABETH B. MILLER B.S., M.Ed. Dean of Women JOHN A. HOCH A.B., M.A. Dean of Men To the Class of 1954: Congratulations to you who in a very fe)v weeks will change your title from student to faculty. May your training at Bloomsburg lead you to awaken in your students a knowledge of their po- tentialities and help you to guide them toward ef- fecting those potentials. Then may you earn the satisfying titles — friendly, understanding, patient, helpful — the titles awarded without fanfare to a successful teacher by his grateful students. Sincerely yours, To the Class of 1954: Commencement is a time for looking back, and this book will help you to remember the high spots of vour life at Bloomsburg. Commencement is also a time for looking ahead. We who have followed you through these last four years will miss you, and we hope you will return often as alumni. As you leave to measure yourselves against the de- mands of life, we wish you that real success which satisfies the heart. Sincerely yours, ' i?%:xu- Zl h% ' ELIZABETH B. MILLER Dean of Women JOHN A. EARL A. GEHRIG Senior Class Advisor My fellow graduates: You are entitled to be proud that within a short time you will be bringing to a close your college career at Bloomsburg. Many sacrifices have been made by you and your families in order that you could reach this accomplished goal. May I be one of the first to offer my sincere congratulations. With the sacrifices have come many rewards. It will not be long until you look back upon the many happy memories that come from within these ivied walls. Bloomsburg will leave a mark upon you that can never be erased; likewise, you will leave behind your records — some to be excelled, others never to be equaled, but none that can be replaced. You are about to embark into a bigger school of learning than the one you are leaving. Abraham Lincoln once said, I will prepare myself, and my chance will come. The years ahead offer many challenges to you to use the knowledge you have gained here. Use it wisely! Most of you will be helping others to improve their worth. With extraordinary perseverance, many experiments, and a great deal of patience, you can master your problems and attain all of your goals. I want to thank you for the honor and privilege it was to serve as your class president. It is my heartfelt wish that life may be filled with much happiness for you and yours.
