Even though there seemed never to be enough articles to fill the endless pages, the task was completed and the paper finally taken to press. Proof that the hours were well spent is found in the many finished products turned out by the capable staff. Everyone involved gained new friend- ships and a greater knowledge of journalism. When husky William took the ball, beneath his brawny arm. They had two extra men to ring the ambulance alarm. Bill hit the line and ran the ends like some mad bull amuck. . The other team would shiver when they saw him start to buck. And when some rival tackler tried to block his dashing pace, On waking up, he'd ask, Who drove that truck across my face? Bill had the speed-Bill had the weight-Bill never bucked in vain: From goal to goal he whizzed along while fragments strewed the plain. . And there had been a standing bet, which no one tried to call, That he cguld make his distance through a ten-foot granite wall. When he wound up his college course each student's heart was sore. They wept to think bull-throated Bill would sock the line no more. Not so with William-in his dreams he saw the field of Fame, Where he would buck to glory in the swirl of Life's big game. So, with the sheepskin tucked beneath his arm in football style, Bill put on steam and dashed into the thickest of the pile: With eyes ablaze he sprinted where the laureled highway led- When Bill woke up his scalp hung loose and knots adorned his head. He tried to run the ends of life, but with rib-crashing toss A rent collector tackled him and threw him for a loss. And when he switched his course again and dashed into the line The massive Guard named Failure did a toddle on his spine. Bill was no quitter, so he tried a buck in higher gear, But left guard Envy broke it up and stood him on his ear. Whereat he aimed a forward pass, but in two vicious bounds Big center Greed slipped through a hole and rammed him out of bounds. But one day, when the Field of Fame goal seemed dim, The wise old coach, Experience, came up and spoke to him. Old Boy, he said, the main point now before you win your bout Is keep on bucking Failure till you've worn that Diker out! You'll find the road is long and rough, with soft spots far apart, Where only those can make the grade who have the Uphill Heart. And when they stop you with a thud or halt you with a crack, Let Courage call the signals as you keep on coming back. Keep coming back, and though the world may romp across your spine. Let every game's end find you still upon the battling meg For when the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name, He writes-not that you won or lost-but how you Dlayed the Game. Charles Creasy-HB SENIOR MANAGER Gerald Krum FOOTBALL I 95 5 Bloomsburg High School was represented this year on the gridiron by one of the most spirited and scrappiest bunch of fellows ever to step into the Red and White uniform. The team, as a whole, fell a little short on the weight side of the ledger, but when it came to fighting for the Alma Mater they loved and believed in, they could be compared to nothing less than giants. A good example of this was the Selinsgrove game played at Northumberland. It was rough going, that brisk night of October 21, as the Selinsgrove boys scored a touchdown late in the second period on a nice run through a surprised Panther defense. The Seals, however, missed the all important extra point and the score stood 6 to 0. The Panthers went off the field at half-time, a mighty- depressed looking bunch of boys. Whether at intermission Coach Charles Cox said some certain words to fire his gridders is not known even by the players themselves. One thing is certain though, the Panthers were an entirely different team that second half. They fought for every thing they were worth! At First the Selinsgrove defense held as before, but the Panthers kept plugging away, and pretty soon holes started to open in the line. Quarterback Ronnie Hileman's passes started to click, and with less than two minutes remaining to play, fullback Reg Arnold, following stonewall-like interference, returned a Selinsgrove punt back to the Seal's own twenty yard line. It was at this point that the Red and White spirit really payed off, for after gain- ing yardage enough through the line for a first down, Ron Hileman connected on an aerial to joe Miller over the goal line. Suspense mounted to an all season high for quarterback Ron Hyde. Not having tried a placement kick in varsity com- petition before, he came off the bench to attempt the all important extra point. The well built sophomore acted calm, cool, and' collected under the terrific tension. The ball was snapped from center and place on the tee. The cheers of the crowd died to tense silence. But then there it went, squarely between the uprights. The line had held, the backs had blocked, and the quiet sophomore had done his job letter perfect. The final score: Bloomsburg 7, Selinsgrove 6. Emotions flew high that night, with both the players and the loyal fans who saw that unfor- gettable late minute of play. Truly that night the Panthers looked like champions. Yes, this Fighting team of Coaches Charles Cox, Edward Kriner, William Troutman, john Babb, and Eugene Morrison will linger long in the memories of the graduating class it repre- sented so stout-heartedly, the Class of 1956.
