BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Board of Directors consists of seven prominent business men of Blooms- burg. Aside from their monthly meetings, they contribute much time in the inter- est of the school. Few people realize the efforts of these men and how much they have clone for us. They have helped to make our high school days ones that We will cherish forever. ' On behalf of the high school, the senior class dedicates this page to tl9ie B0ard of Directors, thanking them for all they have done for us in the past and wishing them success in the future. ' are nm.: 6 5 3 5 s Q4 va JI i In MESSAGES FROM OUR ADMINISTRATORS Progress is measured by change in all things for that which is good or at least better than the present or past. It is our earnest hope that your gradu- ation from the Bloomsburg High School can justly be termed progress. That you will in turn lend your best efforts in a changing world to the accomplishment of that which is good. Sincerely, J. CLAIRE PATTERSON, Pffllflifdl Things have changed since this time last year. The 52-20 club has disbanded. Folks are beginning to realize that with civic rewards come responsibilities. Yours is a precious heritage to come on the scene at this time. The threat to our national security is lessening. You need not enter the Armed Services. You can select the path you wish to trod and the progress you make along that path will, in a large measure, depend upon the ef- fort you put into your work. You can help build an America of which we can be proud-one which en- joys the rewards of good government and also honors the responsibilities of good citizenship. I.. P. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY September, IQ44. saw Hloomsburg High School open its friendly doors to one of the most active classes ever to matriculate at Bloomsburg. This fall our foot- ball team was coached by Mr. Ben Pollock. Our class was well represented on the Varsity football team that won five games, lost three, and tied one. Our tradi- tional Thanksgiving Day game was played at Danville in the snow, but Blooms- burg came out on top with a 13-O score. just before the last football game Mr. Pollock entered the Navy and Mr. Golder took his place. Our jayvee basketball tcam captured the Susquehanna League title for our high school in twelve wins. and three losses. We sold candy at the basketball games to earn money for our class. The Varsity basketball team won the Susquehanna League Championship for the fifth time in eight years. Some of us participated in the All School Play. The Family Portrait, the Band Concert, and the Gym Demonstration. Our class advisors who were to guide us throughout our three years were Mr. Schell and Miss Rowman. XVe elected the following officers: Beverly Cole, presidentg Marion George, vice-presidentg 'loan Shaffer, secretary, and Gloria Marks, his- torian. Miss Spudis took over the home making class and Mr. Freed the music department and the band. Doyle Edgar and Harry Gray left our class to enlist in the United States Navy. Our junior year will especially be remembered because a few weeks before it opened Vtforld War ll came to an end. VVith the opening of school, there were many changes in the faculty. Mr. Hidlay took over the boys' physical education classes and Mrs. Bader instructed the girls, Miss NVhitenight having left to get married. Mr. Eunson became industrial arts teacher and Mr. Lewis taught voca- tional agriculture. Mr. Reed and Miss Eddinger Filled the positions in the com- mercial department left vacant by Mr. Brown and Mr. Shutt when they entered the Army, and Mr. IE. T. McCormick directed the band, and took over the music classes. The Orangeville High School was discontinued and the pupils were sent Cof.'tinufd my page QI 14 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS AND ADVISORS Sc-sited, loft to right: G. Gensemer. M. Wright, M. Laubach, E. 'N-'-. THE BAND Our band, under the direction of Rlr. li. T. lXlcCormick is led by the baton twirlers and flag swingers, an organization of which we are proud. They were a vision of color and splendor in all of our football games, and were ready and will- ing to serve our school and community at all times. Under the baton of Mr. E. T. McCormick, exchange concerts with neighbor- ing schools were made possible. Another highlight in their activities during the year was participation in the program at Bucknell commemorating Bucknell's 100th anniversary. At the beginning of the year officers were elected from among the members. They were an asset to Mr. McCormick in managing this 105-piece musical organiza- tion. The oflicers were: President, james Lehmang vice president, Donald Doveg secretary, Judy Underwoodg student director, Donald lierningerg librarian, Ralph Robbinsg custodians, james Ferguson and Edward hlordan 36 GIRLS' CHORUS First Row, Left to Right M. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Panthers really fought their way to the top this year to win the Susquehanna League Lfliampionship and the right to enter district four playoffs in which only the topanotch teams Jlav. I H During the season the Red and VVhite Cagers played six pre-season games and sixteen league games. ln the pre-season games the Panthers defeated Berwick twice, which is an unusual occurrence and lost only one league game which was to Milton. The Panthers, how- ever, faced Milton in the playoff for the Susquehanna League and defeated the Milton tive 40-33 to clinch the championship. . They next tackled Sayre and won by a 38-36 margin to put them in the District Four Championship playoff with Williamsport. The towering W'illian1sport squad checked the Golder Quintet with a 39-19 score to put Bloomsburg out of the playoffs. In an after-season meeting Robert Watts was elected honorary captain. The team loses six of its members this year: Stanley LeVan, Roland Eveland, Bob VVatts, Al Newhart, Ralph Moyle, and Billy May, but Coach Golder will have six from the yarsity back next year and some good material coming up from the Junior Varsity to work With. Coach Golder has done a superb job at coaching these boys and has shown that a cham- pionship team is no accident for he has produced six out of the ten years that Bloom has been in the league. He deserves a lot of credit and thanks for the time and effort he spends with the boys for the fellows did a great job and played a season to be long remembered at B.H.S. 42 Moyle, D. Bauman, S. OUR CUACHES AND FACULTY MANAGERS Along the sidelines, out of the spotlight, are our coaches and faculty managers who have worked long and hard to put our teams on top of the sports' ladder. l.ong before the playing seasons open faculty managers, llrown and Campbell, are busy scheduling games for their respective teams and getting all equipment in first-class condition, These are not easy tasks and demand long hours of hard work on the part of the managers with little recognition for their outstanding services. The molding of a squad into a smooth-playing. game-winning team depends on the coach. Coaches Colder and l'ollock have proved themselves to be top-notch in the coaching held for both have produced not only winning teams but champion teams this year and the coming baseball season looks very promising. Like the managers. they also begin Working with their squads long before the playing season startsg drilling and criticizing and drilling some more until the play- ers are thoroughly familiar with the fundamentals and the rough spots are smoothed out. This often requires long hours of drill and the occasional missing of a meal. but the finished playing teams have been a credit to their coaches and their school. Both coaches are aided by interested and enthusiastic assistants who have been important factors determining the success of the teams. Un the football field Mr, l'ollock's assistants were Mr. Charles Cox and Mr. Maynard Pennington. Un the basketball court lllr. Golder's assistants were lllr. NVilliam Reed and Mr. lien Pol- lock. And on the baseball diamond, Mr. Golder's assistant was Mr. Harold Ilidlay. In dedicating this page to the coaching staff and the faculty managers we wish to thank them for the splendid job they have done in the sports field for ll. ll. S. and we, the graduating class, hope they have as much success with their teams in future years as they have had: during the 46-47 season. 48 FEATURES 4 Most Most Most Most SENIOR POPULARITY POLL Popular Girl Popular Boy Attractive Girl Most Attractive Boy Most Cheerful Girl Most Cheerful Boy Most Talented Girl Talented Boy Cutest Couple Best Girl Dancer Best Boy Dancer Class Apple Polisher Senior Coquette Drugstore Cowboy Best Dressed Girl Best Dressed Boy Class Brain Most Fickle Girl Most Fickle Boy Feminine Wit Masculine VVit Pin-Up Girl Pin-Up Boy Personality Plus CGirlj Personality Plus CBoyj Shyest Girl Shyest Boy Most Musical Girl Most Musical Boy Most Athletic Girl Most Class Class Athletic Boy Pessimist tGirlj Pessimist tljoyj First Beverly Cole john Babb Edith Neyhard Stanley LeVan Sherewood Deiterich Ned Tressler Jean Gorrey Phil Flad Ducky and Harris Helen Polk James Lehman Barbara Niesley Myrtle Nevel Roy Ralston Audrey Rehm james Lehman Gloria Marks Phyllis Eck Wayne Welliver Sherewood Deiterich Phil F lad Dawn Craig Roland Eveland Mary Jane Dorsey john Babb Caroline Berlin Henry Kapper Kathryn Gunter James Lehman Gloria Marks Roland Eveland Polly McHenry John VVhite Girl Most Likely to Succeed Nancy Stevens Boy Most Likely to Succeed Carl Moore 50 Runner-Up Barbara Niesley Roland Eveland Natalie Laubach, Nancy Hippensteel James Lehman Laverne Mayer, Beverly Cole Wayne Welliver Kathryn Gunter James Lehman Bev and Dune Dawn Craig Donald Dove Joan Shaffer, Barbara Niesley Gene Raup Myrtle Nevel Robert Watts Barbara Gensemer Joan Shaffer Roy Ralston Myrtle Nevel Edward Mordan Joyce Ash Henry Kapper Natalie Laubach Ned Tressler Edith Neyhard Donald Ent Nancy Stevens Phil Flad Selma Shaffer Stanley LeVan Anna Mae Reichert Richard Kressler Barbara Gensemer Phil Flad . i M 5. VVe, being of sound mind, also bequeath all the fun, comradeship, and good luck which we. the class of '47, have had during our stay in good ole B. ll. S. to our underclassmcn. 89 90 Continued from pageil-4 T it here to school. We welcomed this addition to our class and found many new friends. Shortly after school opened we elected the class officers: john Babb, presidentg james Lehman, vice-president, Sherwood Deiterich, secretary, and Beverly Cole, historian. Many of our class took part in the All School Play, The Night of January 16th. Two of our teachers left during the year, Mr. Schell was forced to leave because of his health and was replaced by Mr. Kistler. Mr. Letterman gave up the school teaching profession and Mr. Hidlay took over the democracy class and Mr. Colder took over the boys' gym classes. At Christ- mas our class sponsored a Holiday Dance on December 26th. The gym was decorated with greens and Christmas lights and looked very nice. As host to the senior class at the annual Junior-Senior Prom, we held our dance on May 2-lth. The gym was beautifully decorated in a garden motif, with a wishing well in the center of the floor. And then all of a sudden we were seniors. VVe were eager and curious to see what this last year held in store for us. Our class officers were elected as follows: john Babb, president, Robert NVatts, vice-presidentg Judy Underwood, secretary, and Kathryn Gunter, historian. Probably the most important football happening of the year was the winning over Berwick 20-6, the Hrst in twenty-four years. The football team, with Mr. Pollock as their coach, had an undefeated season, winning nine games and tieing one. The basketball team won Fifteen games rut of sixteen played and with this record entered the P. I. A. A. playoffs. This year saw Mr. Hidlay being moved to ninth grade to teach civics and Miss Pensyl brought up to twelfth grade to teach democracy and history. Mr. Shutt and M r. Brown returned to the commercial department. Many of the seniors took part in the Senior Class Play, The Little Foxes, which was a great success. The liand Concert was enjoyed by everyone who attended. At long last the year drew to a close. Graduation day arrived quickly. A chapter in our lives was ending, but a new one was there to take its place-that of going out into the world. As we left our heritage with the junior class, we went out confident that we could face any problem the world might offer us. They had a seven game schedule of which they won three, tied two, and lost two. One of their losses came at the hands of a strong Montgomery Varsity eleven, while their biggest game was their win over Ber- wick on the Bulldogs' home field. The boys played inspired ball in every game. They proved that they really had the fighting spirit and many new stars were brought into view for next year's varsity squad. 92 JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1940-1947 liusketlmull season enxtetl with Z1 double-cliutnpitnn,hip, not to he onttlone lay their big brothers on the varsity, the junior varsity eztgers turned in il bttsqtisltiztinzi League tfhznnpionsliip, too.
