Limestone has been the building material and the economic means to secure the basic ele- ments of our society. We, the senior class of 1957, have been borne by that society. Our Bloomington community has provided the facilities to produce responsible and respectful citizens. Bolsterctl by those community gifts, our foundations should remain intact! in... The S TU D E NT COUNCIL adopted a Bloomington High Creed and Code of Ethics. This outline for a happy and successful high school career encouraged student conduct that would command re- spect. The Creed encouraged punctu- aliry, honesty, self-discipline, and participation in extra curricular ac- tivities in order to prepare for lead- ership. The Code encouraged re- spect for rules and regulations of the school, respect for property belonging to others, and diligence for school work. In the Code of Ethics the students agreed to apply the Golden Rule during school and community functions. Page tweniy-two The S T U D E N T COUNCIL sponsored April in Paris, the an- nual All-School Dance, which was conducted on April 5 in the B.H.S. gymnasium. Bright colors and flow- ers painted the atmosphere of spring while the BIG FOUR featuring Marvin Chandler, a B.H.S. gradu- ate, played music. To finance the All-School Dance the Student Council sponsored after game rec- ord dances during the winter. The Student Council in addition sponsored several charity drives and a clean-up week. B.H.S. students donated 1265 pounds of clothing to the Save the Children Federation, a relief fund for needy children all over the world. With this thought in mind, the club presented a three act play, Brother Goosef' a Christmas play for convo- cation, a one act play for Drama Night, and several other one act plays for various club meetings and social functions. Each member of the club looks forward to the presen- tation of the gold engraved loving cups which are given to the two outstanding senior dramatists at the end of the year. Another tradition of the club is one concern- ing two old make-up sweatshirts. Each year the present owners pass the shirt down to the junior boy and girl they consider the most outstanding. Some of the more outstanding meetings were: a masquerade party, at the end of which Della Austin, past president of Proscenium Players, told of her dramatic activities fol- lowing high school, a talent show presented by mem- bers of the clubg and a demonstration by members of past dramatics classes portraying the diiferent aspects of the theater. There were crew-heads for each of these divisions to supervise and aid crew members in their jobs. To be admitted to this staff a person had to show a good citizen- ship rating and an added interest in the staff. Members not only gained experience from working on the Technical Staff, but they also re- ceived points toward membership into Thespians. Mr. William T. Voorhies was the sponsor. Qualifications for entry into this organization are based on scholarship, service, lead- ership, and character. Each spring seniors in the upper fourth of their graduating class and juniors from the upper ten per cent of their class are elected by the B.H.S. faculty. After the spring election, the new members are initiated at a senior high convo- cation. Since the founding of the B.H.S. Chapter in 1927, the membership has grown to nearly 800 members. A formal banquet was conducted directly before the Junior-Senior Prom. This was the only social event of the year for the National Honor Society. Oflicers were elected in the late spring. Miss Lucile Coffey was the society's sponsor. Page fifty National Honor Society. Ram' one: Rebecca Armstrong, Joan Benavole, 'Onva Boshears, 'Nancy Branum, 'Karel Brown, Thomas Cook. To be elected to Quill and Scroll, a student must rank in the upper third of his class and must be recommended by either the OPTIMIST sponsor or the GOTHIC sponsor. The meetings for the Quill and Scroll were on call. The main project each year is to publish and sell the Last Words of the seniors on honor day. Two loving cups are presented at the close of each year to the outstanding Thespians. Along with this presentation at the annual banquet, the new members are initiated. The activities for the troupe this year included the presentation of two one-act plays. One of these plays was given for Drama Night in May, and the other one was presented for convocation in February of this year. This year's convocation play was entitled The Best There Is. This band was primarily established for the purpose of developing the junior high school student's musical knowledge and ability. This year a challenge determined what position each player had in his section. The band marched around the town square in the Halloween Parade and played popular music at a pops concert for their parents. The members of the band joined the other B.H.S. bands, orchestras, and choral groups in the Spring Music Festival. Officers for the past year were Paul Hazel, presi- dentg Julia Binkley, vice-president, John Stillions, secretary, John Bruner, treasurerg Nan Volle and David Frye, librarians, Carol O'Malley and Dee Ann Gregory, assistant librarians. Mr. Edgar L. Axsom was the director. The C BAND was organized to absorb the re- cent expansion of music in the metropolitan schools. This band is composed entirely of junior high musicians. Since the band served mainly as a training unit, it had very few outside activities. It did, how- ever, participate in the Spring Music Festival along with the other music groups at Bloomington High School. According to a system devised by the metropolitan music department, any junior high beginner may try out for the C Band. If he qualifies, and after his instrumental abilities and techniques have improved to the accepted standards, he may advance to the B Band. When he gets in high school, he may then go on to the A Band if he is capable of playing the material. Officers this year were Steve Chitwood, president, Ramona Trisler, vice-president, Joann Parker, sec- retary, Deanna Fiscus, treasurer, Ruth Wiley, libra- riang and Bonnie Gordon, assistant librarian. Mr. Edgar L. Axsom was the director. The JUNIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA was organ- ized primarily for training purposes. Under the direc- tion and instruction of Mr. Donald Neal, they de- veloped their musical talents. To do this the orchestra was divided into two groups which met separately two days a week. These groups, which were called advance and intermediate, totaled thirty-five in number. To gain admittance to the Junior High Orchestra, students must know certain scales, and they must be able to sight read proficiently. The young musicians have on the most part been studying since the fifth grade and are continuing this study by way of class instruction. There were four sections: violin, viola, cello, and bass. Each section met after school once a week where the students received individual attention. This year, the Junior High Orchestra gave a con- cert with the Senior High Orchestra. They also gave a pops concert and participated in the Spring Music Festival. Junior Orchestra. Ronnie Brine- gar, sophomore, made the Panthers' only touchdown. Due to fumbleitis and slippery fingers, the Pan- thers were defeated by the Vincennes Alices 14-0. The Panthers started fast, moving the ball to the Alices 19, but the fumble bug gave the ball back to the Alices. The Panthers ended the contest, as they started it, with another fumble. The main objective of a program such as this is to provide a training experience for junior high boys. Mr. Marvin Groh, coach, explained that the Athletic Department was primarily interested in fundamentals and drills for boys of this age rather than regular competition. The profit of this program is realized when boys make the varsity team at younger ages. The EIGHTH GRADE BASKETBALL TEAM along its regular season had a record of ten wins and Junior Football. Unlike the other junior high sports the basketball teams have a regular season and play in regular competition. Coach Ray Anderson had to limit his team to thirty boys who composed both the seventh and eighth grade teams. One of the most thrilling games of the season was the contest between Columbus and the B. H. S. Eighth Grade Team. Jim Sylvester made a basket while lying on the floor which helped the Panthers come out on the winning end of a 29-28 final score. l l l Eighth grade, 4 minutes 59.1 secondsg and seventh grade, 5 minutes and 36 seconds were the top records turned in by the JUNIOR CROSS-COUNTRY boys as they ran their annual tournament at the Cascades Course. There was no cross-country season for the junior highers, but a call was made for all junior high boys who were interested in running a cross-country race against other members of their class. In the eighth grade race, Larry Simpson turned in thc fastest time. His brother, Jimmy Simpson, copped the seventh grade race with ease. This program is to stimulate interest in cross- country among the junior high boys. Fifty-six boys entered the JUNIOR HIGH IN- TRAMURAL WRESTLING tournament this year. Practice and tournaments The main objective of the program was to deter- mine whether a boy had enough interest in wrestling to enter the sport when he becomes a freshman. Any junior high boy interested in participating in a wrestling meet with boys his own age and weight was taught the basic fundamentals of wrestling dur- ing the two weeks period preceding the contest. The tournament began the week after the regular varsity season closed. The boys were coached by Clifford Two-Bit Myers. The champion and runners-up in each pound class of the finals were awarded ribbons for their efforts. Junior Cross-country. Rau' our: Tom Taylor, Larry Simpson. Edgar Smith. Little clothcspin dolls dressed in crepe paper and dancing on little clouds were the centerpieces of the many tables. Tracy Branum and Larry Ryser were crowned King and Queen by last year's royalty, Karen Hill and Charles Miller, upon the throne made of fluffy white and backed by a blue rotating star which was made by Joyce Disney. The Innovators furnished the music until inter- mission when prom goers listened to entertainment by Allenc Chandler, Wfilliam Stockwell, Richard Tardy, Larry Fleener, Becky Bryant, and Larry Ryser. Committee heads were Bill Minor, band: David Walnipler, programg Paddy Engle, theme, Sharon johnson, programs, co-chairmen Bonnie Flora and Robert Ellis, decorations: and Becky Armstrong, re- freshments. Xt Es 5 seine? i Tracy Iiranum and larry Ryser are seated on the throne after being crowned junior-Senior Prom Queen and King by Charles Miller and Karen Hill. ,luniori and seniors dance to the music of the Innovators at the junior-Senior Prom.
