Get that priming press ready to roll was a call heard every two weeks at B.H.S. as another issue of the Optimist was ready to go to press. A free copy of the school paper is one of the many services which Bloomington High offers its students. The Optimist staff works long and hard to put out a paper that the student body will appreciate. This bi-monthly paper came out 16 times during the school year. Carla johantgen, editor-in-chief, was the foreman of the staff. She supervised all the work that was done and gave advice where needed. Helping her was the managing editor, Ladonna Higgins. The Optimist provides the students with news of school life. In addition, cartoons and several columns have been added this year. One of the separate functions of the Optimist staff is the News Bureau. This department sends school news to the two downtown papers. Six reporters made up the News Bureau staff with Sylvia Hutcher- son the editor-in-chief. Separate newspaper editors were chosen every six weeks, and it was their job to see that assignments were posted and to make sure stories were taken down to the newspapers.

These familiar words rang out in room 414 as the Gothic was in the process of being assembled. Work on the 1955 Gothic began long before the opening of school. Meetings were held in the summer to help plan for the Gothic. Also at these meetings, the colors for the 1955 Gothic were selected and a budget was set up. The taking of numerous pictures which make up the Gothic began with the opening of school. Also, advertisements were secured and a very successful subscription campaign was launched during the first semester. Later began the task of writing the copy. The second se- mester began with much hard work, and by April, the 1955 Gothic was well on its way to the press. On hand to help the student staff members with any problems that might arise were Mr. Roger Ingle and Mr. Charles Bundy, the advisers. Students who did outstanding work were rewarded by being elected members of Quill and Scroll, a journalism honorary society.
