The camera captured glances of clubs and activities, mem- bers of the faculty, sports, underclass students, and the members of the senior class. It is to the members of the Class of 1955 that the members of the Gothic Staff humbly dedicate the Gothic. The staff hopes that the Gothic will serve as a reminder of the school year and will be a book that will be cherished forever. To all graduating seniors, the Gothic Staff says, Good luck. Bloomington's opponent in this homecoming game was the Wiley of Terre Haute team. Instead of a regular pep session, the senior class sponsored a homecoming parade. All classes assembled in the Seminary Circle and marched to town in the order of classes. The parade was led by the band after which came the football team, queen candidates, the cheerleaders, and the football coaches. While in town, the students were led in cheers by the varsity cheerleaders. Each class made signs and posters urging the B.H.S. team on. These familiar words rang out in room 414 as the Gothic was in the process of being assembled. Work on the 1955 Gothic began long before the opening of school. Meetings were held in the summer to help plan for the Gothic. Also at these meetings, the colors for the 1955 Gothic were selected and a budget was set up. The taking of numerous pictures which make up the Gothic began with the opening of school. Also, advertisements were secured and a very successful subscription campaign was launched during the first semester. Later began the task of writing the copy. The second se- mester began with much hard work, and by April, the 1955 Gothic was well on its way to the press. On hand to help the student staff members with any problems that might arise were Mr. Roger Ingle and Mr. Charles Bundy, the advisers. Students who did outstanding work were rewarded by being elected members of Quill and Scroll, a journalism honorary society. Get that priming press ready to roll was a call heard every two weeks at B.H.S. as another issue of the Optimist was ready to go to press. A free copy of the school paper is one of the many services which Bloomington High offers its students. The Optimist staff works long and hard to put out a paper that the student body will appreciate. This bi-monthly paper came out 16 times during the school year. Carla johantgen, editor-in-chief, was the foreman of the staff. She supervised all the work that was done and gave advice where needed. Helping her was the managing editor, Ladonna Higgins. The Optimist provides the students with news of school life. In addition, cartoons and several columns have been added this year. One of the separate functions of the Optimist staff is the News Bureau. This department sends school news to the two downtown papers. Six reporters made up the News Bureau staff with Sylvia Hutcher- son the editor-in-chief. Separate newspaper editors were chosen every six weeks, and it was their job to see that assignments were posted and to make sure stories were taken down to the newspapers. Good character is the point stressed by Silver Triangle. The Silver Triangle is a branch of the Young Women's Christian Association and is an organization for fresh- man and sophomore girls. One of the main projects of the Silver Triangle was sponsoring the popular King and Queen Contest at the Winter Carnival. Other projects planned for the year were a style show and raising money for the swimming pool fund. Also, a social event was held both semesters. A program was sometimes given at the meetings which were held each month. Many times these programs showed ways in which a girl could improve herself both mentally and morally. In the spring, the sopho- more members of the Silver Triangle were invited to be the guests of the Blue Triangle at the installation of its new oflicers. Officers are elected in the spring for the following year. Elected to serve as oilicers for this year were Joan Bena- vole, presidentg Paddy Engle, vice presidentg Janice Koressel, secretary, Nancy Branum, treasurer. Miss Helen McAninch is sponsor of this organization. This Page Sponsored by IIVILLIAMS UPHOLSTEKY 919 S. This was heard often the night of the Winter Carnival as the members of the seventh grade Y-Teen sponsored a coat-check room. This club also sponsored Winter Wonderland, a dance held in the girl's gym at Christmas. Members of the club collected money and sent a gift basket to a needy family for Christmas. The club had some guest speakers for their meetings, and the members of the club also put on their own pro- grams. Since the majority of the students are in their hrst year of instrumental music, there is a need for hard work. Due to the expansion of music in the metropolitan schools during the past three or four years, another band had to be started this year at B.H.S. More and more students are playing musical instruments, there- fore a new system had to be developed which would enable more students to participate. The C Band is primarily a training organization for membership in the B Band which in turn feeds the A Band. This band represents mostly the seventh and eighth grades, Since classes met only twice a week, the band was handicapped in the amount of time allotted for rehearsals. Because the band is a training organization, it does not have very many extra activities. In the spring, however, the C Band provides music for a pops concert. Students who served as ofiicers for the C Band were elected at the beginning of the school year. They were jack Lemon, presidentg Phillip R. This is one of the questions most frequently asked by members of the In- ternational Relations Club. Several of the programs for this year have consisted of speakers from foreign coun- tries attending Indiana University. One of these speakers was Mr. Battle who gave an in- teresting talk about England. These speeches were al- ways very informative as were the other programs which sometimes consisted of discussions and debates by club members. In order ro become a member of the Inter- national Relations Club, students must show an active interest in foreign lands and people. The purpose of this club is to promote a better under- standing of international problems by lectures and dis- cussions. Thespian Troupe 142 was organized in 1929 by Mrs. Laura Childs with the purpose of advancing interest and participa- tion in dramatic arts. Election to Thespian is the highest honor available to any high school dramatist. Membership is gained in Thespian by satisfactorily earning thirty-five points with a minimum of ten points required in acting and ten points required in tech- nical work. Thespian activities this year included two one act plays, one that was given in February for convocation and the other was presented on Drama Night in May. The club also voted to study parliamentary procedure and to form a team to teach other organizations correct parliamentary practice. A thor- ough course covering all aspects of the theater was offered to acquaint Thespians with the field of entertainment. The officers this year were Loralyn Wlritehead, presidentg Connie Bennett, vice presidentg jim White, secretary-treas- urer. Mr. William Voorhies sponsors the club. Every spring a formal banquet is held at which time loving cups are presented to the two outstanding Thespians. These people are chosen not only for acting ability but for coopera- tion, character, and service to the organization. To be elected to this honorary organ- ization is one of the highest honors in Bloomington High School and a goal toward which everyone should work. Each spring out- standing students from the upper fourth of the senior class and a few high ranking members of the junior class are elected to the society by vote of the faculty. Following the election, the new members are initiated in a very impressive service at a senior high convocation. Members elected the previous year participate by defining the principles of the National Honor Society and by presenting pins to the initiates. The annual social event of the Honor Society is the formal banquet preceding the junior-Senior Prom. The Bloomington High School chapter was established in 1927, and, thus far, has approximately eight hundred members. The purposes of this club are to develop student interest in athletics, to promote good feeling among athletes of all sports, and to create acceptable mental, physical, and moral attitudes toward opponents, fellow students, and our school. A main project of the B-Men was developing an ath- letic handbook to be given to all boys who go out for any sport. The boys also sponsored a booth at the Winter Carnival. Following the end of the season of each sport, a Parent-Son banquet is heldg and the B-Men's trophy is awarded to the boy who is voted most valuable by his team mates. Entertainment for the evening was supplied by various class members. Social dancing was a part of the enjoyment of the evening. Later, refreshments were served to the seniors. The refresh- ments consisted of sandwiches, potato chips, and ginger ale. The Hrst class pep session was held before the Tell City-Bloomington football game, The senior girls posed as the Bloomington Panthers while the senior boys posed as the Tell City team. It consisted of a beauty contest between the Bloomington Panthers, who were represented by Don Anderson, and the jas- per team, which was represented by Jim Brinegar. The contest was won by the Bloomington Panthers. Carol Rader, queen. and Ronnie Mood, king, lead the Grand March. On May 14, the Junior Prom was held in the boys' gymnasium in honor of the Class of 1954. The theme of our prom was Moonlight Fantasy, and we were entertained by the music of Dave Baker and his band. We entered into a moonlight world by crossing small wooden bridges, and We danced surrounded by small white birch trees. A large silver moon hung above us as we danced to the soft music of the band. Ronnie Mood and Carol Rader were crowned king and queen by last year's retiring rulers, Judy Mood and Charles Franklin. Entertainment was supplied for the evening by solos from Judy Branam and James Hopkins. Musical selections were played by members of the Brass Choir.
