Page Lift This Page Spfmsored by JOLLY'S DRIVE - INN Health and fafery Health and Safety is a required subject for every student in Bloomington High School. It is a study of the general make-up of the human structure. The nervous, respiratory, and cir- culatory systems are illustrated through movies, projects, and a mannequin with removable parts. Personality and personal appearance, as well as, bone structure, sanitation, digestion, and first aid are discussed in this course. Here lies :1 challenge to both boys and girls as individuals. to work for a healthier nation. Ifzfide DVl.Vf71g Okay. you can take the wheel now. Yes, your dream of driving a car has come true . . . Boys and girls who have taken health and safety are entitled to a semester of inside driving. Car units, which were made by the shop classes, include a clutch, brake, accelerator, gear shift, and steering wheel. As the beginners interpret the signals given by the instructor, Mr. Groh checks each student's driving skill on a control board indicator. This course also reviews and introduces safety rules and regulations. A Drwmg Fufui e The Invde Ntm lf Thzs Page Sponsored by RUSSELL STOCIGK LLL Hour Phillips 66 Distributor P1 Q 1 rx ' ' H , l . Now we are seniors, and those four years are history. The first three years were almost uneventful for us as a class, but in the spring of 1948 we organized and elected our class officers. These officers in turn selected our sponsors, and we were ready to begin our many activities. Last spring we were Junior Joes for a day, while the seniors paraded as tramps. Toward the last of the year the Gothic staff was orga- nized and began work with the aid of Mr. Brice. The climax of our junior year came with the annual prom, given in honor of the class of '-18. Last fall, when we entered school, as seniors, our days became filled with many different activities. These included our parties. plays, participation in sports, and other extra-curricu- lar activities which kept us on the run. Some of our outstanding students were given individual honors on several different occasions. We spon- sored the pep session before the U.H.S. - B.H.S. basketball game. As the year drew to a close we participated in Tramp Day, which brought forth the usual hobos in hilarious attire. The seniors honored their parents on Senior- Parent Night and reviewed for them the school life of a senior. The weeks continued to pass and we donned caps and gowns to reign in pomp and glory during senior week. On Honor Day our out- standing students were honored, and on Class Day we took our last bow to the student body. Following on swift feet came Baccalaureate, then Commencement - and the pages of our history were filled. Tramp. To be in the band means being caught in a whirlwind of activities and tossed about until your graduation day - but it's fun. From the first day of school when the foot- ball season begins, until the last summer concert. the band is called upon to render its spirited rhythms and romatic airs for every event from ushering Santa Claus to his throne to setting the tempo for the May Pole festivities. Most students who become band members begin their instrumental music studies in the elementary school and are prepared to do band work by the time they are freshmen in high school. The band is generally regarded as a per- forming group and is called upon to perform publicly about seventy times a year, therefore. the musical activities of the band are necessarily of a program planning nature. Band members who are serious music students generally en- roll in orchestra for a year or tvvo vvhere the pace is slowed dovvn and a definite music history and appreciation program is planned. . Hard work, deter- mination, and strenuous practice paid dividends as the team ended the season with a great record of eight victories. one tie. and one loss. The Huffmen opened their season September 10 with a 25-T victory over a tough and under- rated Sullivan squad and followed that with a 28-6 triumph over the New Albany Bulldogs. On September 25 the Panthers received a chance to prove themselves a top-notch ballclub when they met the Irish of Cathedral, Indianapolis. The Purples took the advantage with a 19-0 win. Next the boys rolled over the Washington llatchets 26-0, and then trounced the Columbus Bulldogs, 19-0. It was then that people knew thai these Panthers were more than just a run of the mill team. The Lawrenceburg Tigers werc the next to feel the brunt of the Panther power. as the squad journeyed to the Ohio River city and gave a terrific display both offensively and defensively in a -15-0 rout. Injuries in practice to key players played an important part in a thrilling 13-13 deadlock with the highly-rated Wiley Red Streaks. Twice the Purples were forced to come from behind to gain a tie. At Vincennes the Alices also gave the boys quite a scare as they scored two quick touchdowns. but the Purples rallied both times and came back to take a 13-12 verdict. The Panthers ended the home season on Nov- ember 5 with an exciting T-0 decision over the previously undefeated Garfield Purple Eagles. Because of consistant rains the field was soggy and muddy. and neither team was able to show much of its true power. For the final game, November 11. the Panthers traveled to Evans- ville, with good chance to spoil the perfect record of the Reitz squad, which was finally to become the mythical state champion. At the start the Purples fumbled, Reitz recovered and scored. The Panthers stumbled at the threshold of fame and fell in a 39-0 loss. It was the second time in two years that Reitz had spoiled a perfect season for' liloomingtorl. ln three of the last four games. the team faced undefeated squads. Garfield and Wiley were ranked high all season and Reitz was voted the best prep football team in the state. The Purples came through in fine style despite facing such a tough schedule as this. Also adding to the list of honors, several of the boys earned berths or mention on many of the various All-State and All-Conference teams. The team's success lay in the hard work, effort and ability of the players, the fine coaching of the staff. and above all - teamwork. State Cl9m1zp.r Again Records fell right and left in the state meet as our Panthers racked up their fifth consecutive state title. Seven Purples took individual cham- pionships and the team scored an all-time re- cord of 65 points. The regular schedule closely resembled that of last year and with the return of many letter winners, the team came through with a record of thirteen wins and one loss. The first two home meets saw the Panther varsity defeat Danville, Illinois 38-5, while the Cubs downed Anderson 27-15. The next meets found the grapplers in- vading Chicago. On the first day they 'trounced Tilden Tech, city champs, 32-16 and Washington of East Chicago, -15-3. The next day Roosevelt. East Chicago, suffered similiar treatment with ri 43-5 loss. The following weekend saw the Panthers traveling into Illinois for meets with Danville and Champaign. Danville fell 28-7, but Champaign proved to be a more stuhfiorn foe he- fore giving up their first loss in four years 23-16. At home for the next two meets, Southport was easily vanquished 39-3. Champaign came to Bloomington seeking revenge and carried off a hotly contested 28-12 win, the only defeat of the year for the grapplers. In their final dual meet, our matmen traveled to Muncie for a lop- sided 35-10 win. Once again the State Meet was held in Bloom- ington. this time on February 18 - 19. At the start it was apparent the Purples were well on the way to the crown. It was B.H.S. all the way. Although last year's squad was the first in eighteen years, they had a successful season f winning six games and losing two. With the return of last year's squad plus a host of prom- ising newcomers, Coach Groh's nine tore into 71 schedule that included such noteworthy ball teams as: Bedford. The main purposes of the club are to stimulate a greater interest in school athletics, to promote a better understanding of athletic activities, and to maintain a greater respect for the athletic One of the particular advantages of the club is that it gives the lettermen an opportunity to meet together in a mood of good fellowship. Une of the functions of the B-Men is the awarding, of a trophy to the outstanding player in each sport at the annual banquet. This year seniors winning two major letters in sports received a jacket in addition to their B's. Among the club's activities was a closed dance for members and their dates in the girls gym on November 13. Then. of course, there were those three gruelling initiations for new members: one in the fall, winter, and spring. One of the club's forgotten, but important activities, is the ushering at pep sessions, All in all. the club has been one of the great morale builders of the school down through the years. The officers for this year xx ere President George Branam Vice president Andy Raw and the Secretary Treasurer George DeBoy The sponsor was Mr Burns with the able assistance of the other coaches s.
